If there is one single lesson Ive learned its this: you need light, and lots of it. More light than you probably think you need.
Do not take pictures indoors without an extra source of light, whether thats a window, a close lamp, or a ring light! Just dont do it!
With that said, I thought Id experiment with different types of lighting to see what effect it has on my pictures.
Change Your Nail Color
If you’re rocking blue nails but realize that red would look better, put down the nail polish remover! Change your nail color with a few taps in Facetune2:
- Open Facetune2 and go to Makeup.
- Tap on Tones and swipe a new color onto your nails. You can use the slider for more or less intensity.
P.S. This feature works better if you have solid-colored nails.
How I Got My Nail Pics From A 3 To A Strong 8
My favourite blog posts are the ones where I actually get to make, build, or do stuff. So I knew that this was going to be a fun one. I decided to do a blog post about this not only because its fun, but because I believe that taking great pics of your work is what sets the top-level nail studios apart on social media.
It takes a little bit of time, but I truly believe that taking great pictures is one of the best things you can do for your marketing, your brand, and ultimately for growing your nail business.

Add Shine Or Sparkles
Honestly, everybody could use a little sparkle in their selfies. Instead of dealing with the messy hell that is nail glitter, you can drop in a subtle sparkle with Facetune2:
- Open Facetune2 and go to Makeup> Glitter.
- Choose your desired shade of glitter and swipe it over your nails a few times. You can use the slider for a more intense sheen.
Change Nail Polish Color In Photoshop
Its is pretty much common that you have put a not so good looking nail polish on an important day. It might be your wedding day, your birthday, your anniversary, or it could be anything. Unfortunately its not possible to turn back time and change the color of your nail polish, but its possible to change nail polish color in Photoshop so that you dont get embarrassed when you show the pictures to your family and friends.
This is a pretty much short tutorial and should not take more than 10 minutes. The technique that I am going to use is also pretty much easy to use. The best thing is that this technique does not involve any adjustment layer. It just uses a blend mode. So you dont have to remember anything.
So lets begin the tutorial, but before that, let me show you the final picture.

Shoot At Different Times Of Day
Sunrise and sunset are known as the “golden hour” when everything is awash in a warm, yellow light. If you’re going for a sunny aesthetic, shoot during the golden hour. For darker looks, wait for a cloudy or stormy day. I recommend matching your manicure with the weather forecast for a cohesive vibe.

- Find your best nail pic and load it up to your AirBrush app.
- Find the Hair Dye Tool in your Tools Tab.
- The Hair Dye Toolwill automatically detect your hair and apply Dyeto it.
- Well need to remove the Dyefrom your hair first.
- Tap the Fine-Tune Feature on the bottom left hand side.
- You will then zoom in to your nails to begin the manicure.
- Its easer to do one nail at a time.
- Adjust your brush size to fit you needs.
- Begin to swipe across the surface of your nail.
- If the Dye color you previously selected doesnt show very much continue to apply and youll be able to switch between colors once you save your changes.
- Once youve finished applying your polish/dye you can start switching between colors to find your perfect shade. Or shades! Change it up as much as youd like.
- Just like in real life, you might need to apply a second coat to this manicure.
- Simply tap your Fine-Tune feature like you did before and give each nail a few more brushes.

And Why Not I Bought A Mini Ring Light Off Amazon:
Since everyone else is doing it, I caved and bought an $18 ring light off Amazon. The result is actually kind of cool. I like how the light makes the nails look shinier with a nice reflection. Just be sure to move the nails around until they catch the light.
Verdict? I definitely recommend trying a ring light, but dont use it as your only source of light – its not bright enough. Use it with another light source like a window or lamp.

Drop In A Contrasting Background
Don’t let your background distract from your badass nails. Use Facetune2 to blur or change your background. To blur your background:
- Open Facetune2 and go to Defocus.
- Tap on Auto for the app to defocus the background for you. If it isnât blurry enough, drag the slider to the right for a more extreme effect.
To change your background:
- Open Facetune2 and go to Backdrop.
- Scroll through Facetune2’s preloaded backdrops or upload your own photo. I recommend sticking with more subtle backdrops so you arenât taking attention away from your nails.

I asked nail educator and all-around fantastic person Amy Masters for her opinion on nail pics. Heres what she has to share.
“Capturing pictures is so important for so many reasons.
1. For yourself it’s always fun too look back and see your growth in your portfolio. 2. To build a clientele with advertising 3. To get published and used with social media.
To capture a great nail pic, first nourish the cuticles to look moisturized. Pose the clients’ hands to be flattering for their nail length and shape as some clients’ fingers twist and turn. I prefer the fingers to be close together and up-close. This is the best way to showcase the nails!
Angling your camera is important as it can make the nails look stubby if its angled too high and can make them look oddly long if angled to low. Move the camera around to best capture the true look of the nails.
Lighting is also an important step. Halogen lamps mimic sunshine allowing the sparkle and halo of the glitters to shine and sparkle. After youve taken the picture, crop and add a frame and/or watermark to finish.
Post away and enjoy the feedback. I do not enhance or alter my pics in any way as I dont want to mislead anyone about my work.”

Editing images these days, including nail images is a controversial topic. Your nail images should show the quality and truth of your work. It is therefore important to not over edit, but equally as important to enhance and make the best of the image to make it stand out.
It may be that you take a pic against a perfect crisp, white background and you spot some black fluff distracting from the nails in the image, or your customer has a cat scratch that they had prior to attending their appointment and you dont want it to look like the cut was obtained from their nail appointment. Remember the camera has better sight than us at times, and these slight imperfections cant be seen in person but can be through the camera and the need to edit is sometimes necessary. Keep in mind this is only going to work if there is a tiny touch-up needed. If the full perimeter of the nail is wavy or the glitter is all over the skin, then this calls for more practice in application versus an editing app.

The first stage of editing is cropping. I only recommend using your phone zoom x 2 and cropping for a crisper final image. Cropping your image will make sure the nails are the focus and any background clutter is removed.
