Laser Treatment For Nail Fungus

What Should You Expect

Laser Treatment of Toe Nail Fungus

Laser treatment for toenail fungus is a simple, pain-free procedure. During the session, your foot doctor will inspect your foot. A debridement, where your toenails are clipped and dead skin clean, may occur prior to the procedure.

The laser therapist usually an experienced podiatrist will clean the foot with a sterile solution. The laser will be maneuvered over the affected nails, using pulses to minimize heat on the skin. In total, a session lasts 30 minutes or less, and 1-3 sessions are needed for lasting results.

Look for these signs of improvement:

Reduce yellow, white or brown toenail discoloration

No more flaky debris under or on the nail.

No more detachment of the nail from the nail bed.

Normal shape and texture of new nail growth .

What Happens During A Laser Nail Fungus Treatment At Nys Hudson Dermatology

Every patients treatment journey begins with a consultation to determine which procedures will best address their needs and conditions. During your consultation, a dermatologist will assess the nails that are causing concern. If onychomycosis is present, laser nail fungus treatments may be recommended. Because fingernail and toenail fungus has a tendency to spread and increase in severity with time, its best to seek treatment as soon as possibleeven if the symptoms seem mild.

Prior to the actual treatment, your dermatologist will ask that you remove any nail polish from the areas that will be treated. They may also file down the nails and remove dead skin adjacent to the treatment area. During your appointment, a laser will be moved over the affected nail. The experience is painless, although some patients report experiencing a slight warming or tingling session in the treatment area. As the laser is drawn over the nail, it heats the fungal colonies growing beneath, killing them. Unlike topical nail fungus treatments, the laser can easily penetrate the nail, targeting the bacteria where it grows.

What Is The Most Effective Treatment For Toenail Fungus

These drugs are often the first choice because they clear the infection more quickly than do topical drugs. Options include terbinafine and itraconazole . These drugs help a new nail grow free of infection, slowly replacing the infected part. You typically take this type of drug for six to 12 weeks.

Signs Of Success Post

Even while some patients recover from the infection after just one treatment, more visits may be necessary. Even effective therapies are not expected to completely cure an infected nail right away. It could take up to a year for the nail to grow out before you can assess the treatments efficacy.

Some signs of improvement may include:

How Does Laser Therapy Work

In simplified terms, the laser therapy device shines a laser light into the toenail, penetrating down on, in, and through the nail to reach the fungus. It vaporizes the fungus. It also leaves the skin and tissue around the fungus alone.

Essentially, the laser device is set at a certain wavelength that only the fungus will absorb. When it penetrates the fungus, it destroys it.

If we want to get a little more technical, there are a few ways it can destroy fungus depending on the laser. Most lasers use photothermolysis that causes photomechanical or photothermal damage. We like the non-thermal laser therapy as it is pain-free since it doesnt use heat. It is still absorbed by the fungus only and damages the structure of the fungus.

But what you need to know is that laser therapy has been proven effective in clinical trials and because of this, the FDA began clearing laser devices.

As with all the treatments, you wont see the results right away. You have to wait until your nice fungus-free nail grows in. This will take months. But youll start to see the difference as the new nail comes in.

Does Insurance Cover Laser Toenail Fungus Removal

Even though toenail laser fungus treatment is FDA approved and shown effective, it is unfortunately not covered by insurance.

  • This means Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and other insurances do not cover laser toenail fungus.
  • In our opinion, the cost is comparable to what the average co-pay would be, and research has shown that lasers are very cost-effective even though they are not covered.

Toenail Fungus Onychomycosis Is A Very Common Condition Affecting One In Ten Canadians

Laser for Toenail Fungus: Does it really work? By Seattle Podiatrist Larry Huppin

The appearance of toenail fungus is not only unsightly but can lead to embarrassment and a lack of self confidence. It is estimated that upwards of 10% of the North American population suffer from toenail fungus, with the number dramatically increasing as people age.

Toenail fungus does not generally pose any serious risks in people who are in good health, however, it rarely goes away on its own, and must be medically treated.

What Is Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a medical condition called onychomycosis and is a very common infection found in the toenail. It is typically identified by a white, brown, or yellow discoloration of the toenail. There is generally no pain associated with toenail fungus, however, debris is often found under the toenail and may cause the nail to thicken, crumble, and spread to several other toenails.

Toenail fungus is most often caused by dermatophytes, fungal organisms which surface as infections of the hair, skin, and nails. Because dermatophytes are spread through direct contact, toenail fungus is deemed contagious.

Further, toenail fungus can also be caused by untreated athletes foot, exposure to yeast and molds, and is very common in people with poor circulation in the feet and compromised immune systems.

How To Treat Toenail Fungus

There are several ways to treat toenail fungus, depending on the severity of the infection. For less severe conditions, a topical or oral medication can do the trick. As part of this treatment, its good practice to remove parts of the diseased nail and any debris. If medication doesnt work, then permanent removal of the nail may be recommended.

Precautions That Influence How Laser Therapy Works

Your knowledge of how laser therapy for toenail fungus works is incomplete without knowing the precautions. One advantage of these precautions is they can fight the causes of the infection before your treatment.

  • Carefully exfoliate your toes and feet to remove dead skin cells. In the process, you may remove fungus present in dead skin tissues.
  • Carry an extra pair of cotton socks to wear after your treatment session. You risk reinfection if you wear the same socks you wore to the initial treatment.
  • Trim your toenails before your treatment sessions. Some infected toenail parts may be removed in the process.
  • Clean your nail polish before your procedure. Failure to completely clean your nail polish can hinder the results of the procedure. Nail polish restricts the laser from penetrating the nail bed.

Also, how you care for your nail afterwards determines the results you get. Patients who go back to habits that caused the fungal infection are likely to have it resurface. Below are things to do after your laser therapy sessions.

  • Dry your feet after taking a bath or a swim.

Laser therapy treatments for toenail fungus allow patients to be comfortable removing their shoes in public. Toenail fungus can give off an offensive smell which is often embarrassing.

With proper care of your shoes and toes after your treatment session, you can eliminate the foul smell. Also, be sure to follow additional instructions you may receive from your medical aesthetician after your procedure.

Laser Removal For Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal nail infections if mild can be treated with topical paint on nail lacquers. Success rates are variable and the treatment takes many months. Tablet treatments can take up to six month, but is more successful, and also suitable for more severe infection. Success rates are between 40-80% in clinical trials.

Some types of fungus such as moulds, however, do not respond to tablet treatment. The tablets commonly cause side-effects and for some people require blood test monitoring in case of drug-induced liver inflammation.

A growing number of clinical trials have confirmed that laser treatment is as equally effective at treating nail fungus infection with success rates of 53-82%. Moulds can also respond to laser treatment. Dermatologist assessment and mycology may be required for laser or drug resistant cases to establish the specific fungus strain or consider diagnoses other than fungal infection.

Laser treatment of fungal nail infection is quick, painless and just as successful as topical or tablet treatment without any side-effects. It even works for some types of fungus that are resistant to tablet treatment. One treatment every week for four weeks is required. Multiple nails can be treated at each laser session.

Initial assessment is by our laser practitioner. Onward private referral to a dermatologist or back to your GP may be required if the diagnosis is not nail fungal infection.
