Symptoms usually appear later in the growing season on outdoor plants. Powdery mildew starts on young leaves as raised blister-like areas that cause leaves to curl, exposing the lower leaf surface.

Infected leaves become covered with a white to gray powdery growth, usually on the upper surface unopened flower buds may be white with mildew and may never open. Leaves of severely infected plants turn brown and drop.

The disease prefers young, succulent growth mature leaves are usually not affected. Fungal spores overwinter inside leaf buds and other plant debris.

Wind, water, and insects transmit the spores to other nearby plants. Zucchini, beans, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, roses, and zinnia are especially susceptible.

How To Treat Powdery Mildew

If your plants do develop powdery mildew despite your best efforts, dont worry. There are many environmentally friendly options for eliminating the disease, including:

Baking Soda. Baking soda itself isnt normally effective as a powdery mildew treatment, but when its combined with liquid soap and water, it can be a powerful weapon. Its normally most beneficial if used as a preventative measure rather than a treatment. Combine one tablespoon baking soda and one-half teaspoon of liquid, non-detergent soap with one gallon of water, and spray the mixture liberally on the plants.

Mouthwash. The mouthwash you may use on a daily basis for killing the germs in your mouth can also be effective at killing powdery mildew spores. Since its function is to kill germs, the powdery mildew spores cant withstand it. Using three parts water to one part mouthwash has been found to be a good ratio, but new growth can be damaged since mouthwash is potent, so use with caution.

Milk. Milk is making its way onto the scene as a viable means to control powdery mildew. Not all the science is known, but the compounds in milk may be able to act as an antiseptic and fungicide as well as potentially increase the plants overall immunity. It tends to be effective as a method of preventing powdery mildew on zucchini and other types of squash, as well as cucumbers. An effective mixture ratio is about one part milk to two or three parts water.

When To See A Doctor

In most cases, toenail fungus is considered a cosmetic problem. Still, it may cause serious complications for some people.

If you have diabetes, toenail fungus may lead to foot ulcers or other foot problems. According to a 2012 study, chronic toenail fungus is a significant risk factor for bacterial cellulitis of the leg.

You shouldnt use home remedies for toenail fungus if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system. Contact your doctor for the appropriate course of action.

How Does Powdery Mildew Hurt Your Plants

Compared to many viruses powdery mildew might not seem like the most detrimental virus. Powdery mildew doesnt have any negative effects on your plants except for one very significant way.

Powdery mildew blocks leaves from completing photosynthesis, and the less energy your plant has, the less likely it is to produce viable fruit. Not only that, but since powdery mildew spreads extremely fast, it can quickly overtake the entire plant and prevent it from getting enough photosynthesis to simply survive.

To make matters worse, since it spreads via airborne particles it quickly infests every single plant in your garden. So, while those small white spots on a single pumpkin plant might not seem like much now, if you leave them alone for too long then they can quickly take over your garden and ruin the entire harvest.

Cutting the grass regularly is by far the most important part of maintaining a healthy lawn.

With regular cutting, the grass cant grow upwards so is forced to grow sideways, creating new roots, shoots and leaves.

Grass leaves are like solar panels that trap sunlight which it uses to create and store food. The more grass in the lawn, the healthier and more resistant to diseases it will be.

    What Are Fungus Gnats

Although they look like tiny mosquitoes, fungus gnats are small flies of the Orfelia and Bradysia species. They are fairly tiny insects. They can be identified by their narrow legs, light gray or clear wings, and segmented antennae larger than their heads. The adults grow to be about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. If you notice these gnats flitting about and your plants seem to wilt for no reason, larval root damage could be the cause.

Fungus gnats do not bite people or pets. The adult gnats don’t do much damage to plants instead, the larvae will munch on your plant’s tiny feeder roots, limiting the plant’s ability to take up nutrients and stunting its growth. Fungus gnats are primarily a problem in nurseries, where many susceptible young seedlings are grown in damp conditions. While you may not be growing your plants in a nursery or greenhouse setting with a large enough population, they can also pose a threat to common houseplants.

Is Baking Soda Good For Plants

â How to: Make Cheap Homemade Fungicide (Complete Step by Step Guide)

Baking soda on plants causes no apparent harm and may help prevent the bloom of fungal spores in some cases. It is most effective on fruits and vegetables off the vine or stem, but regular applications during the spring can minimize diseases such as powdery mildew and other foliar diseases.

A solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda to 1 gallon a of water reduces instances of leaf burn. Add 1 teaspoon dormant oil and ½ teaspoon of dish soap or horticultural soap as a surfactant to help the mixture stick. Keep in mind the solution is water soluble, so apply on a dry cloudy day for best results.

While some trials and scientific research mitigate the effectiveness of baking soda against fungal diseases, it wont hurt the plant and does have short term benefits, so go for it!

BEFORE USING ANY HOMEMADE MIX: It should be noted that anytime you use a home mix, you should always test it out on a small portion of the plant first to make sure that it will not harm the plant. Also, avoid using any bleach-based soaps or detergents on plants since this can be harmful to them. In addition, it is important that a home mixture never be applied to any plant on a hot or brightly sunny day, as this will quickly lead to burning of the plant and its ultimate demise.

    Preventing Fungus Gnats In Houseplants

Fungus gnats commonly get into a house either because the plants have been outdoors, where adult gnats can lay their eggs into the soil, or the plants came from their source with contaminated soil. The only way to prevent this migration is to avoid bringing the plants inside. Of course, houseplants, by definition, live indoors, so this is not a permanent solution.

The best answer is to quarantine new plants or those that have been outdoors for extended periods. Keep the plants in their own room for at least 17 days , and inspect the plant carefully for the presence of adult gnats. Once the plant has been cleared with no insect activity, you can move it in with your other plants.

As an ongoing prevention method, be careful not to overwater your houseplants since soggy soil and a full runoff saucer are just what the gnats are looking for. Let the soil dry between waterings, but only as much as the plant will tolerate this is no reason to threaten your plant’s vitality.

    Why Your Lawn Is Rusty

Many types of plants are susceptible to rust fungus, from ornamental plants to evergreens. But on your lawn the fungus becomes very obvious due to the large amount of space the plant covers. Grass that is low in nitrogen or has not been watered properly is usually at the highest risk for lawn rust. The weather can also have an effect. Cool nights and heavy rainfall are favorable for rust development. It is usually prevalent in late summer or early fall when lawn growth slows down.
