According to Lamb, damaged nails can signify different things in different people. “Nails often manifest vitamin deficiencies or can be a normal sign of aging,” she said. “Eczema or psoriasis can be found in the nails, too. Often when a patient has been diagnosed with psoriasis, the first place I look is their nails.”
However, our nail thickness, hardness and growth is often determined by our genes. Lamb compared this to the way our hair grows since they’re made up of a similar type of protein. “For the same reason some people have curly hair, some people grow long short , it’s all dependent on genes,” she quipped. “But there can also be pathology problems with your nails: paronychia, fungus, yeast eczema.”

I never had problems with my nails before. They were strong and looked good. Blame it on my household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing dishes etc, my nails are always wet and it started to break a lot. So, I had stopped growing my nails I started missing my nails and decided to try nail strengtheners to see if they actually work.
The Sally Hansen Advanced Hard As Nails Strengthener is a colorless liquid which comes packaged in a transparent bottle. I like the packaging as its easy to carry around. Initially, I applied a single coat of the strengthener on my nails. It made my nails look shiny. But, I did not find any significant difference in the appearance of my nails. Even then, my nails were breaking.
It is instructed to apply 2-3 coats of this nail strengthener to see a significant difference. So, I applied around 3 coats of the nail strengthener on my nails and after around 10 minutes, I applied one more coat. It did strengthen my nails. It was not breaking like before. But, the corners of my nails were slightly chipping off.
I have been using this strengthener for two weeks and my nails have not broken yet! Two of my nails have got slightly chipped from the corners. I guess you have to reapply the hardener once in few days to prevent this issue or you can remove it altogether and reapply. You can also apply it as a base coat for your nail polish. However, too much layering causes the nail polish to peel off from the nails.
