Laser Treatment Compared To Other Options
Laser treatments are typically more effective than other ways of treating onychomycosis. This infection can be treated with topical antifungal medications or oral antifungals, and there are over-the-counter, as well as prescription options. Oral antifungals cause systemic side effects and are not totally effective for curing onychomycosis. Topical treatments tend to be safe, but are not very effective.
Research shows there’s an approximately 45% improvement of onychomycosis with topical medicine and approximately 40% to 66% improvement with oral medication.
However, there does seem to be a range in the efficacy with all of these treatments. Using them consistently while avoiding side effects can be tedious. And combining treatments may be more effective than using a single treatment approach.
Laser Treatment Of Nail Fungus
Nail fungus often begins as a yellow or white spot under the tip of your toenail or fingernail. The problem can quickly become worse as the fungus spreads. In most cases, it causes the nail to thicken and eventually fall apart at the edges. A fungal nail is not only unattractive but it can be painful and difficult to treat effectively. However, with laser nail fungus treatment, you may be able to rid yourself of this nail disease once and for all.
Does The Cutera Laser Treatment For Toenail Fungus Hurt
The Cutera laser provides a comfortable safe feedback. Patient feedback is also important during the procedure. A warming sensation will be felt in the nail bed as the laser is passed over the nail. If the nail becomes painful, the patient can take a break. Immediately following the procedure, the nail may feel warm for a few minutes and patients can resume normal activity.

Addendum To: Groupon Discount For Laser Nail Fungus Treatment
Today, I received notice from the New York State Podiatric Medical Association that discounting lasers for nail fungus on Groupon and other similar sites is actually illegal fee splitting in the eyes of New York State.
It is in violation of both 6509 of the New York State Education Law and Section 29.1 Title 8 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York.
Apparently, the way Groupon is structured, they get a percentage of the fee for service paid to the physician. This is called fee splitting and is illegal.
It is perfectly legal to pay for advertising, but when the physician splits the individual fees based on how much they receive it becomes illegal.
To my colleagues out there using Groupon, be careful. In addition to providing services that are destined to not work as Ive outlined in my previous post , you may be subject to discipline from the Office of Professional Misconduct.
I have seen multiple doctors offering laser for nail fungus on Groupon for significant discounts
I would advise you to stay clear of these doctors
We all have heard, when things sound to good to be true, they usually are. This is no exception. Ive closely read many of these ads and there are subtle things that make me think that these offers will not work.
The truth is it almost always takes at least 3 treatment to cure nail fungus. It requires using the proper laser machine, the Cutera is the best FDA approved machine.

Which Laser Therapy Device Is Best
We swear by our non-thermal cold laser device in treating toenail fungus in our practice. Its called Lunula Laser and its made by Erchonia. Its the first of its kind and the only non-thermal cold laser device to get FDA market clearance to treat onychomycosis.
This is likely thanks to its three successful clinical trials that ensure safety and effectiveness.
Whats so special about this laser? Besides the fact that its safe and effective, we love that it uses a low-level laser wavelength. Thanks to this type of cold laser, theres no discomfort or searing heat pain during treatment like with some of the other laser devices. The treatment also encompasses your entire foot. It requires no operator, so man-made errors are eliminated unlike with other lasers on the market.
The laser doesnt emit smoke fumes and 89% of patients have a positive response to the treatment.
Also, we love that this device is made in the United States.

If I Have Only One Infected Nail Can I Treat Only That One And Save Time And Cost
Unfortunately, no. The reason for this is that if one of your nails is infected, the chances are that your other nails are infected as well. To allow the treatment to be successful and prevent future self infections, it is best to treat all the nails at once. An exception to this is for the treatment of an isolated fungal infection related to acrylic nail air pockets. In these incidences, we will treat the one affected finger nail.
Preventing Reinfection From Nail Fungus
People who get onychomycosis usually have inherited an immune system that does not fight this fungus very well. Thus, reinfection is not uncommon. You can read more here about preventing reinfection of nail fungus. Many patients return once per year for a preventative laser session. The cost of this session is currently $290 for one treatment session of all 10 toes. This is available only to patients who have undergone a full three treatment session with us in the previous 48 months. If the nails become infected again and a full course of treatment is required, then standard three-session treatment charges apply.

How Does Laser Nail Treatment Work
Fungal nails can affect up 14% of the adult population.
Fungal nails can be challenging to treat! The first and most important decision is to decide whether the nail is infected with a fungus. Typically, fungal nails will look discoloured, thickened and crumbly. Other treatments include nail paints and antifungal solutions, oral medication.
Laser treatment is a relatively new treatment that heats the nail bed enough to kill the fungal nail.
The laser beam will generate heat beneath the fungal nails and in the nail bed, which results in destruction of fungal infection, allowing the nail to grow out without the discolouration.
You will feel a warm sensation during the laser treatments, and the operator will adjust accordingly.
The number of laser treatments required depends on the severity of the fungal nail. In most cases 4 treatments will occur in a 3-4 month period.

Follow Up Laser Nail Fungus Procedure
I saw a patient today 6 months after her first PinPointe laser nail fungus treatment and 3 months after her second treatment. Immediately after her procedure I started her on topical Nail Pure Solution twice daily. Her results are amazing.
You can clearly see where the nail has grown in over the last six months with clearing and a thinner nail at the proximal 1/2 of the nail and a lighter color to the distal 1/2.
The thin part of the nail is the new nail that has grown in since the laser procedure. The whiter, but still thick part, is where the nail has not grown in yet, but is improved from the Nail Pure Topical whitening the nail and helping to kill the fungus. Ill post pictures after I have downloaded them from my Nikon.
I have been performing laser toenail fungus surgery since the technology first came to market.

Is The Cost Of Laser Therapy For Toenail Fungus Worth It
For starters, there are several types of laser devices for administering laser therapy. All these devices show varying degrees of efficacy according to reports and reviews from users.
Furthermore, these devices have due approval from the proper departments in the Canadian Ministry of Health. But, that does not imply they all work with the same level of efficacy.
Laser therapy devices work by temporarily reducing the discolouration in the infected nails.
Immediately after the therapy, patients will start to notice some temporary clarity on their toenails. After a while, itll return to the colour before the procedure. This will then start to clear off gradually.
The long-lasting curing is more gradual and may take weeks or even months. Studies indicate that patients notice a 61% cure rate within 16 weeks of the therapy. The study also shows a 91% cure rate within 180 days after the procedure. So, after laser therapy, its only a matter of time before the fungus infection disappears.
To answer the question is the cost of laser therapy for toenail fungus worth it? Well say yes, it is very well worth it. It shows a higher cure rate than all the other treatment options.
It does better than the 44% cure rate of topical medication and the 40% cure rate of oral medication. And, it has a lesser risk of side effects in comparison with other available treatment options.

Things To Consider When Picking Out A Health Care Provider For Laser Nail Fungus Treatment
Perhaps the most important thing is to make sure you find someone you can trust and that you feel comfortable with. Ask your friends and family for recommendations and if you have a regular doctor that you get along with well, ask them for a suggestion as well. Be sure to ask if nail fungus really is your problem or if it could be separation of the nail plate. If there is question about which problem it is, lab work can be completed to pinpoint exactly what the problem is so that the proper treatment can be given. If the doctors office seems more like a marketing company for laser nail treatment, proceed with caution. These people often want to perform as many laser treatments as possible even if it isnt the best course of action. Lasers are expensive and doctors want to make as much money as they can as quickly as they can to justify the cost, which is why finding an honest and ethical doctor is important. If you have any questions, my office is always willing to answer them.

The symptoms for the white-island fungus are the following.
- Nails coming off quite easily.
- Discoloration, in this case the nails become green or yellow.

Common Causes Of Nail Fungus
Nail fungus is caused by fungal organisms that enter the nail. Nail fungus is more common in older adults but affects patients of any age. In older adults, the nails are more likely to become brittle and dry, which increases the risk of cracks on the nail bed. Fungal organisms can enter through the cracks on the nail, which increases the risk of developing nail function.
Patients with a weakened immune system, diabetes, athletes foot, or poor circulation are also at a higher risk of developing nail fungus.
