Can I Use A Regular Nail Gun To Install Hardwood Floors

3.9/5can use nail gun to install hardwood floorusing nail guncaninstallationcancan usenail guns to installhardwood floor

Like most of the newer floor products, you can install it floatin without glue or nails, glued down or nailed into place on plywood and other wood product subfloors. A flooring nailer is the preferred method for attaching flooring, but a brad nailer, used correctly, runs a close second.

Beside above, are staples or nails better for hardwood floors? Staples. Because each staple grips the wood with two prongs, staples provide a tighter initial grip than cleat nails. However, flooring staples are more likely to back out as wood expands and contracts, loosening the hold and increasing the risk of squeaks.

Consequently, what kind of nails should I use for hardwood flooring?

Use 1-1/2″ long cleat nails when installing thinner 1/2″ thick wood flooring. Use 1-3/4″ long cleat nails when installing 3/4″ solid wood flooring, when 3/4″ thick plywood is applied directly over a concrete slabso the cleat nail does not go through the 3/4″ thick plywood, hitting the concrete.

Can you use a nail gun on laminate flooring?

Although a nail gun is unnecessary when installing laminate flooring, a hammer or mallet is required whether working with glue-together or snap-together style floors.

Better Speed And Accuracy

Choices, choices, choices… When it comes to buying a hardwood flooring nailer, there are always choices. It boils down to the little extras and variations that can tip the scales in favor of one model over another based on personal preference.

Flooring nail guns all shoot cleats and staples into floors, but they may have slight differencesor offer distinctive features from one model to the next.

Sure, you can nail every board by hand like craftsmen used to, but why? A hardwood flooring nailer is super-fast.

How fast? Look at these Fastest Nailers 2019 Wood Floor Installation Champions. You dont get this kind of speed and accuracy without it. A wood flooring nailer makes installing hardwood floors much easier and ensures that the nails go in at the correct 45° angle every time.

Set Another Chalk Line

Depending on what width hardwood you are installing this line will be different. Our job calls for a 3 1/4″ wide prefinished Bruce Winter White product. Incidentally, this was a cabin grade product installed in 2003, purchased off the internet, with the customer full aware of what to expect with a cabin grade hardwood.

Considering solid wood floors are started with tongue facing out, I used our 3 1/4 inch board width and added 1/4″ for the tongue. This insures the chalk line is not covered and can be seen easily. By adding another 3/8″ inch for expansion our line was measured 3 7/8″ off the drywall.

Getting That First Row Laid

POWERNAIL 1

Now that we have our underlayment laid out and control line in place, the next step calls for fastening that starter row. For areas along the parallel wall lines always try to unitize the longest and straightest boards you can find, as it minimizes gapping while keeping a true straight start. It is also recommended when racking to keep an eye on the better boards of the bunch and set them aside to use in other areas we will need them.

Rolling Out The Underlayment

We also have a section on using rosin paper for those that may have heard this is the way to go. Felt paper can be messy, because it is the same stuff roofers use when drying in a roof, or before the shingles go on. We want to begin rolling out the paper parallel to wall #1. When rolling, start at one end and unroll to the other while keeping about 12 inches away from the wall. This will keep the roll from blackening your freshly painted walls.

Once you’re near the end, cut off enough for it to cover, remove the roll and push the long sheet into place or butted to the wall and trim on both ends with a utility knife. Repeat these steps across the room, while stapling the underlayment to the subfloor. No need to overdo the staples. All we want to do is keep it stationary so our control line stays put. You could finish off the room and let the other areas go until you’re ready.

What’s A Control Line

A control line is a line that is established by measuring out from wall #1. The purpose is to check for square ness with a tape measure to other areas of the layout. Essentially you want to set the line in or near the center of the layout should the installation go into other rooms. A control line is not necessary if the job only calls for one square or rectangular room.

Use a general number to measure off wall #1. I’ll use 96 inches in this case because it nears the center of the area. Measure from two areas off wall #1 and mark. Draw a chalk line with a helper and snap where the two areas are marked. Once the line is set we can check if the starting area is parallel against two walls in the starting room.

Regular Nails Vs Cleat

Husky 18 Gauge Flooring Nailer

The regular nails with different head designs and smooth body are meant for securing the pieces in position by preventing them from sliding. They do not have sufficient holding power to keep the pieces tight.

On the other hand, the staple and cleat are designed for holding the wood tightly and securely in position.

Proper Subfloor Is A Must

Insuring you have a suitable subfloor is the most important ingredient for any successful installation when laying solid 3/4″ hardwoods. Failure to heed this vital prerequisite will lead to spongy, creaking, and popping sounds. Nails or staples need a proper bite, otherwise they will loosen over time.

Q How Much Does Installing Hardwood Flooring Cost

This depends on a lot of factorsstarting with the type of wood for your floor. For a rough idea on the cost to install hardwood flooring, Home Advisor states that the average homeowner will spend $4,396 to install a wood floor. On the lower end of the spectrum, softer woods such as pine can range from $3 to $6 per square foot, while more resilient and exotic wood varieties can cost $8 to $10 per square foot. In the middle lies common wood species, such as oak.

Unless youre planning a DIY project, add into that estimate the cost of labor, which will run from $3 to $8 per square foot. If you need to have furniture moved or carpeting removed, this will cost extra, so budget that into your costs.

Q Can I Install Hardwood Flooring On Concrete

Yes. But there are certain requirements to ensure that moisture doesnt reach the hardwood. The concrete floor for solid hardwood should be at-grade or above-grade . For basements, most flooring manufacturers recommend using engineered wood. Furthermore, the concrete also has to be completely dry – even before installing a subfloor. Carpeting, paint and other materials must be removed as well, and you may need a concrete grinder to prep first.

After new concrete is laid, it can take more than a month for the moisture to evaporate from concrete, and moisture levels must be tested prior to installation. Before laying hardwood flooring over concrete, youll need a moisture barrier between the two surfaces. For solid hardwood over concrete, its recommended to use a wood subfloor, which can raise the overall floor level. Something to consider, as clearance for doorways and other items may change.

Is It A Messy Job

Powercleats® 1

You’re likely to encounter quite a bit of dust that will be raised chiefly from preparation before the installation. Let’s say you’re removing carpet to install new hardwoods. You are better off vacuuming the dirt that will be found under the carpet and padding as any sweeping will certainly leave dust scattered everywhere.

Once the job begins it’s wise to handle all the cutting of material in a garage or outdoors. Tools used to cut, such as an electric miter saw can throw off dust even if a small dust collection bag is present.

Installing Solid Hardwood Floors

âThe guy at the big box store only had flooring nails. Iâve heard staples are bestâ¦â Times have changed with the widespread use of pneumatic tools with staples leading the way initially. Which is better? The consensus points towards staples but some professionals go the other direction more below.

What Type Of Fastener Does It Use

There are two types of fasteners for wood floors, cleats, and staples.

A cleat is a nail with the head shaped like an L or sometimes a T. They come in 15.5, 16, 18, and 20 gauges. For thin floors, the lightweight 20-gauge is best. The most common lengths of staples or cleats are 1 ½ inches and 2 inches. To give you a better idea, you can see a handy cleat depth chart here.

The shaft of a cleat has barbs, so it can dig into and hold the wood. A short part at the top of the cleat is smooth. It allows for the expansion of the wood without cracking the tongue.

Most contractors opt for the holding power of 16-gauge cleats for hardwood floors. Its an excellent all-purpose fastener. Check with the flooring manufacturer for recommendations.

Pros of Cleats

  • They are the most common fastener used for ¾ inch hardwood flooring.
  • Best for harder woods on the
  • Allow for better natural expansion and contraction of the wood

Cons of Cleats

  • Can take longer to install a floor

The other fastener is a staple. Being U shaped, they have two points of contact instead of one. They tend to hold boards down tighter than cleats. It can become a problem in areas with high fluctuations in humidity as they dont allow for as much movement. The lack of expansion could crack the wood at the tongue.

Its OK to use staples when installing a medium density wood like oak, but they are not the best choice for tough wood like maple or Brazilian cherry.

Pros of Staples

  • About 20% cheaper than cleats

Finishing Off The Final Rows Against The Wall

Easy Hardwood floor installation using Manual Nailer

There comes a point when the nailer will not fit near walls and we resort to the finish nailer again. If you’ve kept some longer straight boards for this area you’ll see how much easier it is to finish off the area opposed to using random boards that are not straight. Through the larger open areas it becomes much easier to get a tight fitting floor because there’s leverage in tapping them into place with the rubber side of the mallet. Pneumatic nailers also exert a good amount of force keeping those boards together too.

For stubborn boards there are several options. One can either do it by hand with a long handled screwdriver, or invest in a tool called the power jack shown on the right. When nailing the final courses do so by blind nailing or nailing into the groove at a 45 degree angle. At one point it will be necessary to top nail the last few rows.

Product Specifications

  • Box Quantity: 5000 in one case
  • Length: 1-3/4 inches

The 18 gauge nails are something that you might require in a large quantity. And getting the small boxes will not cut it if you plan to carry out a considerably large-scale project. However, this pack that is being offered by Meite would be more than enough.

Let us first talk about the number of nails that you will be getting. This one comes in a case that contains 5 boxes. Each of the boxes will contain 1000 nails, which means you are going to get 5000 nails. That means this will be good enough for relatively large-size hardwood flooring projects.

Other than that, each of the cleats features a construction of high-quality material. Instead of the average quality steel that some of the brands use, Powernail has opted for high-quality steel. That makes them achieve a higher level of durability.

Key Features

  • Box Quantity: 5000 in total
  • Length: 2 inches

Among all of the types of nails available in the market, the 18 gauge brad nails for hardwood floors are something that most opts for. Well, if you were looking for a unit such as that, you should definitely put this one on your consideration list.

Key Features

Besides that, the nails will be 2 inches in length. For having such a length, you would be able to work with the flooring that boasts thick materials. There will be no need to worry about the nailers not being able to go through the entire thickness of the material.

What Type Of Nail Gun For Hardwood Flooring

A flooring nailer is the preferred type of nail gun for installing hardwood flooring. This is because the flooring gun is specifically designed for punching nails at the correct angle into the thin sheets of hardwood flooring commonly used in homes and offices around the world.

BOSTITCH 2-in-1 Flooring Nailer See Price & Details

When doing hardwood flooring, you have to nail at an angle -usually 45-degree downwards- into the joist or subfloor to ensure that the wooden panels are secured with no gap between them. This is called blind nailing which is different from face nailing. The design of the flooring nailer makes blind nailing an easy task.

If you do not have a flooring nailer, then a finishing nailer or a Brad nailer is probably the next best hammering power tool to use. However, you will need to use it in the right way to get the same results as a flooring nailer. This means that you will need to choose the correct type of nail and shoot it in at the right angle if you want the Brad nailer to work properly in securing hardwood flooring.

With a brad or finish nailer, you may also want to increase the depth setting to ensure that the head is not protruding out. If you are using the old fashion hammer and nail, you should use a nailset to countersink the nail head into the material.

First Row Intact Moving On

Once the first row is laid, double check all your measurements to your control line. It should be dead on had you measured out from the wall in the same locations. Depending on what width product you’re using, the nail gun may be needed for the next row or until the actual flooring nailer can fit into the area.

How To Choose Best Hardwood Floor Stapler And Staples

Porta

Types of universal pneumostaplers nails and staples.

  • Pneumatic staplers
  • Electric steamers

Hardwood Staples:-

The main difference between staple guns from each other is the type and size of the staples with which they work. Stapler is chosen under the necessary staples, and not vice versa. The choice of staples depends on the type of work performed.

Choosing A Bracket:-

The length of the bracket determines how deeply it enters the material. For example, long staples are best for joining thick wooden bars. But for bonding thin plywood, they are not used. A long bracket just punches the material through.

The cross section of the bracket is the thickness of the wire from which the bracket is made. The thicker the wire, the stronger the clamp and the stronger the connection. Using thick staples is not always justified. The width of the backrest staples is also important. For example, wide staples are commonly used to connect fabric to plywood. One wide bracket captures a larger stretch of fabric. This increases the quality of the connection and reduces the consumption of brackets.

But when assembling the framework for hives, on the contrary, it is better to use narrow brackets. One bracket performs the function of two nails driven in by a row. Some staplers work not only with staples. There are models that hammer pins and studs. If you need a universal tool, then it is more profitable to take such models.
