How To Make Dip Powder For Nails

Remove The Old Dip Powder Nails

How I Made Custom Nail Dip Powder Colors : DIY

This is the longest part of the process, mostly because I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. After seeing my wife’s nails get ruined with cleaning supplies, I assumed straight acetone would chew right through the old nails. The two internet tutorials that I watched on this process also GREATLY exaggerated how fast this process was. The order that I’m going to put down is not the order that I went with but would probably provide the fastest results.

Step 1: Mechanically remove as much of the old powder as you can.

As you can see in the first photo, soaking the nails doesn’t work as well as I was led to believe. So, go straight to mechanical methods. Turn your drill on and get to filing! Don’t worry about getting clear down to the nail in this step, just remove what you feel like makes sense. I could have removed more but decided against it because I don’t have a clue as to what I’m doing and preferred to not have a story that started out with “hey, remember that one time that you sanded my nail off?”

Step 2: Acetone Wrap

Cut 10 large aluminum foil squares. Dip your cotton balls in the acetone, place it on the nail, and wrap it in foil. Twist the ends so that it looks like you know what you’re doing. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Remove one foil cap at a time and rub the nail with the cotton ball, re-soaking as needed.

Step 3: Acetone bath and scrub

How To Choose Between Dip Powder And Acrylic Nails

Everything You Need To Know About Dip Powder Nails ...

Before using the dip system, Aaron always likes to know what her clients long-term care wishes are for their nails. Does the client wish to be as natural as possible or would they care to extend the nails with tips? she muses. Are they okay soaking off with every visit? Do they want natural colored nails or a color polished look? These questions determine whether dip or acrylic is best. For clients that are accustomed to gel polish on their natural nails, Aaron says that an upgrade to the dip system is perfect. These clients are already used to soaking off every two to three weeks and with dip powder, it would be no different, she explains. For clients that are used to acrylic nails, I only suggest dip powder to them when its time for a new set. So when soaking off for a new set I begin the consultation by first looking at the condition of the clients nails and asking: Do you want to keep your natural nails and if so at what length? Depending on their answer, Aaron will recommend dip powder, as its typically gentler than classic acrylic.

Which Begs The Question: Are Dip Powder Nail Kits A Diy Or A Dont

Full disclosure, Ive only ever done my nails with the usual lacquer and have never worn acrylics. Gel manicures have intimidated me for years due to my worry about harming my natural nails. But when I saw my sister-in-laws dip powder manicure on social media, I was inspired to try one for myself. Plus, now that I had plenty of time on my hands, I felt ready to dress them up. I bought a Peppi Gel dip powder starter kit online and figured that as long as I followed the instructions to the T, Id get it right in one try.

Wrong. So very wrong. Dip kits take more precision than it seems or at least more than Im used to.

How To Diy A Powder Dip Manicure At Home:

Step 1:Prep Your Supplies

The first mistake I made was assuming that everything I needed was already in the kit or available to me at home. What more could you need besides clippers, files, and polish remover? But as Tricia Atkinson, a nail technician in Richmond, VA, tells Apartment Therapy, you need to prepare your nails thoroughly and effectively before applying a gel nail set. For materials, youll need to start with basics: nail clipper, nail file, buffer, and of course your dip system of choice, she says. I would start with a clean and bright workspace. Make sure you wash your hands, dont forget to trim and file your natural nails to your liking, and always push those cuticles back.

Step 2: Apply the Bonding Agent, Then the Powder and Repeat

Some steps overlap with regular nail care, but theres a process to applying dip powder thats more involved than simply dipping your nails in the powder, as the name implies.

  • First, you need to apply the bonding agent that the powder will stick to.
  • After a few layers of applying the glue like you would a polish then dipping your fingertip into the powder, you set it with an activator, and then add the shiny top coat.

What Is The Activator Step

We get this question a lot! People dont understand what activator does, or why is used. Technically you could skip the activator step but you probably dont want to.

Activator contains a chemical hardens the nail powder when they come in contact. Simply put, a chemical reaction occurs. If you touch the surface of your nail right after applying activator, you can feel the warmth of the reaction.

So, whats the point of this step? Well, activator helps fully seal the powder together into one large mass. It also removes any excess powder that may be left after brushing so that when you apply your top coat, it doesnt pick up any powder.

How Does Dip Powder Work

How To ACTUALLY Do Dip Powder Nails

Whether youre getting your nails done at the salon or doing them yourself at home, Aaron says that the process takes special care and attention. Each salon varies slightly in technique, but you can expect the following steps to be true of most nail salons :

  • The nails are prepped: Before starting any manicure you must make sure the nails are prepped by cleaning and freeing the nail plate of any dirt and oils, Aaron says. This is also where you should push your cuticles back and clip any hangnails, and buff the surface of the nail plate.
  • Bonder is applied: Once youve cleaned and prepped your nails, Aaron says you may apply a bonder so that the product can adhere to the nail plate and lessen the chance of lifting.
  • Base and powder are applied: Brush on the base just as if you were polishing your nails, Aaron instructs, noting to go one nail at a time. Once youve applied base coat to a single nail, dip the nail in the dipping tray of powder and repeat on each nail, making sure to brush off any excess. Based on your desired opacity and color intensity, you may want to re-dip your nails two to three times.
  • Wait a few minutes, then apply topcoat: This step is to dry and harden the product, Aaron says. You should wait two to five minutes before beginning to shape and file nails after applying activator. After you shape and file your nails to your desired look, apply a topcoat.

Step by Step Process on How to Apply Dip Nails:

  • Lightly buff your nail beds.
  • Apply nail dehydrator . Wipe away excess moisture.
  • Apply dip base liquid to your nail.
  • Dip your finger at a 45 degree angle into the powder.
  • The Materials Youll Need Include:

    • Acetone
    • Aluminumfoil Cut into 10 small squares large enough to fit around your finger
    • Cottonballs
    • Nailfile and buffer

NOTE: If youare having this process done in a salon, your technician may use a drill tofile everything off if so, avoid them! This damages the nail, is actuallypainful and is a way for them to save time rather than do the job right. Belowis the only way that experts should remove the treatment.

  • Begin by gently filing the uppermost layer of the nail and stop once the shine has been eliminated. This breaks the seal at the top surface and ensures the coating is easier to remove
  • In a bowl, soak ten cotton balls in the acetone, making sure they are saturated
  • Put a cotton ball on a nail and wrap the upper portion of the finger in a piece of the aluminum foil. Essentially, you are soaking the nail in the acetone.
  • Repeat for each finger
  • Allow the nails to soak in the acetone for at least 10-15 minutes
  • Remove the foil and cotton, pressing down on the nail as you do so as this helps to remove many layers of dip powder coating
  • Soak more cotton balls in acetone and use them to gently rub any areas of the nails that have product remaining.
  • Do NOT pick, scratch, scrape or otherwise force the coating from the nail as it harms or damages the natural nail
  • Wash the hands gently with soap and water to remove any remaining product

Im not proud of this, but there was this time I flat-out lied to my nail tech. You see, during a middle of the night fit of insomnia, I decided to try to give myself a manicure using dip powder. It didnt end well.

I thought I had seen my nails get done enough times to know the basics of how to do it. When I told that to my 12-year-old later, she said Mom, thats like saying because someone watches a lot of free climbing videos on YouTube that they could go and free climb. Mom, they would fall off the mountain.Ouch, but yeah, point taken.

Where was that girl and her skills of logic in the middle of the night, when when I needed her to stop me before I tried to give myself a dipped manicure?! Yall. It was bad. Sooooooooo bad. So bad that I didnt even take a picture, because I couldnt imagine a scenario in which Id show it to anyone.

The picture above is of my daughters nails, because like I said, I did NOT take pictures of the horror show of my nails.

This might be where a smart person gives up and admits defeat. And I did for my own nails Ill keep getting them done by a professional. BUT, I was still going to figure it out how to do my girls nails.

    Heres what I figured out:
