Smith & Cult Might Have The Best Nail Polish Names Ever
As a pre-med student at the University of Southern California, Dineh Mohajer had gone all mad scientist in her home mixing and combining nail polishes to create the crazy cool colors she really wanted to wear. That spontaneity blossomed into a multi-million dollar business known as Hard Candy that revolutionized the beauty industry.
And Mohajer is back at it again! She’s poured her creative genius into a new nail polish line that’s forced us to clear out space in our crowded medicine cabinets.
What Is It?
Smith & Cult is a polishaholic’s ultimate weakness. The brand made its debut back in late August with 30 luxe lacquers in bold and brilliant shades, plus a top coat and base coat. The products have witty names inspired by Mohajer’s life experiences. The bottles echo that same sentiment — the intentional dent on the shiny caps are “an expression of our unrefined thoughts and feelings,” the brand’s site says.
Bitter Buddhist is an homage to the health-and-fitness crazed yogis she’s encountered living in California. Cut the Mullet has a funny backstory that involves a surfer dude who rambled about religion and education. Meanwhile, Check The Rhyme pays tribute to Mohajer’s favorite rapper Q-Tip of the ’90s group, A Tribe Called Quest.

My Smith & Cult Nail Polish Collection
I mentioned back at the beginning of the year that I had dramatically reduced my nail polish collection . Well a couple of weeks ago I downsized again reducing it to just the following and about four others. Basically my nail varnish stash consists of almost-exclusively Smith & Cult Nail Polish because I think theyre bloomin awesome. Sure, not all the formulas are completely kick-ass as youll see below but the majority are spot-on, the colour range is banging and the bottles are too pretty not to Instagram. Heres what my polish rainbow looks like
Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Bitter Buddhist: This has to be applied lovingly, but this muted mint shade is one of my favourites. Its a subtle nod to colour and one that I always get compliments on whenever I wear it.
Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Feed The Rich: I almost didnt buy this because on the website it looked like a moss green, but a google of swatches revealed a teal that was probably the most unique colour Ive ever seen. Its exactly that a complete beaut of a shade.
Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Birdie Num Num: Now I cant say that this is the best formula out there , but the colour is certainly eye-catching.
Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Kings & Thieves: A deep navy, this is unlike any other colour that Ive tried before. Plus, it makes a nice change in the winter months to wear a dark colour thats a bit off piste.
The Ultimate Fall Nail Color
First off, let me save you some trouble and embarrassment – the lid is supposed to be dented. It’s a design choice. Ok, on to more important matters. This formula is fantastic. With this handy little bottle that IS TOTALLY SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THAT AND OMG I FEEL LIKE A JERK FOR COMPLAINING TO CUSTOMER SUPPORT, you get flawless, two-coat coverage. The pigmentation is the sort of thing that would make Pantone execs weak in the knees and creamy in the jeans. They’ve also apparently taken steps to help you look pretty without getting some sort of exotic finger cancer by eliminating a lot of toxic junk. So, I’m part of your Cult, Smithy, I’ve drank the pretty polish Kool Aid.
