Phthalates In Nail Polish Work As Plasticizers
DBP belongs to a family of chemicals called phthalates, which are added to some plastics to make them flexible. So, how do you know what substitutes to look for? Well, it is helpful to understand how nail polishes are made in the first place. For example, what is the function of phthalates in nail polishes, and will nail polishes work without them?
To answer the question, as nail polish ingredients, phthalates function as plasticizers, which are chemicals. They are added to plastics to make them softer and pliable so that they do not crack and break easily. In nail polishes, they prevent chips and cracks. Obviously, removing all of them will negatively affect the quality of the product.
So, is it possible that when one phthalate is removed, the one that takes its place is less notorious only because it has less data, or has received less bad press? Also, does the removal of one phthalate make the nail polish non-toxic?
Essie Vs Opi The Best Nail Polish Brand
Nail polish, in some form, has been around since about 3000 B.C. and modern nail polish was developed in the 1930âs.
Of course in that time, the formulations, ingredients, colors, and types of polish have changed substantially. We now hear terms like ânail lacquer,â ânail enamel,â âgels,â and âacrylicsâ in addition to ânail polish.â
Wondering what all those terms really mean and what the difference is? So were we, so we did some research and found out that there is actually a great deal of debate as to the difference between lacquer, enamel, and polish.
Some companies say that lacquer and enamel last longer than polish, yet others say that they are identical. Without an industry standard defining the difference, companies are able to call their products whatever they wish. From a practical standpoint, consider lacquer, enamel, and polish to be the same product. They are all a nail color which is painted onto your natural nails and does not require any special curing process.
Gel and acrylics, however, are indeed different from each other and from polish. Gels are brushed onto nails in much the same way as standard nail polish with a base coat, color coats, and top coat. The difference with gel is that each coat must be cured or hardened under an LED or UV light for 2-3 minutes. Gels appear similar to standard polish, however they are stronger and last longer .
Hot Baths Or Showers Can Cause Gel Polish To Lift
“A gel manicures worst enemy is hot water, says Rita, hence why soaking them is the most effective way to get them off. “Long baths, showers, or time spent in a hot tub can cause lifting, so try your best to avoid these or keep them to a minimum and always wear rubber gloves when you do the dishes! Duly noted.

Solvents In Nail Polish Make A Nail Polish Smooth
For starters, solvents are the carriers of the other ingredients and help the nail polish flow smoothly. There are four solvents in the OPI nail polish: ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, and diacetone alcohol.
According to the European Chemicals Agency database , ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and isopropyl alcohol may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Although these risks are more applicable to occupational settings, it is good to minimize inhalation of these solvents by applying the nail polish in a very well-ventilated room. The EWG rates them as low hazard ingredients as well.
Exercise caution with diacetone alcohol as one of the nail polish ingredients.
As for diacetone alcohol in the OPI nail polish, the EWG gives it a rating of 1 out of 10. However, the US OSHA lists various respiratory issues and even damage to liver and kidneys. Plus, it limits airborne exposure to 50 ppm over an 8-hour work shift . And the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel has not reviewed diacetone alcohol for safety yet, due to insufficient data. .
So, the conclusion about the solvents is that they are toxic in bigger quantities. You can reduce the potential health harms by good ventilation and infrequent use of nail polish and visits to salons.

Give Your Skin Some Tlc After The Gel Manicure Is Removed
“It’s very important that the surrounding skin and cuticle, as well as the nail plate itself, be rehydrated with a thick emollient such as Aquaphor or an overnight mask like Nails Inc.’s Overnight Detox Nail Mask post-removal in order to rehydrate and repair the surrounding skin, cuticle, and nails,” Dr. Adigun says.
Nail Polish Longevity Test
No matter how great your nail polish looks when first applied, if it doesnât last a reasonable amount of time, it hardly seems worth the cost and effort.
To compare the longevity of Essie and OPI nail polishes, we applied 2 coats of Essie nail polish to the left hand of our model and 2 coats of OPI to the right. Since we didnât want our results to be impacted by external factors, we decided to forgo base coats and top coats.
Our model wore the polishes for 5 days while being sure to consistently handle common objects with both hands throughout the day to evenly test the durability of both brands. We took photos of her hands at the end of each day and compared the results.
Day 1: Both the Essie and OPI manicures were 100% intact with no chips
Day 2: The Essie manicure had a slight dent in the polish on one finger. OPI had chipping starting on the tip of one finger and the base of another.
Day 3: Essie had an additional small chip on one finger. OPI now had chips on 3 fingers.
Day 4: Essie and OPI both had chips on all 5 fingers.
Day 5: Essie and OPI both had chips on all 5 fingers.
While both Essie and OPI ended up with chips on all 5 fingers by day 4, the Essie chips were not quite as large as the OPI ones. Essie also didnât feel like it chipped quite as easily as OPI did.

Is Opi Really Better Than The Rest
Professional nail technicians and customers rave about OPI’s rich colors, quality, and durability. Some say it is the “gold standard” in nail polish. That said, there are just as many that say OPI is the same as any other brand and chips easily.
OPI maintains high standards and verifies the quality and safety of their products through a team of scientists who assist in the creation of OPI’s many innovations. OPI nail lacquers contain highly pigmented colors in a super-rich, long lasting, and chip resistant formula.
Many polishes have a narrow brush, which more times than not, leave you with a very streaked manicure. OPI nail lacquers have an exclusive ProWide brush which is designed to evenly distribute color to the nail. This means no streaking in the polish application.
OPI nail lacquers are also free of toluene, dibutyl phthalate , and formaldehyde. They reformulated their lacquers after a public campaign for changes in the nail care industry in 2006. OPI is considered a “green” product due to the absence of these three toxins.

Let Your Natural Nail Breathe In Between Gel Manicures
Whether or not you opt for a gel or traditional polish formula, the truth is that regular manis of any kind can weaken your natural nails. “The manicure process can lead to dehydration and thinning of the nail plate,” says Dr. Adigun. “I’ve seen my clients come in with peeling, thin, breaking, discolored nails and even painful nail beds,” explains Jenna.
But that fact isn’t to deter salon regulars, nor those who live for an at-home manicure. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Adigun, by not looking at your natural nail at least every two weeks you won’t be able to properly assess its condition, plus you might even be missing infections and in certain, severe cases, tumors. The thick, armor-like coating of polish also blocks nails from being able to transfer oxygen, explains Jenna.
Dr. Adigun encourages patients to avoid back-to-back gel appointments to prevent lasting damage. “I always tell my patients to go on a gel ‘honeymoon,'” says Dr. Adigun. “This break will allow their nails to rehydrate and repair.”
I Use Credible Sources To Form My Opinion About Product Ingredients
After I had a baby in 2012, I did not go back to my job as a financial analyst at the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. Instead, I used my analytical skills and nine years of college education to make sense of home and body products. Since then, I have become a sought-after speaker and a consultant for consumers, manufacturers, and online retailers. To see what documentary film I was interviewed for, visit my About page.
As my client, you can get help with understanding how the usage of certain products may increase your potential risks. Together, we will examine your health condition, genetics, overall exposures, the methods and frequency of product applications, and stress level. I believe that stress is the biggest toxin of all.
Furthermore, to form my opinion about ingredients, including nail polish ingredients, I look into a number of credible sources. They are reports produced by the European Chemicals Agency database, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, and the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel. Plus, I pay a hefty fee to read animal, clinical, and epidemiological studies in full in the US National Library of Medicine. I also check the opinions of the Environmental Working Group , and our viewpoints are not always the same. If you use the EWG database, be sure to check out my How to Use the Skin Deep Database the Right Way post.

Plasticizers Prevent Chips And Cracks
As I mentioned, OPI nail polish used to use dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer in the past. Now they use trimethylpentanediyl dibenzoate.
The bad news is that the CIR Expert Panel has not assessed trimethylpentanediyl dibenzoate for safety. But the good news is that the ECHA does not list any hazards. Additionally, the Skin Deep database rates it 1 with limited data.

Uv Absorbers/stabilizers Protect The Color
To start with, the UV absorber in the OPI nail polish is benzophenone-1, and it blocks color fading. The Skin Deep database rates it 4 with limited data available and endocrine disruption as a moderate concern.
For your information, benzophenones range from benzophenone-1 to benzophenone-12. For example, benzophenone-3 is also known as oxybenzone which is commonly used in sunscreens. Therefore, to differentiate between all of them, it is helpful to look at their CAS numbers. The CAS number for benzophenone-1 is 131-56-6.
Thus, in 2012, a certain benzophenone was added as a carcinogen to the California EPAs Proposition 65 list. To clarify, this is a list of chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. However, the CAS number of that benzophenone was 119-61-9. Apparently, it was not benzophenone-1.
Benzophenone-1 as the most concerning ingredient in the OPI nail polish
I consider benzophenone-1 one of the most concerning nail polish ingredients for the following reasons.
First, benzophenone-1 is linked to endocrine disruption. The Endocrine Disruption Exchange Database provides a list of in vitro medical studies we can read on the subject matter.
Further, the 2020 CIR report mentions the studies on the effects of benzophenone-1 on the proliferation and metastasis of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells expressing estrogen receptors. The scientists concluded that benzophenone-1 may accelerate the growth of MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
