    Find A Patented Product

There are plenty of good liquid nails available in the market these days. But one thing you should be careful about is that they have been patented. You can tell this from the label itself, as it will bear a patent number and a tree logo.

Always Read The Label Before Use

This product has different types and formulas, which might not work well with all surfaces or materials. So always read up on the label before applying this to anything.

Use The Right Brush Or Applicator

You might not realize it, but the way you apply liquid nails can make or break your bond. Always use a proper applicator, be it using a paintbrush or, even better, a roller. Also, read up on how much amount of adhesive is needed for optimal results.

    Dont Use On Wet Surfaces.

As mentioned before, liquid nails dry quickly and can be handled in 4 hours. But for this to happen, it needs a clean and dry surface. So, using it on wet surfaces or even damp ones will not give you the best results.

Always Clean Up Quickly And Thoroughly

Liquid nails can get messy quickly. So once you are done with the application, it is best to clean up as soon as possible with a solvent like acetone. Allow some drying time before using this adhesive on anything else.

    Never Use On Skin

No matter how much you read or follow guidelines, accidents can still happen with liquid nails. So please keep in mind that this adhesive can cause eye and skin irritation.

Don’t Forget To Seal Penetrations In The Shower Surround Wall

Watch out: don’t forget to seal around any openings you cut into your tub or shower surround before mounting the controls. Shown below: the “green cabin” shower control sealed in place.

While some shower controls are self-sealing to the shower control surround surface, when the surface has embossed grooves or ridges like the one shown here, there is some risk of water leaks behind the shower surround and into the building wall where it invites mold contamination, rot, or insect attack.

We used a white silicone caulk to seal our two penetrations in this shower surround wall. To be sure that the silicone sealant would bond well to the plastic shower surround and to the brass shower control body we wiped those surfaces with alcohol to remove any trances of oil or grease.

Jolene: When buying your adhesive, also look at the details on the adhesive tube, for wording that makes plain that the specific product you’re buying is approved for and safe for use on plastics, fiberglass or other tub surround materials. Do not buy generic “liquid nails” or some other general-purpose construction adhesive. That’s where the brand name “Liquid Nails” can be confusing.

Using DAP’s DynaGrip® as an example:

  • Surfaces must be clean, structurally sound, and free of debris.
  • Pre-cut and fit materials before applying adhesive.
  • Trim nozzle to desired bead size. ¼ recommended for most applications.
  • Puncture inner foil seal.
  • Load cartridge into applicator gun.
  • Apply a continuous bead to studs or backer substrate, adhesive may also be applied to back of tub surround panel according to tub surround manufacturers installation instructions.
  • Within 10 minutes, position and press panels firmly into place. Watch out: if you blob on the adhesive and then wait too long to press the panels in place, the dry adhesive will actually hold the panel off of the wall surface and will give a bumpy, ugly, poorly-adhered job.
  • Allow to dry for 24 hours before exposing to water or moisture.
  • Our photos above show a plastic shower surround that we installed last year we took care in selecting the adhesive and also in cross-bracing to be sure that the surround would bond dead flat to the drywall surfaces. Really? Is all that cross-bracing necessary? Not necessarily, though Loctite acknowledges that “some applications will require bracing” without being more-specific.

If you follow the tub or shower surround adhesive instructions you apply it to the wall – or to the surround back surface, wait a bit for the adhesive to become tacky, then press the surround in place.

I don’t know about contact cement but I’m pretty sure FRP is picky about adhesives. There’s a 1 gal at Walmart. Liquid Nails website lists a 1 quart size but does not include it on the drop-down tab.

I used yellow wood glue on frp. After using the scope for a bit I decided I wanted to switch to formica….It was very difficult to get the frp off, I ended up prying/chiseling it off. Rough up the frp with coarse sandpaper before applying glue.

If contact cement would work that would be a better solution, no clamping necessary. Can you try the cc on a small test piece of FRP?
