  • Using anti-fungal nail lacquers should be directed by a healthcare professional.
  • If you experience sensitivity and chemical irritation, treatment should be discontinued and a consultation with a medical specialist is recommended.
  • Any redness, itching, burning, blistering, swelling, oozing in the nail or around it should be reported to your doctor.
  • Clinical studies have shown that less than 12% of patients were able to completely cure their onychomycosis, which suggests that using nail lacquers work best when combined with other form of treatments.

Can A Professional Pedicure Cause A Fungal Infection

You might think youre safe when you get a professional pedicure. But even if your pedicure doesnt include polish, it isnt always a good idea to get this treatment.

Again, the most significant issue with toenail fungus is how quickly and easily it can spread. Not only can it spread to other toes and areas of your body, but other people.

Going to a nail salon can be a treat. Everyone likes to get pampered and leave with their nails looking beautiful. Unfortunately, it can sometimes lead to significant problems for your toenails.

How Did I Get Toenail Fungus

Can I Wear Nail Polish If I Have Toenail Fungus? What You ...

Toenail fungus usually enters the nail bed when there has been an injury to the area, such as a crack or a split.

Once the fungus enters, the warm, dark environment that it finds in shoes and socks allow it to grow and spread. The fungus starts by growing under the nail bed, making it very difficult to reach with any sort of medication.

The standard treatment usually involves prescription medication or partial or full removal of the toenail.

The fungus first appears as a black spot on the toenail. This spot can start to grow and your nail can start changing color as it progresses.

If you let it go, your nail may thicken, change color further, and even produce a foul odor . It is best to deal with the early signs before it turns into something really serious.

One of the main causes of toenail fungus is poor hygiene, and the chances of getting toenail fungus increase with age men being more likely to get it over women.

This could be due to many factors, but most likely because men typically dont take care of their foot/nail hygiene as much as women do.

What Is The Treatment Like For Laser Therapy

If you come to our Premier Podiatry and get our non-thermal cold laser therapy, youll start with a nail fungus evaluation to determine if you have onychomycosis and what the best course of treatment is.

The treatments are done in our office, which makes it easy for you. The treatment lasts about 12 minutes and is pain-free.

And theres no downtime. Well laser your fungus and youll get up and leave as nothing happened. Typically, youll come in for four treatments. But it depends on you and what your podiatrist recommends.

The laser destroys the fungus but the effects it had on your nail dont go away until the new nail grows in and pushes it off the nail bed so it can be cut off like you would when you trim your nails. It usually takes six to 12 months for a full new nail to grow in.

In addition to treatment, you can get basic care techniques from your podiatrist to keep fungus at bay going forward.

How Can I Prevent Toenail Fungus

Theres no way to guarantee that you wont get toenail fungus. But you can take several steps to help prevent it:

  • Avoid going barefoot in communal areas such as hotel rooms / showers, public showers, locker rooms and swimming pools. Most people pick up fungus in these situations. It helps to wear flip flops in these public areas.
  • If you have a family member with foot fungus or nail fungus, try to use different shower or wear flip flops in the shower to avoid coming in contact with it.
  • Trauma due to accidental or aggressive clipping of the nails can turn into portals of entry for the fungus.
  • Clean your nail trimmer before using it.
  • Do not tear or rip your toenails on purpose.
  • If you have diabetes, follow all foot care recommendations from your healthcare provider.
  • Keep your feet dry. Make sure to fully dry your feet after a shower.
  • Soak toenails in warm water before cutting them. Or you can cut your nails after a shower or bath.
  • Trim toenails straight across .
  • Wear shoes that fit correctly. They should not be too loose or tight around the toes.

  • What steps can I take to stop it from coming back?
  • Should I be aware of any potentially serious complications or treatment side effects?

Toenail fungus, less often referred to as onychomycosis, is a condition that affects the nail bed of one or more of the toes. It occurs when the skin on the toes and around the nail bed are infected with fungi, most often dermatophytes or yeast, such as Candida. Typically, when the toenail is infected, a small white spot first appears under the nail and eventually spreads to the entire nail bed. The fungus generally causes the nail to turn a dull yellowish shade and to thicken. Eventually, the infected nail becomes rough and can crumble and break off, leaving an unpleasant appearance.

Myth #: You Do Not Need A Doctors Advice For Toenail Fungus

Ideally, you would see a doctor for other types of infections. So, why not for toenail fungus infection? You might get advice from the internet or friends on home remedies, but only a doctor has the right knowledge to prescribe proper treatment. Furthermore, in case you wish to buy supplements, inform a specialist first.

How Would I Know If I Have A Nail Infection

Fungus grows in warm, moist places such as under nails. When fungus has a chance to grow in the nail, it can turn into a fungal infection, which is a common problem. Typical signs of a fungal infection include new white or yellow patches and streaks, but nails can also turn brown or green. Youll see lifting of the nail from the skin underneath, and sometimes you will see thickening of the nail. The nail will look bumpy or have ridges with crumbly debris underneath. It may even be so misshapen that it seems to be veering off to the side, or the nail may fall off completely.

If the infection is caused by bacteria instead of a fungus, you may notice redness, swelling, pain or pus in the skin surrounding the nail.

Why Is Toenail Polish Harmful

Toenail polish on its own isnt harmful. If you like to have perfectly polished toes, thats understandable. But its more important to give your toenails time to breathe once in a while.

The problem with nail polish is that it creates a seal over your toenails. Toenail fungus occurs when moisture gets trapped underneath the nail. Because our toes are usually in warm, moist, dark environments , we are creating an ideal setting for a fungus to grow and spread.

If you get a fungal infection, having nail polish on might make it harder to spot right away. Its best to treat toenail fungus early. So, if you cant see the earliest warning signs and symptoms, you could be making it harder for yourself to heal the problem later on.

What Is Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a widespread fungal infection that affects the toenails. Less commonly, nail fungus infects the fingernails. Nail fungus is also called onychomycosis.

Toenail fungus happens when fungi get between the toenail and the toenail bed . This usually happens through a crack or cut in your toe.

Tips To Keep Your Toes Fungus

Did you know that half of all nail diseases are caused by fungi? These tiny fungi sneak beneath your nail beds and can cause the toenails to become dark, brittle, and sometimes smelly.

While anyone can get toenail fungus , some people are at a greater risk. In fact, age, gender, genetics, overall health and many simple everyday habits can play a role in the development of a toenail fungal infection.

Here are the most common causes of toenail fungal infection, as well as how you can prevent toenail fungus and keep your feet healthy.

Early Treatment Is Key

Antifungal Nail Polish: What You Need to Know

When it comes to treating toenail infections, early diagnosis and proper treatment is key to eradicating the fungus as quickly as possible. Once one toenail is impacted, the infection can spread to your other toenails, making treatment more challenging. Even worse, untreated nail fungus easily spreads to other people.

At Family Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey, we often begin treatment by cutting back the infected nail to where it attaches to the toe. We may scrape the area to help get rid of some of the fungus and prescribe an oral antifungal medication. Taken over the course of 6-12 week, this medication allows a new, fungus-free nail to grow and replace the infected nail. Because of the slow growth of toenails, it can take up to four months for the infection to be truly eradicated.

For those with minor cases, an antifungal topical treatment may be enough to fight the infection. Depending on each individual case, antifungal nail polish or cream may be recommended. These topical treatment approaches are effective, but they work slower than oral antifungal medications and can take as long as 12-18 months to totally do away with your fungal infection.

Toenail fungal infections can be stubborn, but when you stick with your treatment method and use them exactly as your doctor recommends, youll be ready for summer and sandal season before you know it!
