How Do I Prepare My Nails For Gel Nail Polish

How to apply & remove Gelish gel polish

Preparing your nails for gel nail polish is very similar to what you would do before you put on regular nail polish.

First, you need to choose the length and shape you want to file your nails into.

The filing technique is different depending on the shape you want.

There are lots of different shapes to choose from and tons of tutorial videos online to show you how to file your nails into a number of different shapes like square, round, coffin and almond.

There are a few things to consider when choosing a shape.

Some shapes will work better for your nails than others.

You want to choose a shape that suits your nails, one that makes the most of their natural shape.

If your nails are naturally quite square, for example, then a square shape or a squoval shape will be easier to achieve and will suit you better.

You also want to take the condition of your nails into consideration.

If your nails are in really good condition, then you can pretty much get away with any shape you like.

However, if your nails are thin or damaged then youll probably want to keep them short and round.

Rounded nails are less likely to catch on things and get broken and they therefore usually last longer.

Although gel manicures can be beautiful and long-lasting, they can be tough on nails. Gel manicures can cause nail brittleness, peeling and cracking, and repeated use can increase the risk for skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands.

To keep your nails healthy before, during and after gel manicures, dermatologists recommend the following tips:

  • Be proactive with your manicurist. Ask if tools are sterilized, and look around to make sure he or she is cleaning and disinfecting tools after every client. In addition, never let your manicurist push or cut your cuticle, as this could lead to inflammation and infection.

  • Consider traditional nail polish instead of gel polish. This is especially important if you experience recurring nail problems or are allergic to acetone, as acetone is required to remove gel polish.

  • Dont pick gel nail polish. When the color begins to come off, dont pick at the polish or use other nails or tools to remove it. Instead, make an appointment with your manicurist to have the polish removed.

Try Not To Pick At Peeling Gel Polish

HOW TO APPLY SOAK OFF GEL POLISH by Gelish

One thing that’s pretty common among gel devotees is the picking process. When the color begins to lift, you may be tempted to remove it, almost like you would a scab. “As peeling and lifting begin, water can seep into the nail,” says Jenna. “This can harbor bacteria and possibly cause fungus. Once the peeling phase starts, it’s hard not to pick at your polish. If you rip it off, you’re probably taking some layers of your nail off with it. This kind of damage can take over six months to repair.” Dr. Adigun adds: “In one study, nail plate thickness was measured both before and after just one gel manicure and thinning was observed.” It’s not clear exactly which component caused the thinning, but one or more points in the gel process are to blame.

“When applied and removed correctly, gels are completely safe to wear on an ongoing basis, adds Rita. “Gels can certainly weaken the nails if they are peeled or pried off the nail, which can strip layers of the natural nail, or if the nail if over buffed prior to gel application.”

    Applying Soft Gel Nail Tips:

  • Put a very small bead of the Gelish soft tip gel adhesive on the underside of the soft gel tip where it will come into contact with your nails. Scrape your brush against the round edge. Depending on each nail, you would use more of this gel adhesive or less. Your little finger will need the least and your thumb will need the most amount.
  • Now attach the soft gel tip to the nail. You would start by placing the round edge of the tip next to your cuticle line so that it will be close but does not touch the cuticle.
  • Lightly press down the tip starting from the cuticle to the free edge to push out the air between your nail and the tip. You will be able to tell if you have enough adhesive or not. If it is too little, add a very tiny bead. If it is too much, remove some by scraping the excess off with a clean cuticle pusher of a small spatula.
  • You can do this because the adhesive will not dry or set without being exposed to UV light.
  • Now you can start to press the tip down harder.
  • Visually check whether the adhesive spreads uniformly on the whole nail surface.
  • When you are happy with the seal, keeping pressing the nail tip down on the nail and bring it to the UV light from a tough LED light and flash cure for 5 seconds.
  • Do this for all five nails and cure them with a regular UV nail lamp for 60 seconds.
  • Repeat this for the nails on the other hand.
