Vegan Nail Polish: The Best Cruelty Free Brands

A number of companies produce nail polish thats both vegan and cruelty free. Even the industrys largest players are entering this niche. In 2019, Sally Hansen launched an all-vegan line under the Pure brand name. And in 2021, OPI released its Nature Strong line of vegan nail polish.

Nail polish is among the least natural of all cosmetics. Its more akin to fast-drying paint than to any conventional sort of makeup. Manufacturers mix pigment into an opaque and glossy blending agent. Next, they use a strong solvent to dissolve this mixture. Except for perhaps coloring agents, no ingredients typically present in nail polish are animal-derived.

No longer is vegan nail polish a niche product. Accordingly, the market abounds with excellent vegan brands formulated without animal testing. Whatever sort of look youre seeking, you can find high quality cruelty-free brands. From restrained shades to outrageous colors, youll have no trouble finding a product that suits you.

Is Sally Hansen Cruelty Free Are Sally Hansen Products Tested On Animals

Sally Hansen is NOT cruelty free.

In order to be cruelty free, brands:

  • Must not test their finished products or ingredients on animals
  • Must make sure that their suppliers dont test on animals
  • Must not commission third parties to test their products on animals
  • Must not sell their products in stores in mainland China, or other countries where animal testing is still required by law

Lets look at Sally Hansens animal testing policy . Ive highlighted the important parts.

This is the version they have published on the US version of their website:

At Coty, we do not test our products on animals and are committed to ending animal testing across our industry. All our products are safe and have been developed, manufactured and packaged in compliance with the laws, regulations and guidelines that are applicable in each country in which they are sold. Cotys human safety experts review our ingredients, as well as the finished products, by applying the best science, based on the use of recognized alternatives to animal testing, existing safety data and, increasingly, the sharing of such data with other parties and industries.

The highlighted part above hints that they sell in China, but doesnt address that specifically.

However, this is the animal testing policy published on the UK version of their website:

So, Sally Hansen admits that their products are sold in mainland China, where animal testing is still required by law.

Therefore, Sally Hansen is not cruelty free.

Tools Of The Trade For Shaping And More

Even if you prefer to go polish-free, you need to keep your nails trimmed and shaped to look their best. We have all of the nail care tools required for you to maintain healthy, attractive fingernails and toenails.

  • Clippers cut through thick fingernails and toenails with ease, while scissors allow you to shorten your nails with more control.
  • Pick up a cuticle stick or trimmer to manage overgrown cuticles safely and easily.
  • To perfect the shape of your fingernails and toenails, purchase a durable metal nail file or disposable emery boards.

Why Cant Cruelty Free Brands Sell In Mainland China

Sally Hansen Vegan Nail Polish Good.Kind.Pure Geode to Joy

Animal testing is still happening for products sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Pre-market animal testing is required for all special-use imported products, and non-routine post-market testing on animals may also be done in cases of customer complaints.

However, please keep in mind that this doesnt apply to products sold in stores at the airports, or in Hong Kong.

Also, products can be sold online and shipped to mainland China without being tested on animals.

Below you can find the ingredients of Sally Hansens Pure Top Coat and Hardener. Even though one might think that since the the top coat and the hardener dont contain colorants, the safety score should be amazing, but it is not entirely true. As you can see below, some ingredients have a slightly higher safety score, but still nothing extreme.

Shellac is not vegan because its made from the secretion of living insects.

The shades in the line are: Lava Rocks, Meteorite, Sun-Tastic, Crystal Blue, Laven-Dear, Soothing Slate, Grape Vine, Beet It, Cherry Amore, Pomegranate Punch, Sweet Berries, Peony Origins , Fruity Papaya, Coral Calm, Eco-Rose, Pink Sapphire, Golden Quartz, Pink Cardamom, Be-Gone-Ia, Pinky Clay, Pink Cloud, Rose Petal, Soft Plum, Elderflower Power, Raw Cocoa, Mother Earth, Almond Tan, Romantic Peach, Coconut Milk, and White Tea.

Cruelty Free And Vegan Alternatives To Sally Hansen

Sally Hansen Good. Kind. Pure. Vegan Nail Polish

Sally Hansen is a brand that sells nail polish and nail products, as well as hair removal products.

There are so many beauty brands that are cruelty free! Thats why, in my opinion, theres really no excuse for supporting brands that test on animals.

Some of the best cruelty free alternatives to Sally Hansen are:

Sally Hansen Pure Vs Zoya Vs Ella+mila

I have decided to compare the Sally Hansen Pure polish with two other brands, that are often mentioned as non-toxic alternatives: Zoya and Ella+Mila. Also, to get an idea, how toxic regular polishes are, I have added one representative of nail polish that is not advertised as a cleaner product Sally Hansen Miracle GEL. Below you can find three tables with the ingredients.

Note: Unfortunately, I have not found the full ingredients list of Zoya nail polishes on their website. I have found only the ingredients present in every shade. Even though I have written to Zoya with a request for a full ingredients list, I did not hear from them hence I have used an ingredients list that was published by .

Ingredients List:
Ingredients List:Sally Hansen Miracle GEL

As you can see, Sally Hansen Pures ingredients have lower safety scores than Ella+Mila and more or less similar scores as ZOYA. Since I didnt find the current ingredients of ZOYA nail polishes to me, Sally Hansen Pure seems like the best option. One thing to note is that the most dirty ingredients are the colorants, and they do not differ much across the brands.

Is Sally Hansen Pure Non

A well-known brand, Sally Hansen, has recently launched a new nail polish line called GOOD. KIND. PURE. It is advertised as their first plant-based 100% vegan nail polish, which is 16-Free. But is Sally Hansen Pure non-toxic?

The 16-Free indicates 16 ingredients that are not present in the product. Those ingredients are :

1. Formaldehyde 14. Glycol Ether of Series E 15. Nonylphenol ethoxylate 16. Sulfate-free

Even though the list seems impressive, it does not tell us whether the Pure nail polish is non-toxic. So lets look at what is actually inside.

How did I test the toxicity?
How did I test the toxicity?

I warn you that this part is quite lengthy and boring ????, so if you just want to find out if the Sally Hansen Pure is non-toxic, , to skip this part. If you want to learn the limitations of this post, keep reading.

At first, we should look at what qualifies as a toxic substance. In Merriam-Webster dictionary toxic is defined as:

containing or being poisonous material, especially when capable of causing death or serious debilitation.

Under the definition of the term toxicity there is an excellent explanation of the relativity of toxicity :

I acknowledge that for this reason, the analysis is not entirely accurate. Also, that the resources might have some inaccuracies. However, as a regular consumer, I have chosen to use this method to help me identify at least some of the potentially toxic ingredients.

Sally Hansen Sold In China

Trial Team Tested: Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish and Top Coat

Since I can remember, Sally Hansen has never been considered a cruelty-free brand and if I recall correctly, their products were sold in mainland China where animal testing is required by law.

At some point, Sally Hansen stopped selling in China and confirmed this in an Instagram response, but just because they stopped selling in China does not automatically mean the brand is now cruelty-free.

And when I recently tried asking for clarifications about Sally Hansens current animal testing policy, I received ambiguous and unclear responses.

At this time, Sally Hansen is on our Brands with Unclear Policies List.

Although Sally Hansen has made claims some of their products are 100% Vegan, since we were unable to determine whether Sally Hansen is cruelty-free or not, we would not consider anything produced or sold by Sally Hansen to be vegan.

In order for products to be classified as Vegan by ethical elephants standards, brands must be able to verify their cruelty-free status and ensure their products, ingredients, and formulations are not tested on animals during any stage of product development and manufacturing, as well as, their products must not contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
