So, like many people, we’re entering our sixth week of Coronavirus quarantine. Unfortunately, I lost my job but my lovely wife was deemed essential. That means that we’re down to one income and one person who really need to have her nails done but can’t get into a salon.
Queue the at home salon!
Now, for the record, I have painted nails maybe ten times in my life. Today, we’ll be doing dip powder nails.
Also, my wife has said that these “don’t look terrible,” so I would expect someone with more experience to be able to pull this off pretty easily. I’m more used to finishing drywall than nails, so if I can do it, you probably can too!
Two: Dip In The Color

Tips before you get started: Before you start, there are a few things you should know. It will take you about a 1/2 hour for you to do your DIY dip nails at home. So, be prepared. Next, I am writing out every single step so that you dont have to try and figure it out. When I was trying to figure it out for myself, all of the instructions were pretty basic, and hard to follow as a newbie nail person. Im not a nail professional and, if youre reading this, Im sure you arent either.
Step 1: Starting with the basics, wipe off polish and gently push back and remove any excess cuticles for your dip nail polish to last longer, shape your nails with a file. - Step 1: Gently file the top of your nails to remove that top layer.
- Step 2: Grab some acetone, cotton balls, and foil. Soak the cotton balls in the acetone, and stick them on top of your nails. Wrap your fingertips in foil to hold the cotton ball in place.

Con: Dip Nails Can Be See Through
The first time I got dip nails done, I didnt realize how see-through they would be. They looked terrible!
I later realized that I chose a light color and didnt check to make sure the nail technician was qualified, so she didnt do enough coats using the dip powder. With lighter colors, youll need 3-4 coats.
Now, if Im seeing a new technician, I always ask if the color will be see-through before choosing it.
Pro: Dip Nails Are Inexpensive
I constantly get the question: how much do dip nails cost? The answer is very similar to gel nails. Generally, dip nails cost between $30 and $50, which is relatively inexpensive for a gorgeous manicure.

How To Remove Dip Nails
The answer to the question of how to remove dip nails is simple: you remove dip nails in the same way that you remove gel nails.
To remove dip nails, youll need a bit of a cotton ball soaked in acetone. Scrape off the top layer of the dip nails using a filer or buffer, then place the cotton ball on top of the nail and wrap the nail in tinfoil. You can also use nail clips that you can easily buy on Amazon.
Let your nails sit for 10-15 minutes then check to see if the polish has fallen off. If theres still a bit stuck on, you can gently scrape it to see if it has softened or you can wrap the tinfoil for another 5 minutes.

Please note: For each of the below steps, I would recommend that you go through them one hand at a time doing 5 nails on one hand first. You can then simply repeat the process for your other hand.
Step One: To begin your gel manicure, you should first make sure that your nails are clean and free of old polish and any dirt.
You want to ensure that they are well-groomed. This includes pushing your cuticles back following the shape and giving the nail plate a very light buff.
This is going to add a little texture for the gel to grab onto and to take hold. Just make sure you stop once your nail starts to turn whitish
Step Two: After you have prepped and cleaned each and every one of your nails, use a lint-free wipe and rubbing alcohol to cleanse the nail.
This is going to remove any debris and oils from your nail which are things that cause your Mani to not last as long.
If you have particularly oily nails, or if you often have trouble with polish or Gel lasting, I recommend using a Nail Primer. This particular one dries sticky which really helps the gel grab onto the natural nail.
With the primer, I like to just apply it in the areas of concern like around the cuticle, the sides, and the tip.
Now a quick warning from my experience if your primer is heavy-duty, if youre wanting to remove your gel sooner than a week maybe skip this step because it seems like the longer its on, the harder the removal process is.
Step Five: So now its time to apply your color gel.
