Before you break out the nail polish remover, you will need to take off the clear, glossy top coat that’s applied at the end of your gel manicure. “This will help the acetone penetrate the polish, making it easier and quicker to remove,” says Soon. “That’s key because less time soaking in acetone means less damage to your nails.” Using a coarse nail file , sand down the top layer of polish until it looks matte and powdery.

If your not sure whether you’ve removed all of the top coat, place your hand under a light and inspect your nails, says Nunez. “If you see any shiny spots, that’s where you still have top coat onand still need to file.” Go slowly and gently, and, most important, avoid filing all the way to your natural nail surface. “To ensure you are protecting the integrity of your nails, you want to still see some paint color on your nails before you soak,” says Nunez.

Gently Scrape Away The Layers And Soak Again If Needed

Once you give the acetone time to work its magic, grab the file and continue to gently scrape the layers to safely remove the gel polish from your nail. If youve soaked long enough, the first few coats will begin to peel off easily.

If you encounter more resistant layers, youll need to loosen them up with another acetone soak. Repeat the soaking-and-scraping method until youve safely removed all of the color, including the base coat.

Make It Easier To Remove

How to Remove Gel Polish Without Acetone

If you want to make it easier to remove your gel nail polish, here are a few tips:

  • Resist the urge to peel off the polish. While it might seem like a safe alternative to using acetone, it can actually cause more damage in the long term. Repeatedly peeling off manicures can cause onycholysis, a common nail condition caused by the nail lifting away from the nail bed.
  • File your nails before soaking them. It doesnt seem like it will make a difference, but it can require more soaking and scraping if you skip this step.
  • Try using a different brand of gel polish. Certain brands are easier to remove than others, but that typically means they may not last as long. Ask your nail technician for their recommendations on the easiest brands to remove.

Soak Your Nails In Acetone Wraps

Once youve buffed the shiny top coat off every nail, its time for an acetone nail polish remover soak. At this stage, you may be tempted to try to speed things up by soaking both hands at once, but Colley advises against it. The biggest tip is to just be patient, she says. Do one hand, complete it, and then move on to the other hand.

Start by saturating a piece of paper towel or a cotton ball in acetone. Here, more is more. You want it to be almost dripping wet, says Colley.

Next, place the piece of paper towel over your nail and wrap it tightly in a square of aluminum foil. Acetone evaporates, so if the package thats wrapped around your nail isnt as tight as you can get it, air is getting in there, fighting against the acetone and slowing it down, she continues. Repeat the process for each finger of the hand youre working on.

Alternatively, you can pour the acetone in a bowl and soak your fingers directly in it. However, Colley prefers the wrap technique, as its easy and mess-free.

Two: The Foil Technique

Time Required: 35-45 Minutes:

  • Gritty nail file
  • Orange stick

Whilst this secondary technique is also great at removing gel nails, I actually dont think it is as easy as the Double Boiling Soaking Method outlined above. However, I often use it in the Salon to great effect because it is pretty easy to do and not particularly messy.

The Foil method is essentially the same process, but instead of soaking your nails, you will be covering them instead. What you will be doing is resting a cotton ball soaked in acetone onto each of your nails, and then using aluminium foil to wrap the cotton ball in place.

Step One: You will first start by getting all of the items together, and by preparing the Aluminium Foil. You will need to essentially create 10 Foil strips that will be used to cover each finger.

Cut the Foil into 10 even strips, and ensure that the foil is large enough to wrap around each of your fingers. If you go slightly overboard do not worry, it will just mean that when you wrap it will be slightly more bulky on your nail.

Step Two: Next up is to file your nails. You need to do this to remove the top coat that would have been applied to your gel nails. This provides the protection from chipping and the shiny effect, which we obviously no longer need. By removing the top coat, you will find it far more easy to remove your gel nails, so this is a pretty important step for this method and its resulting success.
