  • Using two files

Before proceeding with the gel removal operation, it is necessary to understand what type of gel was used. There are two types of gels. The classic gel and the soak off gel. In any case it would be advisable to contact a professional. This is because a certain manual skill is required to be able to remove the gel in the best possible way without damaging the nail.

Make Sure You Have the Right Tools: While having your gel manicure professionally removed is optimal, with a little patience you can achieve the same, non-damaging results at home. To make it happen, you’ll need acetone, cotton balls, foil and a wood nail stick.

Maximum Strength Acetone Is a Must: As for the acetone, “no need to spend double the amount on a brand name that states it’s specifically for gel removal,” said the pros. Just make sure that it’s labeled as maximum strength and that it doesn’t say non-acetone.

Protect Your Cuticles: Creating a barrier between your cuticles and the acetone is key. For the job, Enamel Diction recommended using Vaseline or Aquaphor. Since you must cover your entire nail bed with acetone-soaked cotton to ensure that the gel is removed properly, that barrier layer will help from ravaging and drying out delicate cuticles during the process, they explained.

Moisturize Nails: Once all of the gel has been removed, “the nail beds will look dry and brittle at first so make sure to properly moisturize with a nail oil,” recommended the experts. Another way to revive nails post-gel is to take a timeout for an overnight, hydration treatment. “Apply a healthy amount of Vaseline or Aquaphor to your cuticles and gently rub it into your nail beds right before you go to bed,” shared the pros.

How Do You Take Off Gel Nail Polish at Home

Nails deserve proper treatment. Like any part of our body it is necessary to use the right products in order to enjoy a quality result. A gel cover can be really useful in many cases, especially if you want to give more thickness to the nails before applying the color. The duration of a manicure with gel reconstruction varies from 3 weeks to 4 weeks.

After this time, the gel generally tends to detach on the sides, creating a very annoying and even unsightly effect. In this case it might be tempting to want to remove the gel completely incorrectly, for example by trying to help yourself with your teeth. To some this practice may seem truly barbaric but for many women it is not entirely unthinkable. Obviously you dont need to be a professional beautician to understand that this modality is strictly not recommended.

Not only this modality, but also others can cause many problems to the nails. For example, if we decide to independently remove the gel from the nails we should at least use suitable tools and exercise utmost care. But for what reason all this?

    Loosening The Polish By Soaking

  • 1Fill a bowl with warm water, dish soap, and salt. Use a small bowl that will be big enough to submerge one or both hands. Add a couple of drops of dish soap and a teaspoon of salt.XResearch source
  • Be sure the water is quite warm or it wont loosen the gel polish. You may need to add more warm water if it gets cold while you are soaking your nails.
  • 2Soak your hand in the bowl for about 15-20 minutes. Dip your hand in the water so that all your nails are completely submerged. There is no need to move your fingers. Simply keep them still under the water for 15-20 minutes.XResearch source
  • You can soak one hand at a time, or place both hands in the bowl at once.
  • 3Take your hand out and dry it with a towel. Take you nails out of the water and dab them with a clean towel to dry. You may already start to notice some of the gel nails cracking or peeling off.XResearch source
  • If it doesnt look like the soak has loosened the nails at all, you can repeat the soaking process once again, or go straight to filing or peeling them off.
  • 4Remove the gel nails by peeling or filing. Soaking your nails will probably not take any of the gel nails off by itself. But once you have soaked your nails, it will be easier to remove them with whatever acetone-free method you choose.XResearch source
  • If you choose to file off the gel nails after soaking, be sure that your nails are totally dry before you start. This will make the filing much easier.
  • Wait 10 To 15 Minutes

Cue up some Netflix and let the acetone to do its job. If you used the soaking method, wait until you notice the corners coming loose, then as your nails are still steeping in the acetone, take an orangewood stick and gently begin to loosen the gel on each nail until it is removed completely. If you used foils and cotton, the gel manicure should slide off with the cotton ball when you remove the foil. If some residue remains stuck to your nail, again, use an orangewood stick to work it off. “When removing my own gels I use my thumbnail to scrape the softened gel off. I find it gets very close to the nail, but doesnt hurt it, Poole says.

If the gel polish is being stubborn give it another five minutes to soak and then try again patience is key here. The nails should soak until the gel appears to be bubbling, Poole says. This could take 10 minutes but Poole says its often longer. A good rule of thumb: Don’t scrape off the polish until it’s fully softened, she says.

    Gently Push Off Polish

Youll know youve soaked long enough when you see the edges of the polish curling up. When the gel is obviously breaking down or sliding off, gently use a rubber-ended cuticle pusher to clean the polish off your nail plate, advises Dr. Stern. This is a critical point in how to remove gel nail polish. Aggressive pushing and rubbing here will damage the nail bed. If you have to use more than gentle pressure, youll need to repeat the soaking step.

Diy With Tinfoil And Cotton Balls

How to remove uv gel nails without acetone

While the tinfoil method is similar to the soaking method, this technique allows you to soak just your fingernails in acetone preventing the rest of your fingertips from coming into contact with it.

This method is a little more complicated if youre doing it by yourself. By the time youre on your last few fingers, it can be difficult to apply without help.

To try the tinfoil method, you can:

  • Cut or tear your tinfoil into 10 medium-sized squares. Each piece should be large enough to wrap completely around your fingertip while holding a small cotton ball against your fingernail.
  • After filing the top of your manicure, soak each cotton ball in acetone, and place it on your fingernail starting with your nondominant hand. Use a piece of tinfoil to secure the cotton-soaked acetone to your nail.
  • Allow your nails to soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Check your nails. Once again, the polish should begin to lift away from your nails. This should make it easy for you to gently scrape the polish from your nails with a cuticle stick.
  • Apply a small drop of cuticle oil, if necessary.

    Two: The Foil Technique

    Time Required: 35-45 Minutes:

    • Gritty nail file
    • Orange stick

Whilst this secondary technique is also great at removing gel nails, I actually dont think it is as easy as the Double Boiling Soaking Method outlined above. However, I often use it in the Salon to great effect because it is pretty easy to do and not particularly messy.

The Foil method is essentially the same process, but instead of soaking your nails, you will be covering them instead. What you will be doing is resting a cotton ball soaked in acetone onto each of your nails, and then using aluminium foil to wrap the cotton ball in place.

Step One: You will first start by getting all of the items together, and by preparing the Aluminium Foil. You will need to essentially create 10 Foil strips that will be used to cover each finger.

Cut the Foil into 10 even strips, and ensure that the foil is large enough to wrap around each of your fingers. If you go slightly overboard do not worry, it will just mean that when you wrap it will be slightly more bulky on your nail.

Step Two: Next up is to file your nails. You need to do this to remove the top coat that would have been applied to your gel nails. This provides the protection from chipping and the shiny effect, which we obviously no longer need. By removing the top coat, you will find it far more easy to remove your gel nails, so this is a pretty important step for this method and its resulting success.

Many people think that a base coat is unnecessary or prefer to use one product for both the base coat and the topcoat.

No Bueno! In fact, you can extend your nail polish wear by at least a couple of days just by adding the first appropriate layer.

Its like an introduction to the basics, says Miss Pop. Your natural nails contain oil that prevents the nail polish from sticking well.

Before you can apply the color, you first need to seal the oil with a base coat. She puts on Deborah Lipman Gel Lab Base Coat.

It is recommended. Its a luxury, but I use it for 10-12 days and work by hand, she explains.

Other recommendations: CND Sticky Base Coat, Orly Bonder Rubber Base Coat.

Also, topcoats as base coats dont work because theyre thick, take a long time to dry, and the basecoat doesnt have the properties to properly squeeze out natural nail oils, she adds.

    1. Expose your Cuticle

We know that you may have heard it countless times before, but Miss Pope said this mistake is a big sin.

One thing thats rather usual among gel fans is the picking process. When the color begins to raise, you may be attracted to remove it, almost like you would a scab. As peeling and raising begin, water can seep right into the nail, says Jenna. This can nurture bacteria and also perhaps trigger fungi. Once the peeling phase begins, its hard not to choose at your gloss. If you rip it off, youre possibly taking some layers of your nail off with it. This kind of damage can take control of 6 months to fix. Dr. Adigun includes: In one research, nail plate density was determined both before and after just one gel manicure as well as thinning was observed. Its unclear precisely which component created the thinning, yet one or more factors in the gel procedure are to blame.

When used and gotten rid of appropriately, how do nail salons remove the rest of your gel nails are secure to wear on an ongoing basis, adds Rita. Gels can certainly damage the nails if they are peeled off or pried off the nail, which can strip layers of the natural nail, or if the nail if over buffed before the gel application.

    Soaking Off The Gel Nails

  • 1Fill a bowl with acetone. Acetone is a chemical that reacts with the gel nail to loosen its adhesive and free it from your natural nail. Acetone is a common ingredient in nail polish remover, but in order to remove gels, you need a concentrated amount of pure acetone.XResearch source
  • Cover the bowl of acetone with plastic wrap or foil. Use a rubber band to hold the cover in place.
  • Place the acetone in a larger bowl of warm water, so the acetone warms up. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Then remove the acetone from the outer bowl to prevent overheating. Be careful with this process, because acetone is flammable. Keep the acetone away from any direct heat sources, and warm only gently and with care.XResearch source
  • 2Protect the skin around your nails with petroleum jelly. Acetone can dry out and damage your skin, so its important to protect it with a layer of jelly. If you don’t have plain petroleum jelly, use a lotion or balm that lists it as an ingredient.XResearch source
  • Dip a cotton swab in the petroleum jelly and use it to apply the petroleum jelly around the edges of your nails. Cover the skin on your fingers down just below your top knuckles.
  • Don’t get too much jelly on your nails, since the acetone needs to be able to dissolve the gel.
  • If acetone doesn’t irritate your skin, you can dip your nails straight into the bowl instead of using cotton balls and aluminum foil. Make sure not to soak them like this for more than 30 minutes.
  • Soak Cotton Balls In Acetone

Next, soak a small piece of cotton, or a cotton ball, in acetone and place it on the nail, Poole says. Just be sure this is 100 percent pure acetone, not the standard “nail polish remover” sold at your local drugstore. “Regular nail polish remover contains acetone but is diluted,” explains Poole. “You probably could remove gel nails with regular polish remover, but you would have to allow the nails to soak for a very long time. You need pure acetone to effectively and quickly break down the gel polish.” A bottle of acetone like Pronto’s 100% Pure Acetone will do the trick.
