Completing A Nail Technician Program Or Apprenticeship
To achieve licensure as a nail technician in the U.S., candidates must first complete a course of education and training, either through a traditional nail technology program or by participating in a nail technician apprenticeship.
Nail Technology Program
The duration and structure of nail technology programs are typically designed around the state licensing requirements of a particular state. Although each state has similar licensing requirements for nail technicians, the length of the program and the programs curriculum will likely mirror the requirements for licensure in the state in which it is located. Many state boards of cosmetology maintain lists of approved nail technician programs in the state.
It is important that students understand their states requirements for achieving a manicurist license when choosing a program as to ensure the program meets state requirements. For example, candidates for a nail technician license in California must complete a program that is at least 450 hours in duration, while in Pennsylvania candidates need to complete a program that is 200 hours in duration. Some states, like California, require as much as 600 hours of training through a nail technician program, while other states, like Virginia, require as little as 150 hours of training in a nail technology program.
A nail technology program generally consists of two, distinct areas of study: theory study and practical study. Classroom study may involve curriculum such as:
Nail Tech Training Hour Requirements
Students are required to complete a certain number of training hours in addition to completing their coursework. The number of training hours required will depend on the state in which you attend school, as each has different requirements. For example, you need 250 hours of training to qualify in New York, but 600 in Arizona.
These training hours combine theory and practice, so students can expand on what theyve learned in the classroom and get hands-on experience before entering the field. Students will practice salon services on real clients, including manicures, pedicures, and advanced nail techniques.

Before going to school to be a nail technician, you must have either your GED or have completed all four years of high school and graduated. You also must be at least 16 years of age.
Lastly, you must pass a state board exam or the National Institute of Cosmetology exam. Alternatively, you could try reaching your states minimum hours of apprenticeship.

Some Courses Offered At Nail Schools
- Sanitation, both personal and for the public
- Nail care and its history
- Sterilization of instruments
- Nail diseases, problems, and disorders
- Solutions for nail problems
An often overlooked option is business courses geared toward cosmetology and salon ownership. These courses are usually not required for state board licensure. However they are invaluable for anyone who knows that they intend to open their own salon at some point. These courses can be taken at technical colleges or even in online settings. For some, a degree in business may be an option to consider. Others simply want to acquire the applicable information in order to put it into action later.
Becoming a nail pro means committing to the course of study outlined by both the chosen schooland the state board of cosmetology. Some students may need different options. Especially if they are already working full time jobs and have very little free time to devote to classes. Some students may also have free time only when school is not in session. For those students, alternative methods, such as online schooling, may be necessary. Find out about financing your nail education here.Go to Top Page
Barber And Cosmetology Schools Now Allowed At The Same Location
TDLR is making an important change to how we license barber and cosmetology schools. Effective immediately, barber and cosmetology schools will be allowed to operate at the same location.
This change will remove impediments for school operators, help streamline our regulations, and make the application review process easier during initial licensing for barbering and cosmetology schools.
Heres why were making this change: Senate Bill 2065 removed the established square footage requirements for schools and stated that the Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation may not enforce standards for barbering and cosmetology buildings or facilities that are not related to health and safety.
In response to this change in the law, and to the feedback we received during our 2018 Strategic Planning sessions, we evaluated our historic position regarding barber and cosmetology schools operating on the same premises and in the same space.
We have concluded that barber and cosmetology schools can safely operate in the same space however, schools may not operate in the same space at the same time. Schools who offer both programs must hold both school licenses and meet all requirements for both the barbering and cosmetology programs.
We believe this decision will remove burdens for schools but will not impact the health and safety of students or the standards for the barbering and cosmetology programs.
Please direct any questions or comments to the Education and Examination division.

What If I Have A Criminal Conviction
A prior conviction does not necessarily prevent you from obtaining a license there are no barrier crimes that are an absolute prohibition to licensure. State law requires the Board to evaluate applicants with past convictions on a case-by-case basis to determine whether their criminal history is related to the profession. The Board must take into account the nine factors outlined in § 54.1-204.B of the Code of Virginia. Only the full Board, voting in public session at a regular meeting, can make the decision to deny an application for licensure. If you have a criminal conviction, you must submit the Criminal Conviction Reporting Form, along with a state police criminal history report for every state where you have convictions. Once the Board receives this information, the Board may request additional documents from you pertaining to the conviction, and you may be required to attend an Informal Fact-Finding conference.
