HOW TO DO DIP NAILS AT HOME! | Revel Nail

Theres typically a gel topcoat over your dip nails, King says. If its shiny, it makes it harder for the acetone to soak through the product to remove it, therefore slowing down the removal process.

This is precisely why youll want to start the removal process by gently filing down the top, shiny coatessentially roughening up the surface of the nail polish in order to allow the acetone to seep down deeper. To do so, use a rough grit nail fil to buff down the topcoatthe thinner you buff it, the easier it will be to remove.

Lavender Violets Dip Powder Nail Color Kit

Key selling points: This three-free set of acrylic powders is beloved for the odor-free, cruelty-free formulaswhich, by the way, dont damage nail beds.

What customers say: Love this kit. The larger bottles are awesome. So much easier than gel or acrylic application. Very easy even for a beginner. I do recommend adding a little Vaseline around the threads of the bottles to help for future use in opening them. Also in between coats, after dipping into powder, I have a plain piece of paper to wipe the brush before moving on to the next nail. Helps to keep the brush from hardening from any possible dust left on the nail after wiping and adding a second coat. Overall great deal for the price. Sabrina C., amazon.com reviewer

My Powder Dip Manicure Is Growing Out How Do I Fix It

There are other factors to keep in mind to preserve your nails health, especially if you want to continue dip nail sets in the future. The most common mistake I see is that people dont soak off the nails before each new set, Atkinson says, urging people against filling in any bare growth with more powder as a quickie way to top your manicure off. Doing so can lock water or other moisture between your nail and the powder, which is a major risk. You do not want to trap any moisture between your nails, she explains. It can cause mold and fungus. Its also good to avoid picking, plucking, or prying at the gel if it lifts as doing so can cause damage to your nails underneath. Instead, soak the chipping polish off and start fresh.

Its also worth investing in cuticle oil to keep your nail beds hydrated between manicures. Contrary to popular belief, oils simply lock in moisture rather than imbuing your skin with it, so only use a cuticle oil after applying moisturizer to your hands. Cuticle oil does wonders for the nails, especially during fall and winter. Atkinson advises, To keep your nails and cuticles hydrated, cuticle oil and hand lotion is a must! It actually improves your nail health, making them stronger!

Pros And Cons Of Dip Nails

There are many, many pros and cons of dip nails that you want to be aware of before you get them done. I didnt know these pros and cons of dip nails before my first appointment and I definitely made a few mistakes during that.

Pro: Dip Nails Are Thick

My favorite part of dip nails is how thick they are. They dont chip or break easily and they almost always last until your next nail appointment, unlike gel nails.

Con: Dip Nails Can Be See Through

The first time I got dip nails done, I didnt realize how see-through they would be. They looked terrible!

I later realized that I chose a light color and didnt check to make sure the nail technician was qualified, so she didnt do enough coats using the dip powder. With lighter colors, youll need 3-4 coats.

Now, if Im seeing a new technician, I always ask if the color will be see-through before choosing it.

Pro: Dip Nails Are Inexpensive

I constantly get the question: how much do dip nails cost? The answer is very similar to gel nails. Generally, dip nails cost between $30 and $50, which is relatively inexpensive for a gorgeous manicure.

Con: Dip Nails Take A Long Time To Do

Sometimes, my nail technician needs over an hour to do my nails, especially if she needs to remove my old dip nails first.

Pro: Dip Nails Are Done At Most Salons

Because theyre growing in popularity, dip nails are now available at most salons.

Con: Salons Offer Less Dip Nail Colors

Pro: Dip Nails Are Less Damaging Than Acrylic Nails

What Are Dip Powder Nails

DIY DIP POWDER NAILS AT HOME

Also commonly referred to as SNS nails, the dip powder nail technique involves dipping the nail into colored powder , then using a clear sealant on top. The result is a longer-lasting manicure that can remain chip-free for up to a month.

As LeChat Nails Educator Syreeta Aaron points out, dip powder nails are a hybrid between gel nail polish and acrylic extensions. Dipped powder nails give you the flexibility of gel nails and the durability of acrylic nails, she says. I typically like to use the dip powder on natural nails however this system can also be used with extended nails .

Board-certified dermatologist and nail expert Dr. Dana Stern adds to this, noting that dip powder nails, while currently trendy, arent some new-fangled nail technique. Rather, theyve been around since the 80s and are simply comprised of a gentle-yet-effective glue paired with acrylic powder.

How To Apply Dip Powder Nails At Home

Have you ever wondered how people get their dip nails looking so perfect at home? Maybe youve tried dip powder before and struggled with lumps, shine, shape and a host of other issues! I still remember my first time doing my own dip nails the nail technician had made it look so easy and perfect that I HAD to try it for myself. It ended up looking like a child had painted my nails .

My first experience with dip nails sent me back to regular polish for a few months. I thought the dip system was just too difficult for me and didnt understand it how to use it properly. It wasnt until a watched a tutorial video and did a bit more reading that I tried dipping powder again. And it worked! I fell in love with dipping powder and never used regular polish again. You just cant beat how long it lasts and how quick and easy it is to apply .

Ill be going step by step how to apply dip nail powder using our own Fairy Glamor dip system and discuss some of the mistakes you might be making . I really hope this tutorial helps you on your new dipping journey and you fall in love with acrylic powder as much as I did.

If youre more of a visual person this photo dip nail application tutorial should help immensely. If you need a little more guidance, keep reading below!

Step by Step Process on How to Apply Dip Nails:

  • Lightly buff your nail beds.
  • Apply nail dehydrator . Wipe away excess moisture.
  • Apply dip base liquid to your nail.
  • Dip your finger at a 45 degree angle into the powder.
  • Is It Worth It

In a pre-pandemic world, an 11-step beauty treatment wouldn’t make my to-do list, but we’re living in unprecedented times and I’m suddenly doing unprecedented things. Also, the end result is actually quite impressive and worth the effort.

If you take the time to prep your nails correctly, that is shape, buff and apply the base layer correctly, the manicure will easily last up to three weeks.

As someone who likes to keep my nails short, I found I was filing them down after about two and ready for a colour change well before the mani was ready to be removed. It’s staying power is no different to an in-salon SNS mani.

The initial outlay might seem like a lot, but if you’re someone who goes to the salon monthly and pays $60-$70 for the pleasure, you’ll enjoy major savings three-to-four manicures in.

How To Do Dip Nails At Home

I get a lot of questions about how to do dip nails at home. The process is actually really easy if you have a steady hand and requires way less equipment than gel nails.

How To Do Dip Nails At Home: The Process

For dip nails at home, you will first need to buff your nails and do your regular manicure however you please. Once youre done, youll do a base coat and let it dry.

At this point, you can start working with the dip powder. Youll paint a coat of nail polish on, dip your nail in the powder dip, shake it off, and let it dry.

It doesnt take long at all for dip nails to dry, so once youre done with one hand, you can go right over and add the second coat. I like to do 3 coats to make sure the dip powder is thick enough.

Once youre done, youll do a final top coat. After its dry, you will then file down the nail until it looks natural. I find that it especially helps to file your dip nails on the side so theyre not too thick, but I like to leave the thickness in the middle. Dont worry about ruining the top coat: thats the point!

Once your nails look 100% natural, you can use your final top coat. This top coat will take a bit to dry but dries quicker than regular nail polish.

And thats exactly how to do dip nails at home, easy and simple! You dont need a UV light and will find that this is an easy process to do while watching Netflix or listening to music.

How Long Does A Dip Powder Manicure Last

Get excited: As Aaron points out, dip powder nails can last anywhere from two weeks to a month depending on how hard you are on your nails . If you do your own nails, this is great because it means less time dedicated to a gorgeous nail look. And, if you get your dip powders done, it means less money in the long run because they dont require as much maintenance.

    Kiara Sky French Starter Kit

Key selling points: At $94, this kit is a little pricier than others, but the rave reviews prove that its well worth it. The set includes everything you need for French manicures on different skin tonesincluding three shades of pinkas well as a brush saver and nourishing cuticle oil.

What customers say: I was a bit skeptical spending this much on a kit I wasnt sure would be worth it or sure a novice can use it with no drill. It is. I spent so much money going to the salon every two weeks to have my nails done. Sometimes they would be great other times the powder would chip or split from my nailand who has time to keep running to and from a salon to fix something you paid for a professional to do right the first time? This has paid for itself in three uses. Ive found that if I follow the instructions included in the kit, I dont have the foggy, matte issue with the top coat Ive read in other reviews and had myself initially. I use it on my natural nails. I have only a hard nail file and a buffer . Very happy not having my nails drilled painfully paper thin. They have grown out well and thickened back up after properly soaking them off. I havent tried the French yet. Im very particular about my line, so Ill practice solids a bit more. Cant wait to try their brighter colors for spring and summer. Zaya, amazon.com reviewer

In this instance, perfect really wont happen without a lot of practice. Doing your own dip powder nail set isnt impossible, but it might take some getting used to before getting it right. Also, remember that preparation is key and that while making mistakes wont ruin your manicure, having the right tools to correct them will save you a lot of time and trouble.

Even so, while the thought of DIY dip powder manicures is appealing, I think Ill leave this technique to skilled professionals. I love how gel nails look, how quickly they dry, and the dipping process is fun but I realized that Id much rather sit and wait for standard nail lacquer to set after application than wait for it to break down enough to come off when Im more than ready to see it go. When the day comes for me to visit a salon again, Ill give gel or powder polish another try this time, in the care of expert hands.
