HOW TO DO YOUR OWN DIP NAILS AT HOME! *BEGINNER FRIENDLY*

It is almost ashame that the dip powder nail treatments go on so easily. After all, this isone of the reasons that they are so popular. However easy and quick theapplication, their removal can be tricky. The key is to remember one veryimportant adage: Dont rush or force the process!

If you try to take shortcuts, you might find yourself with a mess or a problem. Instead, just gather the materials needed and give yourself the amount of time suggested for the best outcome.

Diy Or Dont: The Results

In this instance, perfect really wont happen without a lot of practice. Doing your own dip powder nail set isnt impossible, but it might take some getting used to before getting it right. Also, remember that preparation is key and that while making mistakes wont ruin your manicure, having the right tools to correct them will save you a lot of time and trouble.

Even so, while the thought of DIY dip powder manicures is appealing, I think Ill leave this technique to skilled professionals. I love how gel nails look, how quickly they dry, and the dipping process is fun but I realized that Id much rather sit and wait for standard nail lacquer to set after application than wait for it to break down enough to come off when Im more than ready to see it go. When the day comes for me to visit a salon again, Ill give gel or powder polish another try this time, in the care of expert hands.

Step #: Apply Base & Dip A 3rd Time

Pick up your Base once again and apply it to the ENTIRE nail, and dip once more into your color. Youll notice that with each layer, youre getting closer to the cuticle. This is done to prevent the cuticle area from getting bulky which could cause lifting of your manicure. PRO TIP: Always brush parallel to the nail to ensure the brushes dont poke or indent the powder for a smooth, perfect application every time!

My Powder Dip Manicure Is Growing Out How Do I Fix It

There are other factors to keep in mind to preserve your nails health, especially if you want to continue dip nail sets in the future. The most common mistake I see is that people dont soak off the nails before each new set, Atkinson says, urging people against filling in any bare growth with more powder as a quickie way to top your manicure off. Doing so can lock water or other moisture between your nail and the powder, which is a major risk. You do not want to trap any moisture between your nails, she explains. It can cause mold and fungus. Its also good to avoid picking, plucking, or prying at the gel if it lifts as doing so can cause damage to your nails underneath. Instead, soak the chipping polish off and start fresh.

Its also worth investing in cuticle oil to keep your nail beds hydrated between manicures. Contrary to popular belief, oils simply lock in moisture rather than imbuing your skin with it, so only use a cuticle oil after applying moisturizer to your hands. Cuticle oil does wonders for the nails, especially during fall and winter. Atkinson advises, To keep your nails and cuticles hydrated, cuticle oil and hand lotion is a must! It actually improves your nail health, making them stronger!

How Should I Prepare My Nails For Powder Dipping

Dipping powder set Interested in doing your own dip powder ...

If you want good results, you need a good base.

Heres how to prepare your nails for dipping:

  • Wash your hands well.
  • Push back your cuticles and trim any excess skin.
  • Buff the surface of your nails lightly to create a slightly rough texture. Use a buffing tool for this if you see any stripes or marks from buffing, youre being too rough!
  • Apply a sanitiser.
  • At this point, dont touch your face or your hair! If you do, natural oils will get on the nail surface and your powder wont stick as well.
  • Once your nails and buffed and clean youre ready to start applying!

I know youre probably gonna wanna get your nails done as soon as possible, but dont be tempted to skip or rush the prep, your nails wont look as good and wont last as long.

Why Do My Nails Hurt After Applying Acrylic Dip Powder

Dont worry, a little soreness after applying acrylic dip powder is fairly common.

It usually means that you or your nail tech have been a little too enthusiastic with the filing.

You newly finished nails could also be causing discomfort simply because they are too long.

If you are not used to long nails youll probably catch them and bash them a lot which can also cause soreness.

My Journey To Learning How To Do Dip Nails

Well, let me tell you, finding the right products to do my own nails was VERY difficult. I had to spend the time trying things and then wait a week or two to see how they held up.

It was all smooth sailing. NOT!

I found it was actually quite hard to do professional nails from home when you have no idea what youre doing! Who knew!?

I tried many different products, different techniques, and finally came into a rhythm.

I have now been doing my own dip nails on my fingertips and gel nails on my toes for 3 years now.

Not only do my at-home nails look professional, theyre extremely cheap!

How To Remove Dip Nails At Home

how I do my own dip nails at home!

Dip nails are one of the newest trends in nail salons around the country. There are multiple reasons for this, the largest being that it is much healthier for your nails than acrylic or gel nails. Another big reason is the sturdiness the dip powder brings to your nails, allowing for less chipping and longer time in between each nail appointment.

Taking that into consideration, home dip nails removal is inevitable. This is where you can get into trouble. While it is true that dip or SNS nails are better for your nails in application, this can all be reversed with improper removal.

If you are anything like me, as soon as signs of chipping or one broken nail happen, the entire nail set is out the window. If you can take away only one thing from this entire article, dont fall into the urge to rip off your nails! This is not only a bad habit, but extremely damaging to your nails and can take months to recover from.

When you rip any nail off, this tears multiple layers off your nail bed, keeping your nails brittle and weak. This defeats the entire purpose of dip nails. Dip nails are better for your nails because they do not file down layers of your nail beds in order to apply. Instead, they rely on multiple coats of powder and proper filing to create an effortless finished product.

How Much Money Will You Save By Doing Your Own Nails

I used to invest in getting my nails done because I do believe a well-manicured nail positively impacts my life, both in my career and my first impressions with people.

When I have my nails done, I feel more put together when they look flawless and I feel better about myself. I find that even when Im in yoga pants at the gym covered in sweat, having a shiny beautiful nail makes me feel feminine and sexy.

Plus, I work for a Fortune 500 company and meet with global organizations on a daily basis so I need to look professional.

Therefore, a beautiful nail is a MUST in my life.

However, getting your nails done every three weeks can get expensive quickly. I had gotten them done for years at nail salons, until I calculated how much I was spending.

I was spending $65 every three weeks on getting my nails done.

I realized I was spending $1,000 per year just on my nails. That amounts to over $5,000 over the last 5 years just for my fingernails!

Not to mention, I was spending another $55 every 3 weeks to get my toes done! All together, I was spending over $2,000 a year on toes and finger nails, which amounts to over $10,000 over the last 5 years!!

HOLY SMOKES!!! Thats ridiculous. I could buy a car for that! There must be another way! I wanted to invest that money in the stock market so it could earn interest over the years and make me money, instead of going down the drain.

I decided I needed to take it in-house and do my nails at home to save money. How hard could it be?

    How To Remove Dip Powder

While you may think that removing powder dip is different than removing gel, its actually a similar process. Syreeta Aaron, LeChat Nails Educator, shared with HollywoodLifeEXCLUSIVELY, Removing dip nails is very similar to removals of any artificial nail enhancement. Luckily, Syreeta shared the exact steps you can take to remove the color from your nails and you can follow them below.

Step 1: Its always best to file off the top layer of the artificial nail .Step 2: Once that top layer has been removed you may then soak in pure acetone for a faster soak. The less acetone percentage of a remover can prolong the process. Soak in a small bowl for at least 5 to 7 minutes.Step 3: Then take a paper towel or your finger to rub off the first layer then file off the product that has been soaked. Repeat the process as needed until the dip has been completely removed from your nail.Step 4: Once the product has been completely removed you may then begin a manicure process. This process is needed to replenish oil and nutrients back into your natural nails.

Instead of wrapping your nail in foil and cotton covered in acetone, Syreeta suggests fully soaking your nails for 5 to 7 minutes as the dip is thicker and harder to remove than gels.

HOW TO DO DIP NAILS AT HOME!

I think we all learned how to DIY a few new things in 2020 one of my favorites was learning how to DIY dip powder nails at home. Listen if I can do this, you can do this.

I am absolutely terrible at painting my nails it often looks like a 5 year old did it when I try to use standard nail polish . Ive even tried gel polish in the past, and I still cant kick that urge to peel it off after a few days. I had heard of dip nails , and after seeing a Youtuber try another brand of at-home dip powder, I gave it a try. To my surprise, it wasnt that hard!

Its also incredibly durable. I can normally get at least two weeks out of a set of dip powder nails . Dip powder, when using the right polishes, hardens into an incredibly tough coat on your nails, making it virtually impossible to peel. I am ROUGH on my nails when following these steps, they hardly ever chip at all .

The best part is the amount of money youll save over the salon. You can get dozens of uses out of a kit thats under $50 thats about what youd normally pay for one set of dip powder nails. To me, its also a time-saver I can do my nails in an hour or two every few weeks while I watch TV at night the beats spending hours at a salon, in addition to commute time.

      Benefits Of Dip Powder Nails

DIY dip powder nails have been my go to nail for all of 2020. Due to the above reasons, Ive been doing my own dip nails for almost a year now.

I always get compliments on them. The nails are not brittle, nor do they chip. My nails actually grow extremely long with dip powder and dont get damaged whatsoever. In fact, I have the same long nails I used to have with acrylic tips, except they are my REAL nails! People are always shocked when I tell them theyre my actual nail.

My dip powder nails are shiny and they look professional, clean, and classy.

      Why Is Monomer Important

The monomer is almost more important than the actual acrylic powder. This crucial liquid is what changes the dust from a powder to a liquid and then to a solid as the acrylic cures. Without an acrylic monomer, the polymerization process doesnt happen, so you can probably see why monomer fluid is vital to the entire acrylic process.

In short, with no monomer liquid, your acrylic powder will stay an acrylic power.

Are There Any Substitutes to Monomer liquid?

Unfortunately, there are no perfect substitutes for the monomer liquid.

How To Diy A Powder Dip Manicure At Home:

      Step 1:Prep Your Supplies

The first mistake I made was assuming that everything I needed was already in the kit or available to me at home. What more could you need besides clippers, files, and polish remover? But as Tricia Atkinson, a nail technician in Richmond, VA, tells Apartment Therapy, you need to prepare your nails thoroughly and effectively before applying a gel nail set. For materials, youll need to start with basics: nail clipper, nail file, buffer, and of course your dip system of choice, she says. I would start with a clean and bright workspace. Make sure you wash your hands, dont forget to trim and file your natural nails to your liking, and always push those cuticles back.

Step 2: Apply the Bonding Agent, Then the Powder and Repeat

Some steps overlap with regular nail care, but theres a process to applying dip powder thats more involved than simply dipping your nails in the powder, as the name implies.

      • First, you need to apply the bonding agent that the powder will stick to.
      • After a few layers of applying the glue like you would a polish then dipping your fingertip into the powder, you set it with an activator, and then add the shiny top coat.

Step 3: Budget Time for Mistakes, Especially on Your First Try

When the dip powder trend first came out, I was dubious. The first time I tried it, it lasted me less than a week and I was convinced it was all a hoax. I vowed that I would never try dip again..

Of course, I did, otherwise you wouldnt be reading this post. If you dont know what dip nails are, its a technique somewhere between a gel manicure and acrylics. Whereas gel polish is cured under a UV or LED light, dip powder sets by itself with the help of a base coat and an activator coat. First, a base coat is painted on and then the nail is dipped into a colored powder to coat the nail. The powder is a combination of fine grain acrylic powder and resin . This combination isnt used to form nails like regular acrylic powder and instead is essentially a different type of manicure. Acrylics, on the other hand, are made up of large grain acrylic powder mixed with a liquid monomer. This gives the acrylic its strength and creates that really strong, fake nail.

After the nail is coated in the dip powder, typically another 1-2 rounds of base coat + powder are performed to build up color. The manicure is finished off with an activator coat followed by a top coat for shine. The activator reacts with the base coats on the nail and hardens the resin in the powder quickly as well as helping the top coat dry.

      Dip Nails Tutorial:

      4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the next nine nails. Remember to dip after applying the base coat on each nail.

      14. Wash yo hands!

      18. Enjoy your nails!
