Professional Pedicure: Cut And File Nails

After you’ve washed and dried your feet, it’s time to go for nail trimming. Remember that it is better not to give them rounded shapes because they may become incarnate, but you can enjoy a balanced cut, so that later when it comes to color it looks much more uniform. Of course, in addition to the cut itself, you need to file them. Since this step is essential to be able to eliminate rough parts or edges that are always protruding.

Get Rid Of The Old Junk

Start with a clean sheet. You need to make sure that your toenails are polish-free. As cotton balls will most likely leave frizzies, use cotton pads instead. Saturate cotton pads with nail polish remover. One thing to keep in mind is to use a non-acetone remover as acetone remover can be harsh and weakens and dries nail beds. Then, press the saturated cotton pad on your toenails and soak in for a few seconds. Wipe off the polish with the pad. If they still leave traces, nail experts recommend using lemon juice to remove them completely. With a few tries of course. Once you get rid of nail polish and debris, wear your beauty cap. Here comes the fun part.

Finish With A Top Coat And Cuticle Serum

To seal in the color, finish with a quick-drying top coat like Essie Good to Go Top Coat . Then, carefully clean up any rogue polish marks or errors with a cotton swab dipped in polish remover. Once finished and dry, you’re free to admire your “hard work.”

To get the most out of your pedicure, Tuttle recommends using a cuticle serum daily and reapplying your top coat every few days to avoid chipping.

Once you’ve given this 10-step tutorial a shot and realize just how easy the process really is, you might not ever make it back into the salonwhich is good news for both you and your wallet.

Five: Push Back The Cuticles

Should I have a professional pedicure every month?

Next, you are going to push back the cuticles using an Orange Wood Stick wrapped in Cotton Wool.

The reason for the Cotton Wool is because if you use just the orange wood stick on its own, its too harsh and you can cause pain to your client/yourself.

To wrap the stick, open up a Cotton Wall pad, and twisting the Orange Wood Stick into the Cotton Wool like Candy Floss.

This Cotton Wool will just provide a bit more protection for the clients/ your own fingertips

Now, using the Orange Wood Stick, youre now going to gently push back the cuticles.

Youll find that the nail plate appears a little bit longer once you have pushed the cuticles back effectively.

Now, use a pair of Cuticle Nippersto tidy any excess cuticle you have. Be very careful with these nippers to avoidnipping your client.yourself.

Only remove any excess cuticle if there is any present. If you are working on neat cuticles, you may not have to remove much if any at all.

Be careful and just remove any excess cuticle. Again this will just make your polish look much better when finished.

The other thing youre looking to remove with the cuticle nippers are any loose bits of skin that hang off at the side of the nail. These are known as Hang Nails. You want to nip those to ensure they have been removed.

Dont Paint Or Polish Over Discolored Toenails

Discolored toenails are infected. Paint and polish trap fungus infections inside the nail and make them harder to treat.

And dont leave toenail polish on your toes forever. After about two weeks, it begins to flake and leave little white spots. Its best to remove toenail polish before that happens. Its OK to remove toenail polish just before your pedicure but you dont have to.

Clean Your Nails Before Starting

Clean nails are the key to a long-lasting pedicure. If youre massaging your feet with oil or lotion prior to painting your nails, always wipe the nail plate clean with polish remover before you begin painting. This will help the polish stick. Even if your nails are bare, give them a quick swipe with polish remover to remove any dirt and oil from your nails.

Don’t skip this stepit’s crucial if you want your pedicure to last, since the base coat is what provides a barrier between the natural oils from your nails and the polish.

Pro tip: If you’re having trouble reaching your toes, prop your leg up on another table or a chair. Just be sure to lay a towel down to prevent any spills and resulting stains on your furniture.

Clip And Shape Your Nails

Now is time for a little trimming! You want to make sure your nails are clipped and filed into shape. Jagged or chipped edges just dont look very professional, wouldnt you agree? You can easily achieve a professional look to your nails by clipping their lengths. They should be shortened to just above the edge of your finger, no longer or no shorter.

Then, use your nail file, electric nail filer, or emery board to smooth those edges and create a nice, rounded nail. The perfect professional nails are usually rounded or square-rounded along the edges. However, how you want to do your nails, the look and shape is up to you. As long as you feel comfortable, then youve managed to clip and file your nails like a pro!

Whats The Problem With A Fish Pedicure

Lets think about this a moment. Where exactly do fish go to the bathroom? Why, in their tub, course! Do you really want to stick your feet in a tub of hungry fish, water, and fish poop?

Thats not the only problem. There have been numerous reports of serious infections, some of them requiring amputations of all the toes after nail salon clients indulge in a fish spa.

Doctorfish often carry a kind of bacteria known as Mycobacterium marinarum. In the same general grouping of bacteria as those that cause tuberculosis, these bacteria can cause infections that work their way through the skin to the bones of the toes and feet, at which point the only safe treatment is amputation.

Fish pedicures pose no danger if you never have them. You probably do not want to patronize a salon that still offers them.

Take Care Of The Cuticles

Did you know that cuticles are the barrier of protection for your skin around the nails from possible infections?

So, you need to be extra careful while tending your cuticles, which is the next step. There is no hurry! For this, saturate a cotton pad with some cuticle oil and soften your nail bed. Give a massage on each of your toenails by gently rubbing the pads on them. When the cuticles are soft enough, go ahead and push the dead skin back with a cuticle pusher to get a nice shape. That will give your toenails a tidier look.

Rub a little more cuticle oil in because it will make the pedicure last longer. Then, repeat the step with the next foot by giving each toenail the attention it deserves. Then, dab another cotton pad with saturated nail polish remover on your toenails to remove excess oil. Most of the salons and spas cut your cuticles for you because that is a part of the pedicure process. But it is not recommended to do it at home. That might cause severe infection or damage as you are not trained to cut your cuticles by yourself.

A pedicure is the most luxurious gift that you can give your feet. After walking and standing for hour after hour, day after day, your feet will appreciate a little TLC. Salon pedicures tend to be pricey, especially if you opt to treat yourself on a monthly basis. But you can perform your own professional pedicure in the privacy of your own home, pamper your sore feet and save yourself some money.

How To Do A Pedicure At Home In 10 Simple Steps

Lets accept it regular pedicures can be one of the least prioritised beauty treatments ever. Most of us may get regular manicures, but pedicure is something we save only for special occasions or for the time when our feet look absolutely gross.

But thanks to the lockdown, going to your favourite nail spa to give your rough and calloused feet a pedicure may not be on the cards just yet. But does this mean you have to continue living with those uneven toe nails, chipped nail polish and cracked heels? Absolutely not, because we are about to tell you how to give yourself a super quick, simple yet highly effective pedicure at home. Isnt that awesome? Lets begin!

  • Foot file or pumice stone
  • Foot lotion or body lotion
  • Base & top coat
  • Nail polish

Now that you have everything you need for an at-home pedicure, lets see how to give yourself one in a few simple steps.

Trim File And Buff Your Nails

To trim your toenails, it’s best to use high-quality clippers made specifically for that purpose, such as Tweezerman Deluxe Toenail Clippers .

If you need to trim them, cut your toenails straight across to just above the skin. Smooth out the raw edge with a nail file, working in one direction until they’re even and have been formed to the shape you like. Tuttle recommends using a dual grit file the fine-grade surface is for smoothing the nail edge, while the coarser surface is for shortening and shaping nails.

And, of course, make sure to factor in your lifestyle when choosing the length and shape of your toenails. “If you are active, short, round toenails are best because longer nails tend to get bumped in your sneakers and lead to bruising, which can lead to losing your toenail,” Tuttle says.

Time To Clip File And Buff

Next, you will treat your toenails. Wait for at least five minutes to start trimming or clipping your toenails. Give your toenails time to dry up and harden for this step. Take your nail clippers and clip your nails straight across to just above the skin in the desired length. Clip them with little snips rather than all at once to not risk breaking the nails. Make sure that you dont cut too close or you might risk an ingrown nail. If you are someone who wears sneakers most of the time, its wise not to have long nails as they tend to get bumped in your sneakers, leading to bruising.

Now, use the file to get the desired shape. Smoothen out the raw and rough corners and edges by working in one direction. Smoothen them until they are even and in the shape you desire. I would recommend a square shape with rounded edges rather than oval shape which has high chances of ingrown nails.

Next comes the buffing block. After you are done with filing, gently buff your nail beds to smoothen out any ridges that will make the nail polish look uneven. Thats the end of toenail treating! This could be the regular spoiling of your tips and toes.

Soak Your Toes And Feet

Before you start soaking, your first joband this is importantis to go around your house and gather every candle you can find. Oh, and get yourself a glass of wine while youre at it. The trick to making an at-home pedicure feel like a spa experience instead of, you know, rubbing your own feet in your too-small-for-comfort apartment, is setting the ~mood~ at your makeshift pedicure station.

Once the ambiance is right, youre ready to soak your feetwhich softens tough skin and cuticles . I suggest using a basin if you have one, but your bathtub is also a sound option. Fill er up with warm water and add a liberal scoop of skin-soothing bath salts . Let your feet soak for a few minutes before moving to the next step.

For the men who do not have time to go out and make an appointment at a salon for a pedicure, they can do it at home! All by themselves!

  • Soak: Take a tub and semi-fill it with hot water. Add some Epsom salt to it. And then dip your feet and soak your legs for 10 minutes. Play some good music while your feet are getting all hydrated and soften. And relax. After 10 minutes, take your feet out and wipe it with a towel.

When You Manicure Your Nails It Is Important To Know A Few Things First

What type of maintenance does the client want and is the area to be manicured healthy and safe for you to work.

You should look for any areas that seem irritated, tears in the skin, rashes or any other area that may not be safe to work on. Always make sure that you have completed a proper consultation and you and the guest have agreed on the proper path for the service.

I make a rule of thumb with my clients and always ask if they would like to have cuticles cut or simply buffed and cleaned up. You never want to cut skin that you feel can make a client bleed. Should this happen you need to have your styptic powder or first aid kit and be sure you have your protective gloves to keep both you and the client safe.
