Treating Fungal Nail Infection

Treatment may not be necessary in mild cases of fungal nail infection. For more severe or troublesome cases, antifungal medication may be recommended.

A fungal nail infection is unlikely to get better without treatment, but if you’re not bothered by it you might decide it’s not worth treating because treatment can take a long time, may cause side effects, and isn’t always effective.

Whether or not you decide to have treatment, you should still follow the self-help advice below to help stop the condition getting worse or spreading to others.

Scholl Fungal Nail Treatment: The Best Fungal Nail Treatment For Thickened Nails

Price: £13 |

One of the symptoms of a fungal nail infection is a thicker nail, which isn’t exactly helpful because it makes it harder for a treatment to penetrate and reach the infection underneath. So foot experts Scholl help things along by including five disposable files in the box. For the first few weeks of treatment, you file the surface of the infected nail before brushing on the liquid. After four weeks, ditch the files and apply the solution once a week until the nail has grown out. It’s a little more fiddly than Excilor, but it’s good value and boasts many happy customers.

Price: £22 |

The bottle with built-in dropper is much bigger than the likes of Excilor , but that’s partly because the Imperial Feet solution itself is much milder, relying on natural anti-fungal ingredients including tea tree oil to clear up the infection. As much as we welcome natural ingredients, this treatment will struggle to penetrate an infected nail, so it’s best kept for clearing up milder infections and preventing recurrence.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Fungal Nail Infection

THE BEST AND ONLY FOOTCARE PRODUCT TO CLEAN AND DRY ...

As stated above the easiest way to identify a fungal nail infection is when the nail becomes discoloured or thickened. It is rare for an nail infection to cause pain but in some cases, if left untreated, this can be the case. If a toenail is affected then it may be uncomfortable walking and wearing shoes may become painful. If the infection is in the fingernail then writing and using other such utensils may become problematic although these occurrences are rare.

If the infection is allowed to progress then other symptoms may develop. The nail can become crumbly and brittle, with pieces breaking off from the toe or finger completely. The skin around the nail area can also become painful and inflamed. Other symptoms that can develop to the surrounding skin include white or yellow patches on the nail-bed and scaly skin around the nail. To summarise, symptoms of a fungal nail infection may include:

  • White, yellow or brown discolouration of the nail
  • Thickening, scaliness and/or brittleness of the nail
  • The nail may become distorted in shape
  • There may be increased debris under the nail

What Is A Fungal Nail Infection

Fungal nail infections are a common problem that can affect any nail, but most often affects the toenails.

They’re caused by the growth of fungal spores that make their way between the toenail and the skin underneath the nail bed. The spores feed off the skin or the keratin in the nail.

The type of fungi responsible for athletes foot, another common foot condition that affects the skin mainly between the toes, can cause the infection to spread to the nails.

More rarely, fungal nail infections can be caused by other types of fungi, usually yeasts, which tend to attack nails that are already damaged because they are easier for the fungi to invade.

The Easy To Use Treatment Works In Two Phases

Phase 1: The treatment phase takes 4 weeks. You start with filing the nail surface once a week, disposing the used file to avoid contamination and applying the advance formula. Repeat the same steps in weeks 2,3 and 4.

Phase 2: This is the protection phase. You continue applying the liquid once a week for up to 9 months or when the discolouration has completely grown out.

Washing and drying your feet carefully. Always wash your hands after touching an infected nail.
Ensure you are treating any other fungal infections you may have, for example athletes foot.

Wear shoes that fit properly with enough room for the toes.

Keep your nails trimmed. Sterilise the tools used for pedicures by cleaning them thoroughly under hot water or using alcoholic wipes or liquid.

A person interested in trying a blend of essential oils can buy the oils online or from a health food store. Mix the oil with a carrier oil before applying the mixture to the affected nails.

Ozonized oils are oils infused with ozone gas. Examples of oils that are available in ozonized form include sunflower oil and olive oil.

According to , ozonized oils show positive effects similar to a traditional medication called terbinafine cream in treating one type of fungus. In this study, the researchers used rabbits to test the effectiveness of the treatment.

Another study carried out on 400 people tested how ozonized oils affected fungal infections. In this 2011 study , researchers used ozonized sunflower oil to treat toenail fungus.

Their results indicated that ozonized oils cured up to 90.5 percent of the total infections with only a 2.8 percent relapse rate after 1 year. The researchers concluded the ozonized sunflower oil works more effectively than ketoconazole cream, which is an antifungal medication.

Treatments For Fungal Nail Infections

Treatment isn’t always needed for a mild fungal nail infection because it’s unlikely to cause any further problems and you may feel it’s not worth treating.

Whether you decide to have treatment or not, you should still practise good foot hygiene to stop the infection getting worse or spreading to others.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you’re bothered by the appearance of the affected nail, or it’s causing problems such as pain and discomfort. They’ll probably recommend:

  • antifungal tablets tablets taken once or twice a day for several months
  • antifungal nail paints special paints applied directly to the nail over several months
  • nail softening kits where a paste is used to soften infected parts of the nail, before they’re removed with a scraping device

A procedure to remove the nail completely may be recommended in severe cases. Laser treatment, where a high-energy laser is used to destroy the fungus, is also an option. But this is only available privately and can be expensive.

You can reduce your risk of developing a fungal nail infection by:

Nail salon equipment can sometimes be the source of fungal nail infections. If you regularly visit a salon, make sure any equipment used is properly sterilised between uses.

How Do You Get A Fungal Nail Infection

Pin on Pain Relief And Acupuncture

Most fungal nail infections occur as a result of the fungi that cause athlete’s foot infecting the nails.

These fungi often live harmlessly on your skin, but they can sometimes multiply and lead to infections. The fungi prefer warm, dark and moist places like the feet.

You’re more likely to get a fungal nail infection if you:

  • don’t keep your feet clean and dry
  • wear shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty
  • walk around barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers, locker rooms and gyms
  • have damaged your nails
  • have a weakened immune system
  • have certain other health conditions, such as diabetes, psoriasis or peripheral arterial disease

Fungal nail infections can be spread to other people, so you should take steps to avoid this if you have an infection.

Verywell / Sabrina Jiang

Toenail fungus is a common fungal condition that often starts after a rash on the foot spreads to the nails. When mild, it looks like white and yellow spots growing under the nail beds. But if left untreated, the fungus can grow severely by hardening the nails and spreading to other toes.

The fungus often begins in the form of athlete’s foot between the toes or on the soles of the feet. At this stage, the fungal infection is easier to treat with over-the-counter medication. But Shari Lipner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine, told Verywell Health toenail fungus can be difficult to treat because of how slow the nails grow. The more severe the toenail fungus, the thicker the nail, and the more nails involved makes it that much harder to treat the nails even with effective therapies, she says.

Diagnosing the fungal infection early is key to make treatments effective. Dr. Lipner recommends visiting a board-certified dermatologist to properly treat the infection if it grows to be too severe.

Here are a few of the best over-the-counter toenail fungus treatments on the market.

The Importance Of Hygiene

When treating a fungal nail, always wash your hands after applying a treatment and remember to use a separate towel for your feet when youre drying them. Its a good idea to tell those close to you about your fungal nail infection so they can take precautions too. Dont share shoes or socks with them as it can be contagious.

Nail During Treatment For Fungal Nail Infection

The fungi that are killed with treatment remain in the nail until the nail grows out. Fresh, healthy nail growing from the base of the nail is a sign that treatment is working. After you finish a course of treatment, it will take several months for the old infected part of the nail to grow out and be clipped off. The non-infected fresh new nail continues growing forward. When it reaches the end of the finger or toe, the nail will often look normal again.

Fingernails grow faster than toenails, so it may appear they are quicker to get back to normal. It may take up to a year after starting treatment before toenails look completely normal again and six months for fingernails to look completely normal.

Consult a doctor if there does not seem to be any healthy new nail beginning to grow after a few weeks of treatment. However, the infection can still respond to treatment even after you finish a course of medication. This is because the antifungal medication stays in the nail for about nine months after you stop taking medication.

Fungal Nail Infection Symptoms

THE FASTEST WAY TO TREAT TOENAIL FUNGUS?!

Often the infection is just in one nail but several may be affected. It is usually painless. The nail may look thickened and discoloured . Commonly, this is all that occurs and it often causes no other symptoms. The main reason people see their doctor is because the appearance is unsightly.

Sometimes the infection becomes worse. White or yellow patches may appear where the nail has come away from the skin under the nail . Sometimes the whole nail comes away. The nail may become soft and crumble. Bits of nail may fall off. The skin next to the nail may be inflamed or scaly. If left untreated, the infection may eventually destroy the nail and the nail bed, and may become painful. Walking may become uncomfortable if a toenail is affected.

When To See A Doctor

In most cases, toenail fungus is considered a cosmetic problem. Still, it may cause serious complications for some people.

If you have diabetes, toenail fungus may lead to foot ulcers or other foot problems. According to a 2012 study, chronic toenail fungus is a significant risk factor for bacterial cellulitis of the leg.

If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, you shouldnt use home remedies for toenail fungus. Contact your doctor for the appropriate course of action.

Does Peeing On Your Feet Get Rid Of Toenail Fungus

Because of the fact that human urine contains urea, some say that urinating on your feet can treat fungal nail diseases such as athlete’s foot and jock itch.

However, the amount of urea in the urine is not large enough to kill the fungal nail disease.

Therefore, it can be said that peeing on your feet cannot get rid of toenail fungus. If you are looking for a way to treat your toenail fungus, consider using some ointment, antifungal creams, or lotions.

You can also try oral medications to treat toenail fungus.

What Special Precautions Should Be Taken Afterwards

It is advised that patients bring a fresh pair of socks/footwear to wear after the procedure. Otherwise no special precautions are needed immediately after the treatment. In order to reduce the chance of re-infection it is important that the nails and surrounding skin are treated with regular applications of antifungal cream and alcohol gel afterwards and that shoes should also be disinfected.
