Hello,
I will be installing 3/4 cedar siding this weekend .
THis will be my first time, so I would love a few pointers to get me on the right path.
A few questions I have
1) Whats the reccomended nail? I know that it needs to penetrate 1 1/2 into the stud. I will be needing 3 1/2 nails to do so. My local hardware store does not sell 3 1/2 ring shanked so will I be ok with regular 3 1/2 siding nails?
2) Is hot dipped galvanized the way to go?
3) Is it best to avoid nail guns ?
4) If you have any other general tips for me that would be great!

For best results use splitless siding nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. For greater holding power, nails with ring threaded or spiral threaded shanks are recommended. Nails with textured heads can be used to reduce glossy spots at the nails when finishing .
Nails should be driven with care. Heavy nailing distorts the wood and may cause splitting. At mitered corners, near edges and near ends, nail holes may need to be pre-drilled to avoid splitting.The size of the nails to use depends on the type and thickness of siding. Good building practice is to use nails long enough to go through underlying materials, such as sheathing and insulation, and penetrate at least 1-1/4 . See table below for recommended nail lengths for various thicknesses of siding.Siding should be fastened to each stud or furring strip with nails spaced at a maximum of 24 on center, nail placement depends on the siding pattern and width. The key is to fasten the siding securely without preventing it from moving in response to the moisture content of the air. In general, each piece of siding must be nailed independently.

What’s The Best Fastener For Cedar Decking
When it comes to decking applications, most people are going to use screws, ring shank nails, or spiral shank nails. With screws, theres less danger of the coating coming off when using the type with a head where the screw bit is not going to walk out of it.;

Rigid foam sheathing has an insulation value superior to that of traditional lumber and plywood sheathings. However, it has little or no nail holding power and using rigid foam sheathing as a nailing base for cedar siding is not recommended. Cedar Siding: Nails Or Screws
the 1/2 x 10 cedar siding on my house is quite loose from years of neglect . i think the big reason much of it has;wriggled loose;is that many of the nails never sank into anything other than the sheathing . as im prepping for painting, im going through all of the loose pieces and wanting, of course, to fasten them securely to the house. i was told by a supposedly reliable source that i should remove all the nails and fasten with screws instead.; it was recommended that i put a 1/4 lag into the siding for the screw head, so as not to crack the thin and old siding. ive been doing some research on siding repairs and havent come across one reference to using screws, so im wondering if there is a very good reason NOT to use screws, other than possibly cost. thanks.
You could make repairs like that using 1-1/4″ stainless steel trim head screws. Remove the nails if possible and try putting the screws in the same holes. Seat the screws so that the head are just flush with the wood, or very slightly recessed, not much. You may find that the nail hole prevents the siding from splitting, and that the threads grab into the plywood well enough to pull the siding down.
