How To Remove Your Acrylics Or Gels At Home

Yes, removing your acrylic nails is tedious. But youve probably got some time on your hands.

    By Crystal Martin

For many of us, at-home gel removal is unexplored territory. To help you navigate the task, we consulted two nail artists, Brittney Boyce and Lisa Logan, for advice. Here, the right way to remove the four most common types of long-lasting manicure soft gels, hard gels, acrylics and dip powder nails quickly and safely.

    First, a few universal tips:

    • Work on one hand at a time. Believe it or not, its efficient. For example, in acrylic removal, youll soak then file off the product. In the time youre filing one hand, the acrylic on the other will have rehardened, making it impossible to file.

    • Second, manicure removal is generally drying to nails. Treat them well after youre done. Rehydrate them with an oil or lotion and buff the surface to a smooth shine.

    • Finally, apply a nail strengthener, like Nails. Inc Gel Rehab, $15, a moisturizing base coat that protects against breakage.

Do Gel Manis Damage Your Nails

Not when they’re done correctly! “Gel manicures are not bad for your nails when professionally done,” Duguay-Gordon says. “It can be damaging though, without proper nail prep, application and removal.” A common misconception is that gel manis damage your nails when in reality, the removal process is usually the most harmful.

Avoid picking the gel off yourself , and if you’re getting your nails done at the salon, be sure your nail technician isn’t filing, buffing them down, or using a drill.

Many people worry about getting gels because they fear their nails won’t be able to “breathe,” but Duguay-Gordon assures that nails don’t breath, as they’re dead to begin with. The whole idea is a myth, but it is kind of cute to imagine your little nails with micro-nostrils.

File The Shine Off Your Gel Polish

You know that clear, glossy top coat you get at the end of your gel manicure to seal in your polish? It’s time for that to go. “Removing the top coat of your manicure will help accelerate the removal time,” says Nunez. “Youre essentially giving your remover a head start and one less coat to break down during the soak off time.”

Use a nail file to buff away the surface layer of manicure. When you think you’ve removed the last of your top coat, place your hand under a light and inspect your nails. Any remaining shiny patches will reveal where you still need to file. But heads up: If you start seeing spots of natural nail, you’ve gone too far. “You still want to see some color on the nails before you soak, to ensure you are protecting the integrity of your natural nails,” says Nunez.

Youre Removing An Old Gel Manicure Without Professional Help

Once a gel manicure is on its last leg, you may be tempted to remove it yourself, but experts advise against it. The safest way to remove gel polish is by a professional, says Harpring.

If you absolutely cant make it to the salon for removal, she advises you first gently file the top of the polish to remove the shine, which allows the acetone to penetrate and dissolve the gel easier. Next, soak cotton balls in acetone , apply a cotton ball to each nail, and wrap it in tin foil. Leave the wraps on for 10 to 15 minutes, and then, using a wooden cuticle pusher, gently push the gel off of the nail plates. To finish, lightly buff the surface of the nail with a buffing tool, and apply oil to your nails and cuticles to rehydrate.

Try To Restrict Your Exposure To The Light

A 2016 research from the American Academy of Dermatology disclosed that gel manicures may not be a safe alternative for people who are very sensitive to UV light. The UV dosage that you get throughout a gel manicure is short, yet its intense, Dr. Adigun claimed in the research. In time, this extreme direct exposure can add up to trigger skin damages.

An additional issue is the increase in appeal of LED nail lamps, Dr. Adigun notes of her research study on the safety and security of gel manicures. LED lamps have become preferred as much for their faster treating times as the idea that theyre much safer than UV lights, but Dr. Adigun urges this is not the situation. Although many individuals erroneously believe these lights do not make use of UVA to cure, they use higher intensities of UVA wavelengths to achieve the much shorter treating times. This higher strength of UVA irradiance suggests that it calls for much less time for these lights to possibly damage the skin, she explains.

Instead, Dr. Adigun recommends bringing along your pair of YouVeeShield handwear covers to safeguard your hands against UVA radiation . It is the most protective material because it protects the entire digits and also wrist, Dr. Adigun states.

The cost of a gel manicure varies widely between cities, states, and nail techs. In major cities like LA and New York City, a gel manicure can cost anywhere from $30 to $50+. In general, expect gel polish to cost about $10 to $15 more than your regular manicure. Keep in mind that you’ll also have to pay for gel removal if you decide you don’t want to take it off at home.

Soak Cottonballs In Nail Polish Remover

While acetone-free nail polish removers may work fine for regular polish, you should probably stick to the strong stuff when removing gel manicures. “I highly recommend an acetone-based remover because it will break down the product quicker,” says Nunez.

Fill a small dish with nail polish remover and soak 10 cotton balls . Cotton balls are also smaller and better fit your nail, which means less harsh acetone on your cuticles.

How to take gel nails off at home

Since gel nail polish can be worn for weeks on end without even the tiniest chip, stretching the life of your manicure is tempting. However, Hadley suggests removing a gel manicure after two to three weeks maximum to avoid damaging nail beds and cuticles. Harpring agrees, adding that overextending gel manicures can not only lead to weakened nails, but also introduce potentially harmful bacteria. It is important to remember that once the gel begins to lift, it does allow for moisture to get under the gel and possibly lead to bacterial growth, explains Harpring.

After removing the unsightly turmeric stains on your gel nails, you might want to brighten them. Simply follow these steps.

    • Prepare a soaking solution by mixing a cup of water with juice from half a lemon and a tablespoon of baking soda. Stir the solution to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Soak your nails for 15-20 minutes and rinse with fresh water.
    • Buff the top layer of the gel manicure to get rid of the discolored layer. Utilize a high-grit buffer. Gently rub the buffer over the surface of the gel until the grimy layer disappears. At this point, you will see the original color of your gel nails return.
