Beauty Lookshow To Safely Remove Acrylic Nails At Home

An easy way to save some time and some coins.

Theres no denying that trying creative and fun nail designs is one of our favorite beauty indulgences, but when youre doing it with acrylic nails there can be some challenges. Despite the entry of gel nails, dip powder and Polygel into the nail arena, we still love acrylics for their solid staying power. But for that same reason, theyre not exactly the easiest to remove on your own once youre ready for your next beauty look . You definitely cant just rip them off youll regret it if you try! And trying to slip a Metrocard or thin plastic sheet under the acrylic to pop it off is an absolute no-no.

You can head to the salon and have a nail technician remove your acrylics then redo your nails for you. But if the 2020 pandemic has taught us anything, we know that going to the salon or that favorite nail tech isnt always an option. Weve had to take matters into our own hands literally.

While learning how to remove acrylic nails may seem intimidating, its actually quite simple. Below, were sharing a few of our favorite methods for at-home acrylic nail removal, including how to remove acrylic nails without acetone.

Stage One Prepare Your Nails

The first stage is to prep the nail this is one of the most important stages as it not only makes the acrylic application better and keeps your natural nails in better condition and helps avoid any damage. Make sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water so that your hands are clean ready for when you apply the acrylic.

If you have long nails, begin by cutting them down, you want to cut them so that they are just under the tip of your finger. Cutting your nails down will stop them from getting too long underneath the acrylic, and it makes them more hygienic.

You now need to file and shape your nails so that they are a smooth surface and the shape of your nail suits the shape of acrylic you are going for. The shaping doesnt need to be perfect however, if you roughly shape it to match, the final finish will look cleaner and more natural.

Once you have filed and shaped your nails, use a nail file with a 240 grit on your natural nail bed to remove the shine. Removing the shine will help the acrylic and nail tip to adhere better to the nail and make them last longer. When filing the nail bed, file in the direction of nail growth as filing side to side can damage the nail plate layers and cause weakening of the nails.

Buying Acrylic Nail Supplies

Acrylic nails step by step
  • 1Consider an acrylic nail kit. If this is your first time doing your own acrylic nails, you may want to start with a kit. Kits contain everything you need to get started and come with detailed instructions to help you achieve the look you want. Make sure you read the ingredients so the monomer does NOT contain MMA. MMA is a dental acrylic and is too hard for the natural nail.XResearch source Look for EMA – Ethyl Methacrylate, that is what you want on your nails. Look for brands professional uses or google for something a lot of people recommend.
  • 2 For greater control over the appearance of your acrylics, you may want to buy the supplies separately. This way you’ll also be prepared when it’s time to reapply acrylic after your nails grow out. Go to a beauty supply store and buy the following supplies:
  • Acrylic nail tips and nail tip glue. The tips are usually quite long, which allows you to trim and file them down to the shape and size you want.
  • Acrylic nail clippers and files. Regular clippers and files aren’t as effective on acrylic nails.180, 240, 1000 & 4000 grit should be enough. You might need an even coarser file than the 180 grit if the end result is very clumpy.
  • Acrylic liquid and acrylic powder. These substances are mixed together to create acrylic nails. As said before, stay away from MMA monomers, go for the EMA .
  • Acrylic bowl and acrylic brush. You need these supplies to mix up the acrylic and apply it. Somewhere between size #8-12 might be a good choice.

How To Fill In Acrylic Nails Without Acrylic

Doing an infill with acrylic is the best way to do it. That is clean, safe and balances the fake nails on your natural ones perfectly.

However, for various reasons such as lack of time or budget to visit a salon or reluctance of doing infill at home, you may try to fill in acrylic nails without using acrylic.

The initial steps are similar to do an acrylic infill :

    • Take off the old nail paint using non-acetone nail polish remover or using an electric nail kit.
    • Then, buff the excess acrylic to reduce the lifting of acrylic nail towards the bottom and make it blend with your natural nail. Do not over buff the acrylic that there is hardly any left on the nail.
    • Apply dehydrator to eliminate any excess oil or moisture left on the nail bed. Top it up with few coats of primer to prevent stains and any chemical reactions with nail paint.
    • Now, just apply the nail paint over the entire nail including the natural nail gap and the acrylic nail surface itself.
    • Finish with a top coat. If you neatly buffed the acrylic to blend it with natural nail toward the base, nail lifting should be hardly visible.

Thats how you can easily disguise grown out nails without a full blown acrylic fill in.

The below video explains on how you can fill nails without acrylic

Warning: You should fill acrylic nails without acrylic by buffing and repainting the entire nail only as a temporary measure or if the outgrown nail gap is minute.

Coat Your Nails With The Acrylic Mixture

Dip your acrylic brush into your bowl of monomer, tap some on the side so as to not over-saturate your brush, and dip into your clear powder. This process will create the perfect bead of acrylicas opposed to a drippy or dry onewhich you can then apply to the nail. Start just above your cuticle, and extend the mixture all the way to the end of your acrylic tip. When applying, be sure to smooth out to the edges of your nails and wipe your brush off on a paper towel between each stroke so as to avoid clumps.

Some manicurists recommend splitting the nail up into three sections, using a small bead of acrylic for the free edge, one for the apex of the nail , and one for the cuticle to the natural nail.

Repeat this process on each nail to create a smooth base. Follow up with the same process using the acrylic powder color of your choice. If you want the look of a shiny topcoat, finish with a thin encapsulation layer of acrylic mixture. Keyword: Thin. You dont want to add loads of bulk to your nail.

What Is Monomer Liquid Made Of

Liquid monomer is comprised of acrylic monomers, typically ethyl methacrylate cross-linking monomers, which are chemicals such as dimethacrylate or trimethacrylate added to strengthen the formula catalysts to speed up the chemical reaction and inhibitors, which are preservatives that prevent the monomer from curing

Wet Bead Dry Bead Or Medium Bead

    DIY Acrylic Nail Designs

The next stage involves the difference between a Wet Bead, a Dry Bead, and a Medium Bead with a perfect Monomer to powder ratio.

This is essentially how much is applied to your Nail Brush Bead.

So lets start with a Wet Bead.

When you pick up a Bead you dip your brush in your Monomer and you want to push it down and get rid of all the bubbles.

This is called burping your brush and what this does is prevent bubbles in your acrylic when you apply it.

So then you wipe off the excess Monomer and all your liquid is going to be at the top of the brush. You want to turn that and dip it into your powder.

This is what a Wet Bead looks like:

A Wet Bead is going to spread and what these are primarily used for is around the Cuticle area when you want it to really sync with your natural nail.

Now Im going to show you a Dry Bead

Now with a Dry Bead, you see its harder to get the Bead off of the brush and thats not what you want to use.

If you ever see your Bead doing this go ahead and wipe it off on your towel and start over.

You are in control of your acrylic application so if its not looking the way you want it to just wipe it off and start over.

Now Im going to show you a Medium Bead and its perfect liquid to powder ratio and you can see how it has a definite border around the Bead and this is perfect for building your acrylic foundation.

Now that you know the differences between the Beads lets put it into practice. Im going to be showing you a three Bead application.

Yes Gel Extensions Are Better Than Regular Acrylic

What makes gel extensions the superior in this situation is that its not only made of gel for long-wear and durability, but it doesnt require any harsh chemicals. There are plenty of benefits, including no damage to your natural nails, the tips are lightweight, there are no fumes, strong odors, and heavy filing. When my clients remove their gel extensions, their natural nails are longer and stronger, Seney adds. When you get acrylic tips, the removal process involves drilling, soaking, and filing. With gel extensions, you remove them by simply soaking your nails in acetone, and the gel tips dissolve. You dont have to worry about gel extensions preventing you from doing your everyday tasks, either. The gel tips are pretty strong, so you can do normal daily things without being worried your nail will pop off or lift. I tell my clients try not to touch too much-rubbing alcohol or acetone, Seney adds, as alcohol and acetone can weaken the gel tip.

Size & Apply Your Acrylic Nails Using Acrylic Nail Glue

Depending on the kit you get, youll have a variety of different acrylic tip sizes, widths, and lengths to choose fromjust as you would with press-on nails. Because of this, you need to go through the sizes to find the ones that best fit your tips. If there are no perfect fits, use your nail file to gently file them to the correct width.

According to nail expert Evelyn Lim, tips used for acrylic application have an indent on the inside of the tipwhich is approximately 2-3 mm at most and the free edge of your natural nail should fit right underneath. “It is best to trim the natural nail short prior to application,” she advises. Once youve selected your acrylic tips, apply them one at a time with a dot of acrylic nail glue. You want the bottom edge of the acrylic tip to be centered about one-third of the way down your nail so that it will remain sturdy as your nails begin to grow out. Apply pressure to the nail for five to 10 seconds to ensure that its secure and move on to the next tip until all 10 are complete.

Apply Your Acrylic Nails Using Acrylic Nail Glue

This step will be different from person to person, and it depends on what type of kit you get. There are many acrylic tip sizes, widths, and lengths to select. So you have to find the best fit acrylic nails for you. If you cant find perfect fits, you have to file them to fit your nails.

Once all done, take a nail and apply them with an acrylic nail glue one at a time.

Keep the end of the tip in the centre and one-third of the way down to your nail. This will make them remain strong as your nails begin to grow. Apply a small amount of pressure to the nail for 5-10 seconds to check everything is OK. If all is good, move on to the next tip.
