- If band is very loose your orthodontist may be able to talk you through removal of the band and trimming of the wire depending upon your stage of treatment.
- It may also be also be the case your orthodontist advises you to leave the band in place. If this occurs please ensure you adhere to good oral hygiene and a low sugar diet to prevent decay under the band and around your tooth.
Ulcers Or Sores Inside Your Mouth
Sometimes your gums or mouth may be irritated by contact with your braces in certain cases, this irritation causes small sores or ulcers. While they can be uncomfortable, they are normal and will go away quickly.
Avoid touching them with your fingers. Cover the irritating bracket or wire with wax, and take Tylenol or Advil if you feel pain. They will fade quickly as your mouth heals.

Taking Care Of Your Teeth And Appliances
Here are some things to keep in mind while youre at home. Even though the rest of your routine may have changed, its important to maintain all of your great oral hygiene habits and keep taking care of your appliances.
Invisalign:
- Wear aligners as directed by Dr. Willett.
- If you dont have the next aligner in the series, continue to wear the previous aligner for 15-18 hours a day until our office reopens.
- If you lose or break an aligner, use the previous one in the series.
- Continue to use any other equipment as instructed by your orthodontist.
- If you run out of aligners, dont stop wearing them! Visit our virtual visits page and provide the necessary information so we can determine your next steps.
Braces:
- Wear elastics, as directed by Dr. Willett. If you run out, let us know, and well mail you more.
- If you have any wires sticking out, apply orthodontic wax until you can come into the office. You may also try trimming the wire with a pair of nail clippers or small scissors.
- If you have a loose bracket, let us know, and well fix it at your next in-office appointment. We can also send you a video about how to remove the bracket from the wire using tweezers.
- Avoid any and all foods that can damage your braces. This means sticky and crunchy foods, as well as anything else you would consider to be too hard for braces to handle. This will help prevent any emergencies, and keep us all safe at home!
- And of course, keep your braces clean and free of food debris or plaque!

If you remove braces at home, your teeth will lose the direction they were supposed to take and will be free to move in whatever direction they please. Emergencies Related To Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, appliances might be broken or bent during your orthodontic care. If there are any disturbances, such as loose bands, loose brackets, broken or poking wires, please call our office. In the meantime, here are some helpful hints to remedy some of the problems you may encounter.
- If a tie wire is irritating your mouth, cover it with wax or tuck it under the arch wire with a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
- A loose band or bracket can generally be left in place until seen in our office. Call The Silver Spring Orthodontist when you notice a loose band or bracket. We will schedule you to reattach the loose appliance if indicated.
- A broken or poking archwire can often be bent in with a pencil eraser or cut with nail clippers. Call our office if you do not feel the problem has been resolved properly.

Major Facial Trauma Or Swelling
If you have suffered major facial trauma, go to the emergency room immediately or contact your dentist. The first priority is to ensure there is no damage to the jaw joint, or any broken bones in the face. If your braces were broken in the event, please call the office so we can schedule an appointment to assess the damage.

Broken Or Loose Brackets
Hard foods are the leading cause of loose brackets. During the summer, we all tend to be lax with our everyday routines. However, out of town is not the time to take a chance breaking a bracket by not following the restricted diet. If a bracket does come loose from a tooth, remove the bracket with a pair of disinfected tweezers if you can and continue on your merry way. Dont forget to contact us when you return so we can schedule an appt to replace the bracket. It is challenging to repair an emergency during your regular appointment when there isnt sufficient time scheduled to repair.
How To Fix Braces Wire At Home
Occasionally, the archwire extends in the back or may come right out of the bracket when chewing gum, hard candy, and sticky foods. Use a pencil eraser or something soft to push the wire flat against your teeth. Add wax or sugarless gum to the end of the wire if needed to prevent irritation. If the braces wire breaks, you can clip the wire with a pair of nail clippers, flush to the next anchored bracket just remember to disinfect the clippers or wire cutters first with rubbing alcohol, if handy, or use the flame on a lighter to kill the germs. Once the wire is clipped, make sure to avoid swallowing the clipped piece of wire.

Fixing A Protruding Wire
With these tips, you can temporarily fix the protruding wire and provide yourself with relief from the discomfort and irritation until you can visit King Orthodontics for a permanent solution. When fixing a protruding wire, consider these methods:
Orthodontic Wax- This can be placed on the protruding wire to protect your mouth from further irritation. Be sure to brush your teeth before application and use a pea-sized amount of wax to cover the wire.
Tweezers- If an archwire has slipped out of your molar bracket, you may be able to use tweezers to carefully re-insert the archwire. Once youve bent the wire back, use dental wax to keep the wire in place until you can visit your orthodontist. They can also be used to bend a ligature wire back into place. Be sure to clean the tweezers thoroughly before using them.
Pencil Eraser- Using a clean pencil eraser, you can gently bend the wire back to a more comfortable shape. This method may not work for archwires but is useful for pushing in ligature wires on your brackets.
Nail clippers and wires- This is an option that is only recommended as a last resort. To clip the wire, you can pull back your cheek, dry the area, and with the help of an adult, carefully clip the protruding wire. After clipping the wire, be sure to cover it with wax to hold it in place.
