Nail Technician License Renewal In Florida

Continuing education required

All nail technician licenses in Florida must be renewed every two years. The deadline for renewing your license is October 31st, and you’ll be placed into one of two groups: those who renew their license in even years and those who renew in odd years. To renew your license, you must complete ten hours of continuing education and pay a $45 fee. However, for 2019 and 2020 renewals, the Board of Cosmetology has issued a “renewal holiday” and waived all feeskeep an eye on the board’s website for updates.

If you don’t renew your nail specialist license in time, it becomes inactive until you do so, and you may not work as a nail technician during that time. After two consecutive missed licensure cycles, a license becomes null and void. Once considered null and void, your license will not be reinstated unless you can prove to the department that the failure to renew was due to illness or economic hardship. If you can do that, you may renew your license once you meet the following conditions:

  • Complete a four-hour board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course
  • Pay a $75 fee
  • Give an explanation of the illness or economic hardship that delayed renewal

How Many Hours Will You Need

In Florida you will have to enrol at a beauty college and have at least 240 hours of intensive education on polishing, buffing, nail art, anatomy of hands, manicures, pedicures, tints, colours and extensions and so on. You may be able to get the necessary hours through an online nail school as well. For ideas on how to finance your education check here.

However, for you to get a letter of completion, there is a final exam that you need to take and score at least 75% on. Getting a letter of completion means that youve completed the education part of your program. You still need to submit an Application for Initial License Based on Florida Education through an online portal at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. This approval will enable you to perform nail tech services to clients, because you will have passed both the education and the regulatory requirements.

While awaiting your approval you can be a nail specialist in a licensed beauty salon in Florida, but you need to be under the supervision of a registered nail specialist. This is to ensure that youve clearly mastered all the skills taught in class and you are able to apply them well.

    High School Salon Offers Career

Aeriana Dunham leaned back in a salon chair, tilting her head from side to side, modeling her freshly curled locks in a short video for friends.

A few chairs down, a stylist tried to convince her client to trim enough hair to cut off the split ends. Around the corner, another client sat under a dryer, and in the room behind her, a pedicure was underway.

Though the salon is full service, all the work is done by teenage students working toward earning their cosmetology licenses by the time they graduate from high school if not sooner.

The Cosmetology Academy at Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology has about 200 students enrolled, with more on a waiting list. The public high school is home to nine academies, including culinary, automotive and aviation.

Students in the cosmetology academy work toward the 1,200 school hours and the understanding to pass the Florida Board of Cosmetology exam, often before they enter their senior year of high school.

Its different, said Dunham, 17, a junior who wants to offer hair braiding and extensions after graduation. Its not like a normal school.

This is a hands-on industry, said Antionette Rowell, the head cosmetology instructor. She said if a student really gets involved, he or she can graduate with 1,700 hours of experience.

They get this education that could have the same outcome for free, Rowell said. She said area cosmetology programs start at more than $10,000.
