Turfgrass Diseases: Red Thread

Red Thread Lawn Disease | Treating Lawn Fungus

This disease is caused by the fungus Laetisaria fuciformis, and during rainy periods in late spring and early summer, it is one of the most common lawn diseases in Pennsylvania. Red thread is usually associated with perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass lawns that do not receive adequate amounts of nitrogen fertilizer.

How To Spot Fungal Diseases In Your Lawn

From highly-obvious spots, rings, threads to dead-looking patches brown patches, fungal diseases can take many forms. Examine your grass for signs of dampness, squishy roots and stems or fine white threads in your soil.

Others signs your lawn may have a fungal disease include:

  • A wet-looking, slimy or greasy-looking lawn
  • Patches or rings, usually white, yellow, or brown, that grow in diameter.
  • Discolouration, frayed or distorted-looking blades of grass.
  • Spots on the stems or blades of your lawn, often gray, black, red or orange.
  • Powdery or threadlike coatings around and on grass blades

Fact: Mowing your grass too low can encourage fungal diseases.

How To Treat Red Thread Disease

One of the causes of red thread, and a contributor to its severity, is poor, under-nourished turf, so your first line of defense is to give your grass regular care. If red thread disease continues to be a problem in your lawn, treat it with a fungicide. Like other lawn diseases, red thread will likely leave behind some damaged areas that may need to be patched. The easiest solution is to use a three-in-one seed repair once you have the disease under control.

How Can I Manage Red Thread In My Lawn

Were in the middle of June, and red thread is present on many lawns. This disease is formed by a fungus that develops a weblike, pale reddish mycelium that surrounds and connects to the leaf blades. In the early morning, before the lawn dries out, you can see small reddish hair on the tips of turf.

Red thread survives unfavorable periods on infected leaves or within thatch, and are most severe on lawns that have a high mix of perennial ryegrass. These threads survive highs of 89 degrees to lows of minus 4 degrees. But the optimum range is between 60 to 75 degrees. Typically, when temperatures consistently reach 75 degrees, the fungus growth rate decreases dramatically and it ceases to grow at 85 degrees.

Over the past month, weve seen wild swings in weather from cool to hot, from dry to rainy. Over Memorial Day weekend, many areas experienced nearly 3 inches of rain in below average temperatures. Just days later, the same areas were hit with 4 days straight of 90 degree weather, no rain, and high humidity. These conditions spawnedif not contributed tothe development of red thread.

While unsightly, Ive never once seen red thread permanently damage healthy, established turf. Its a stress disease, which means it impacts the bladenever the crown or root system.

How To Get Rid Of Red Thread Permanently

The best way of permanently getting rid of red thread is to eliminate the conditions that allowed it to develop in the first place. Maintain your lawn well fed all year round, using the right formulation for each season. The So& Mo Performance Liquid Lawn Feed delivers a 12 month plan that takes into consideration periods of growth to ensure your lawn gets the right treatment through the year.

It is also highly important that you maintain good soil condition. Aim to aerate and scarify your lawn at least once a year. By removing thatch, youll allow more air and nutrients to penetrate the soil effectively. But upon close inspection it is easy to see the red, thread like material that seems to grow out of the top of grass while the blades themselves remain intact.

Mycelium, a pink fluffy material, can be sometimes be found on the bottom of the infected grass blades.

How Do You Get Rid Of Red Thread Lawn Disease

. Consequently, how do you get rid of red thread?

The basic treatment for red thread is to fertilize the lawn with the proper amount of nitrogen as part of an ongoing feeding program. Nitrogen applied to the lawn in the fall will nourish the re-emerging turf in the spring, but much of that nitrogen will be gone by late spring.

Likewise, how do you treat red thread lawn disease? Treatment. Feeding the lawn with a nitrogen based fertilizer will help the grass recover and help prevent future attacks. Red Thread can be treated using a fungicide that contains benomyl or carbendazim.

Also question is, will red thread go away?

Red thread will often go away on its own if the conditions dry out and it stays warm. However, this can take a while and if you do not keep a close on eye on your lawn, other diseases can infect your grass.

Why does my lawn get red thread?

Red thread is a common cause of patches of dead grass on lawns during wet summers and in autumn. It is caused by the fungus Laetisaria fuciformis. Red thread will rarely kill the grass completely, and the patches will recover with appropriate remedial action.

What Causes Red Thread

The main cause of red thread in the lawn is low nitrogen level, which attracts the fungus to attack the soil and thrive. There are other causes of red thread as well. Lets talk about them in detail.

  • Lawn Nutrition as low nutrient soil is unhealthy soil, which attracts fungus and other diseases in the lawn. And the red thread is one of the fungi which attracts a low nitrogen lawn in the cool and wet season. To ensure that your lawn doesnt get red thread, fertilize your lawn every six months with a slow-release fertilizer.
  • Blunt Mower Blades if your mower has a blunt blade, then it can cause some uneven cut to the grass tips. The uneven cuts can make a wound to the plant and can attract fungus-like a red thread. Keep the lawnmower blade sharp to make clean cuts to the grass.
  • Lawn Thatch thatch in the lawn is another cause that can cause red thread in the lawn. The thatch can cause red thread in two ways, the first is that it prevents air and other essential nutrients to penetrate the soil effectively which makes the soil undernourished and unhealthy for the soil which the red thread fungus loves. The other way that thatch causes red thread is because red thread fungus spreads through the thatch, which means thatch helps the red thread to get into the lawn. Dethatch the lawn every two years to make sure you prevent any disease in the lawn.

Will Red Thread Go Away On Its Own

In the right conditions, red thread can go away on its own over time. However, since red thread is often a sign of a nutrient deficiency within your soil, the issue can easily be solved by applying a nitrogen-rich feed to the affected area. Since red thread does not affect the roots of the lawn, a good fertiliser will reinforce your grass, and allow it to outgrow the damage done by the disease.

Lawn Fungus Treatments For Dollar Spots

A patch of red thread fungus on a lawn

Dollar spots are small circular patches in the lawn that can get up to a few inches in diameter. This is a grass disease that is the result of a fungal infection. The fungus tends to thrive in lawns that are undernourished and areas where the air is moist but the soil is dry.

The first step in preventing dollar spots is to make sure you are providing your lawn with enough nitrogen. Along with that, you want to water your lawn deeply a few times a week. You may also want to consider aerating your lawn to help water and nutrients reach roots.

Grass diseases can be very difficult to get under control once they are established in your lawn. That is why you should focus on prevention. Develop a lawn care plan based on the type of grass you have and the conditions in your yard. Your lawn wont be as vulnerable if you are mowing your lawn to the correct height, providing the right amount of water and using the right fertilizer.

What Causes Dollar Spot

Red Thread Problems & Treatment | Greensleeves Lawn Treatment Experts

Dollar spot fungus occurs in high humidity, especially if there is a restricted airflow to the grass.

The fungus itself, schlerotinia homeocarpa, comes from the earth and is most prevalent from early spring right through to the backend of fall when daytime temperatures reach between 59-86°F , and the nights are cool.

The reason the temperature range for infection is so wide is that different biotypes of dollar spot are more notorious at different temperatures.

Turfs with a moist canopy and dry soil are the most susceptible to infection. Low nitrogen fertility in the earth is another reason your lawn might develop a dollar spot problem.

Dollar spot can be exacerbated greatly if areas of your lawn are covered, preventing sunlight and air from drying the buildups of dew on the blades. This excess moisture combined with the ambient humidity provides the perfect catalyst for fungal growth.

Not all grass types are equally at risk from dollar spot. Those particularly susceptible include bents, fine fescues, and annual meadow grass. If you have any of these grasses on your land, you should keep a close eye on them during the humid months.

The good news is that dollar spot doesnt have its own reproductive process or autonomy. This means that it cant spread on its own.

It requires mechanical help, by which we mean it must be physically moved from place to place through the dissemination of already infected plant matter.

  • Red Thread Disease Treatment

Prevention is always better than a cure, so the best approach to managing Red Thread is to ensure that your grass is in good health, and to avoid the stress triggers that promote fungal growth.

However, if Red Thread Disease has taken hold of your lawn, you can treat it with a fungicide. Following the instructions on the label, a fungicide will kill any active fungal spores, and help prevent further spreading of infection.

Once treated, you should address any nutrition or water-logging issues, to avoid a recurrence. If the area is particularly shady, consider trimming back any overhanging branches or foliage to improve sunlight and air movement.

You should also oversow any bare patches with appropriate grass seed.

*FRAC is an abbreviation for Fungicide Resistance Action Committee. The FRAC code/resistance group system consists of numbers indicating classes or groups of fungicides based on mode of action, and letters that refer to broad classifications of fungicides . Due to the risk of fungicide resistance, turf managers should avoid excessive use of fungicides within the same FRAC code/resistance group and alternate products among different FRAC codes/resistance groups.

**Plant mobility classification refers to a fungicides ability to penetrate plant surfaces or remain on plant leaf or stem surfaces without penetration. Fungicides that penetrate plant surfaces and are translocated mostly upwards through plant xylem tissues are called acropetal penetrants . Fungicides that enter plant cuticles or move limited distances in internal plant spaces, but do not translocate through vascular tissues are called local penetrants. Contact fungicides do not penetrate plant surfaces and only inhibit fungal pathogens residing on leaf and stem surfaces.

    How To Treat Your Lawn

    Red thread fungus (laetisaria fuciformis)

Since you cant control the weather or remove the pathogen one cell at a time, the best solution in the fight against red thread is to fertilize your lawn and replace the nitrogen thats been lost from springtime growth. If you didnt spread a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in the fall, then treat your lawn in early spring or as soon as you suspect you have a fungal growth. Its important to point out that treating this type of fungus can take several years of fall treatments to prevent red thread from returning in the spring.

If the growth of red thread in your lawn is severe, chemical fungicides can also be used, but these are generally avoided in residential lawns to avoid harmful chemical reactions in children and pets.

Dont let red thread or any other springtime fungi take over your lawn this spring. Be ready by letting the team at Green Acres Landscape fertilize and treat your lawn in early spring. To schedule your lawn inspection or your annual spring appointment, call us today at . We proudly serve residents and commercial properties throughout Marion County, OR, and we look forward to treating your lawn this spring.
