What Can I Use To Remove Gel Nail Polish

Youre Getting Gel Manicures Back

How to remove Gel Nail Polish from Toes

Since removing and applying gel nail polish can cause a lot of wear and tear on your nails, you should space out your manicures. By getting gel nails every two weeks consistently, the nail plate gets extremely suffocated, explains Hadley. This can lead to nail dehydration and eventually breakage, so make sure to give your nails downtime between gels. Its important to have a professional nail technician assess your nail health between applications to determine if your nails could use a sabbatical from polishes, explains Harpring.

Why Not Use Acetone

It is true that acetone is a popular and powerful chemical for removing polish. It is definitely effective, but it is also very harsh. It can remove natural oils from your skin and make your skin and nails look very white. In other words, using acetone will dry out your skin. It is, therefore, important to know the other methods of gel polish removal that do not use acetone. However, it is worth pointing out that whether you use acetone or a non-acetone method to get rid of nail polish or gel nails, you should always moisturize your hands afterwards.

Is Gel Base The Same As Dip Base

The gel base coat is one of the most sought-after products by professional manicurists, pedicurists and nail technicians around the world. Why? Because it gives your nails a rich and glossy look. With a gel base coat on your nails, you can get away from those false nails that come loose after some time. But before we go into details, let us understand what gel base coat is all about.

The two major components that make up gel base are the wax and oil base. It is the oil base that makes the nail glossy and protects it from chipping, cracking, breaking, peeling, breaking and fading.

The other major component is a gel liquid that is used to coat the nails, it contains moisturizers that seal the cuticle and keep the nails healthy. The best thing about these gel liquids is that they dont dry out as quickly as the powder liquids or oil-based manicure creams do.

Filing Off The Nail Gels

How to Remove Gel Polish Without Acetone
  • 1Trim your nails. Use a nail clipper to clip off the part of the nail that extends past your finger. Trim them as short as possible. If they are too thick to cut with a nail clipper, use a course file to file them down.
  • 2File down the surface of the nails. Use a coarse-grit file between 150 and 180 grit. File gently and in crosshatches to keep the work even, moving the file to different areas so that you dont feel a burning sensation in one place.XResearch source
  • The filing process might take a long time. Resist the urge to work quickly or unevenly, which can damage the natural nail underneath.
  • Wipe dust away frequently. This will allow you to clearly see how much more gel there is to go before you hit natural nail.
  • 3Look for signs that you are close to the natural nail. You don’t want to keep filing once you get down to the natural nail, since you could damage it. Signs that you’re close to the natural nail include the following:
  • A big reduction in dust that is produced from filing the gel.
  • Visibility of the natural ridges in your nails.
  • 4File the remaining gel with a finer-grit file. Work slowly and gently to make sure you don’t file the surface of your natural nail. Though damage is hard to avoid when working with regular gel nails, working gently will minimize it. Continue until the gels have been completely filed away.XResearch source

    Gently Remove The Polish

Remove the foil and lift up the cotton balls to see whats going on with your nails. Some of the layers should be lifted at this point, but you can almost guarantee that there will be some polish left, hanging on for dear life.

If you cant rub the polish off with the acetone-soaked cotton balls, then you can grab a cuticle stick or pusher and use it to gently lift the gel layer off.

If the gel isnt budging, we recommend soaking your nails again. Another 5-10 minutes should do the trick. Whatever you do, just resist the urge to peel and pick .

How To Use Gel Polish Removers

  • Then apply some the remover onto your nails and let it sit for 5-6 minutes.

  • Now, once you see this use a cuticle pusher to push off the gel polish from your nails.

What’s The Difference Between Gels & Acrylics

First things first, lets brush up your nail vocab.

Perfect for a natural-looking manicure, gel nails are achieved in three simple steps. A base coat, a polish colour and a top coat. In-between each stage, the gel is cured under an LED or UV lamp , to leave you with firm, non-sticky nails that shine. Gel nails tend to last around two weeks before they start to lift or chip, and only take half an hour to apply.

What about acrylics? Warning: things are about to get a little technical. For acrylic nails, monomer liquid and polymer powder are combined to create a paste-like formula. This formula is then placed over a cured acrylic extension and left to set. After shaping and buffing, the acrylics are normally painted with a polish of your choice. They tend to last up to four weeks and are perfect for those who want to add length to their nails.

Soak Your Nails In Acetone Using Cotton Balls And Aluminum Foil

How to Remove Gel Nail Polish â?¤

Acetone is stronger and more effective than non-acetone nail polish remover, making it exactly what you need to remove your gel nail polish. Drench some cotton balls with the stuff, then hold them in place on your nails by wrapping each finger with aluminum foil. According to Yankee, this traps in heat to help the gel break down faster. Gel polish formulas vary in strength, so the wait time can be anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes. If you dont get it exactly right, you can always rewrap and keep on soaking.

Yankee’s expert tip: Sometimes its best to do one hand at a time at home. I like to start with the dominant hand to get the toughest part out of the way. So if youre a lefty, begin soaking the nails on your left hand, and then your right hand will be a breeze. Its a small change, but it makes a huge difference, she says.

Mistakes Youre Making When Wearing Gel Nail Polish

Chipping a perfectly good manicure is one of lifes most annoying frustrations. Since Im constantly opening packages and typing stories, wearing gel nail polish has been a saving grace when it comes to preserving my mani. While I love the flexibility a regular manicure provides, gel polish is so much more durablewhich is why I tend to stretch each manicure for as long as possible.

With gel polish, your manicure can last from two to three weeks, but with regular polish you’re lucky if it lasts five to seven days without chipping, Kristin Pulaski, owner of Paintbucket Nails in Brooklyn, tells SELF. According to Pulaski, in addition to staying power, another great benefit of gel is that it provides a harder layer of protection over the natural nail, which can result in increased nail growth.

Unfortunately, this durability and protection can be rough on your nails and make them weaker and prone to splitting. No one wants that, so there are a few things to keep in mind to maintain the health of your nails when youre getting gels. We asked Pulaski, celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley, and Christy Harpring, co-owner of Sea Salt and Sugar Nail Bar in Savannah, Georgia, to clue us in on gel polish mistakes to avoid.

Alternatives To Rubbing Alcohol For Nails

  • Grit File
  • Before you go on using a nail file to get rid of gel polish, keep in mind that you must use a base coat to keep your natural nails protected.

Head to a supply store and get a 180 grit file and use it to remove the topcoat of your gel polish by applying light pressure on your nail while moving the grit file along the surface of your nail and around the edges.

Next, you need a white block. Use the white block to give a light buff over your natural nails to remove any base coat that might be lifting, and blend in the remaining base coat into your natural nail.

As you well know, using a grit file will roughen the surface of your nails. So endeavor to apply both your gel residue remover and cuticle oil after filing off the gel polish to restore your nails nice and glossy look.

  • Toothpaste
  • Since toothpaste is abrasive, you can use it by applying a small amount to your nail then use water to rinse afterward.

  • Hand Sanitizers
  • Again, you can use a hand sanitizer as an alternative to rubbing alcohol. Dampen the cotton ball with the sanitizer and use it to clean the nail.

  • Deodorant Spray
  • Another thing you can use is a deodorant spray remedy. Simply spray your nail with the deodorant and wipe it away using a cotton ball. Keep in mind that making this work requires a few tries. So, keep at it until your desired result is achieved.

Taking Preventative Measures With Glitter Polish

How Do You Take Off Gel Nail Polish at Home
  • 1Make a base coat with glue and water. If you struggle to remove nail polish due to a preference for glittery polishes, there is a way to take preventative measures to make removal easier. This method must be done before you paint your nails but can be a great way to avoid nail polish removal problems down the road. You make a mixture of glue and water that you apply prior to glittery nails.
  • You will need white elementary school glue, an empty nail polish bottle, and water. Fill the bottle with about a third of the way with glue. Then add water and swirl around until the mixture is thin enough to be spread on your nails.
  • 2Apply and dry the glue base coat before putting on polish. Paint your nails with one layer of the glue base coat before adding your polish. Wait about five minutes for it to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. If you normally use another kind of base coat, such as one to prevent staining, apply that after your glue base coat.XResearch source
  • 3Apply nail polish. When you are done with your glue-based coat and any other base coats you use, apply your glittery nail polish as you normally would. The glue has hardened on the nail, and the polish hardens on the glue. Luckily, the glue comes off of your nail easily with some force, making it much easier to remove.

    Soak Cotton Balls In Acetone

Next, soak a small piece of cotton, or a cotton ball, in acetone and place it on the nail, Poole says. Just be sure this is 100 percent pure acetone, not the standard “nail polish remover” sold at your local drugstore. “Regular nail polish remover contains acetone but is diluted,” explains Poole. “You probably could remove gel nails with regular polish remover, but you would have to allow the nails to soak for a very long time. You need pure acetone to effectively and quickly break down the gel polish.” A bottle of acetone like Pronto’s 100% Pure Acetone will do the trick.

If Residue Remains And Youre Afraid To Over

Apply a clear top coat to your nails and let it dry. Then soak cotton swabs in acetone nail polish remover, place one over each nail, and wrap it tightly with a small square of aluminum foil. Wait 5 to 10 minutes and then remove the foil, one finger at a time, and gently scrape away the softened gel using a wooden stick. Repeat this process until no gel remains. How long this takes will depend on the thickness of the layer and also the product itself as some hybrids dissolve faster than others, says Bryzek.

How To Restore And Prevent Sticky Or Thick Polish

When your nail polish gets sticky, its as a result of exposure to air. Therefore, follow these steps to thin your polish.

    • The first thing you have to do is to clean off the brush with some polish thinner. This will remove any sticky or dried up clumps stuck in the bristles.
    • After that, take the polish thinner and apply 2 to 3 drops of it into the bottle.
    • Close the cap and roll the bottle between your hands to mix instead of shaking as it helps prevent bubbles.
    • After all these, your polish will be back to normal and easy to apply again.

Also, endeavor to keep the neck of the bottle clean by using a polish remover or acetone. When dried polish builds up, it makes it difficult for the cap to close completely thereby letting in air.

How to Remove Gel Nail Polish

    1. Resist the Urge to PeelIt can be tempting to peel your gel polish off, but resist the urge! Peeling gel off your nails can be extremely damaging to your natural nails. You end up peeling off the top layers of your nails themselves that can lead to brittle nails that weaken over time.

    2. Start with a Nail FileIf youve ever gotten your gel manicure removed at the salon, you probably noticed they file down your nails before starting the removal process. Grab a coarse nail file and gently sand down the top layer of gel polish. Dont sand down all the polish you just want to remove the shine and rough up the top coat.

    3. How to Remove Gel Polish Without AcetoneThere are many sources that will tell you to use acetone to remove your gel polish, but acetone can be bad for your nails and skin, so if you can remove your gel polish another way, its ideal. Wait at least two weeks before trying to remove your gel polish so that it has time to loosen and naturally chip off.

Once theyre chipped, you can lift up part of the gel nail with your fingernail or a pair of tweezers. Run your finger under lukewarm water and use a finger from your free hand to gently push the gel off your natural nail. Go slowly to do the least damage possible. If the polish wont come off with water, cover your nail with olive oil or cuticle oil and try again. Use a nail file to buff off any remaining gel.
