But, if you are ready to start growing into a fully profitable nail technician, you will need to keep track of your earnings and ensure you declare them for tax.
When just starting up, many nail technicians set themselves up as a sole trader. This means you are now self-employed and personally responsible for all of your businesses finances.
To do this, you need:
- A national insurance number
- A record kept of all your incomings and outgoings over the financial year
- To send a self-assessed tax return every year
- To pay income tax on your profits
However, remember that this only applies when you start making over £1,000 from self-employment. So, be sure to keep track of your businesses finances so you know when you reach this point.

Acrylic Nails At Home: Method
To do acrylic nails at home successfully, I have broken it down into five key stages. Each stage is a vital part of making sure your application is as smooth as possible and your natural nails are kept in the best condition throughout.
A key piece of advice before you begin your acrylic nails at home is, make sure you have everything you need at hand. Once you start, it will become harder to come away from what you are doing, so make sure you have easy access to everything you need, and you can open them easily.
Stage Five Final Touches
Now that you have applied the acrylic to your nails and it has dried, it is time to shape and smooth out the edges. To make sure your nails have fully dried, tap them gently, and if you hear a clicking sound, this means they have dried. This sound is hard to explain to a beginner, however, once you hear it, itll be easier to understand.
To shape your nails and smooth out any ridges, use a nail file with a grit of 180 220, as itll give you more control over the shape and wont take off much length. Try to define the shape you want and if you have any bumps when applying the acrylic, then smooth out those areas.
When you are happy with the nails shape and appearance, buff them to even out the nail bed and give it a smooth finish. You shouldnt need to buff it too much as you should have evened it out when shaping it.
Dust off your hands now that you have finished shaping and buffing your nails, and then wipe each nail with a lint-free wipe to make sure all the dust and moisture is removed before applying a topcoat.
If you have used a coloured acrylic powder, you can go straight on to applying a topcoat if you want to paint your nails, you can do it now. With regular nail polish, use two coats to ensure that the nail is evenly covered and the polish is pigment enough. Once all the nails are painted, leave them to dry for about 15 to 20 minutes.

- Now apply some glue on the tip .
- Then gently slip the tip down your nail till halfway. Keep it in place holding it for about 30 to 45 seconds.
- TIP: When you slip the tip then hold your nail at an angle of 45 degrees to make sure glue doesnt flow down on your finger as it will be then very difficult to remove the dried glue after tip is fixed.
- TIP: If any glue flows around the nail, gently wipe it using the soft nail wipe.
- TIP: If your tip crooked while applying, then wash the nail with warm water to make the tip soft and then remove it. Reapply the fresh tip.

Wet Bead Dry Bead Or Medium Bead
The next stage involves the difference between a Wet Bead, a Dry Bead, and a Medium Bead with a perfect Monomer to powder ratio.
This is essentially how much is applied to your Nail Brush Bead.
So lets start with a Wet Bead.
When you pick up a Bead you dip your brush in your Monomer and you want to push it down and get rid of all the bubbles.
This is called burping your brush and what this does is prevent bubbles in your acrylic when you apply it.
So then you wipe off the excess Monomer and all your liquid is going to be at the top of the brush. You want to turn that and dip it into your powder.

A Wet Bead is going to spread and what these are primarily used for is around the Cuticle area when you want it to really sync with your natural nail.
Now Im going to show you a Dry Bead
Now with a Dry Bead, you see its harder to get the Bead off of the brush and thats not what you want to use.
If you ever see your Bead doing this go ahead and wipe it off on your towel and start over.
You are in control of your acrylic application so if its not looking the way you want it to just wipe it off and start over.
Now Im going to show you a Medium Bead and its perfect liquid to powder ratio and you can see how it has a definite border around the Bead and this is perfect for building your acrylic foundation.

I want to give you a few pointers on correct sizing for the tips you dont want to buy your tips too small and you dont want to have to push down or it will not be fitting right.
If your tips are too big, they are going to pop up if you try to glue them down.
Similarly, if your tips go past the nail on the sidewalls, it is going to cause irritation and not look very good.
Essentially, your tips will not look that great if they lift.
So its important when choosing your tips that you get the proper size, you want them to fit nicely when you place them down on your nail.
