Your liquid monomer will become slightly milky as you work another reason to do all the whites first, and then change out the liquid to apply the pink product. Its best to apply the white powder for each tip in one ball pick up a ball of white powder, flip the brush over and press out excess liquid on a clean spot of your table towel.

What Are Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails are made of a combination of liquid and powder thats laid over your nail with a brush. Once the mixture is applied, your nails are filed and shaped to emulate the look of natural nails. After your acrylic nails are shaped, each nail is typically painted with a regular base coat, nail polish color, and finished with a top coat. Nails are then set under a fan to dry.

Both add a strengthening layer to the nail, but gels require a UV light in order to set. “Acrylics are much stronger than gel which makes them more durable,” says Lee. “If you are looking to extend your nail quite a bit, then you would want acrylics, but if you’re going for more of a natural look, gel is what you’d want.

Two: Choose Your Tips

In the next step, youre going to get started with tip application.

I want to give you a few pointers on correct sizing for the tips you dont want to buy your tips too small and you dont want to have to push down or it will not be fitting right.

If your tips are too big, they are going to pop up if you try to glue them down.

Similarly, if your tips go past the nail on the sidewalls, it is going to cause irritation and not look very good.

Essentially, your tips will not look that great if they lift.

So its important when choosing your tips that you get the proper size, you want them to fit nicely when you place them down on your nail.

( are great because they come in ten different sizes and are relatively inexpensive.

Plus, you can always shape them if you wanted a more rounded tip.)

How Acrylic Nails Work

When we said acrylic nails were magic, we were only slightly exaggerating. The science behind acrylics is amazing, and its a joy to watch it in action.

Harpers Bazaar tells us that acrylic nails are composed of two distinct chemicals: liquid monomer and powder polymer.

Only a tiny bit of each one needs to be combined to form a super-gelatinous glob of acrylic sculpting gel, which can be formed into any shape imaginable.

The instant that ball of acrylic gel is formed, time begins to run out. The stuff hardens very quickly especially if youre in a room with a lot of UV light coming in.

That means you dont have a lot of time before the acrylic gel reaches its final form! You need to work fast and make sure you dont misshape the new nail, or else you have bigger problems on your hands!

Of course, the worlds best nail techs are masters of the craft and are capable of some beautiful acrylic creations without any molds, forms, or guidance.

Here are a few upsides to acrylic nails:

  • The tough, resilient coating on your natural nails that can protect and maintain.
  • You can wear them for months at a time, with occasional touch-ups.
  • Limitless options for shapes, lengths, and designs.
  • A natural look that can make nails appear younger and stronger.
  • Can help to prevent nail biting and encourage good hygiene.

With all these benefits, its no wonder why acrylic nails are so popular these days. They can be customized for pretty much anyone, young and old, and made to match your style.

A Handy Nail Salon Equipment Checklist

All in all, having a complete nail salon equipment checklist can help keep your salon stocked. By having the right equipment and the right acrylic nail supplies handy, you can ensure that you appear organized and professional for customers.

  • TIP: Do not just leave the brush after you are done. Clean it well with acrylic liquid if you plan to use it the next time or its ruined!

Using A Pinching Tool

After you have practised doing acrylic for a while or are confident doing basic acrylics, you can use a pinching tool on the nail to make the nail longer, more slender, and to make a stronger C curve, which will make the nail stronger. If youre not using a pinching tool, move onto the next steps.

  • When the acrylic is still drying place the Pinching Tool on the nail like a clamp . If you want it to pinch really narrow then use the bottom end of the pinching tool.
  • Leave on for about 3 minutes.
  • Tap the nail to see if it makes a ting sound and then remove the pinching tool by squeezing the sides apart.

9. Wait a little over 2 minutes for the acrylic to dry .

10. File the entire nail until it is smooth on the top and around the edges and to make the shape more defined. .

11. Now you need to add a top coat to seal in the acrylic. The two steps below show 2 ways of doing this: If you DONT have a lamp to dry your acrylics:

Apply Air Dry Top Coat to your entire nail and leave to dry for about 2 minutes.

If you DO have a lamp:

Apply Urban Graffiti Top Coat / Mega Gloss or Matte Top Coat .

Put your hand under the lamp and turn on.

Leave to cure for 2 minutes under a UV lamp .

When the time is up, remove your hand.

12. Finish off the look by adding a stroke of cuticle oil to the cuticle area of each nail and rub in with your fingers.

How Can You Make Acrylics Last Longer

Contrary to popular belief, you can still use your hands when you have acrylics, however Lee recommends wearing gloves while doing things like cleaning. Also, use moisturizer and cuticle oil to keep your hands and nails healthy. I love Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Cuticle Oil, she says.

As with any treatment, do your research on the salonthe right care and attention to detail can help extend the life of your manicure in the long run. Beyond that, the biggest enemies to acrylics are wearing them beyond their lifespan and not keeping up with fills, says Lee.

Products That Make Self Manicures Easier

As with any hobby, there’s no limit to how many upgrades you can get for your home manicure set up. Polish color is up to your preference and design needs, but some tools I can’t give up include my gooseneck UV lamp, nail art brush kit, builder gel, and MelodySusie E-File.

The gooseneck lamp makes it so much easier to attach the tips, since you have ample space for both hands to hold your extension in place while the glue cures. I use my e-file to prep, shape, and remove old nails, or to take off designs when I want to change them. If you plan to just fill in nail growth instead of replacing your tips every time like I am, builder gel can do the trick.

List Of Nice To Have Items For Doing Acrylic Nails:

Supplies Needed for Acrylic Nails (with links) | @nailsbydiscua
  • A cuticle pusher

What the nice to have items are used for

  • A cuticle pusher

You use a cuticle pusher right at the beginning during the nail prep.

Gently pushing back the cuticles helps you to avoid getting anything on them. It can also help your nails to grow back stronger.

  • Cuticle nippers

If you have any loose bits of cuticle or hangnails, you can tidy them up with cuticle nippers.

  • A nail drill with bits

Nail drills are great because they save you so much time and give you super-smooth results.

They come with different shaped heads for reaching into the cuticle area and up to the sidewalls. So you can get an even finish.

  • 4 sided Buffer

4 sided buffers or nail blocks have different grains on each side. You use them to create a smooth surface on the natural nail to help the primer stick better.

  • Nail tips

Like long nails? Then get some nail tips for doing extensions.

Its best to buy a pack with a lot of different sizes so you can get a good sidewall to sidewall fit on each nail.

This is super important because if the tip is too big, it will lift and if its too small it will crack.

  • Nail glue

For sticking the tips to your natural nails or applying gems.

A good nail glue will go on smoothly, dry quickly, and last for ages without irritation.

Also good for fixing broken nails in a pinch!

  • Nail forms

Nail forms are stickers with grids on them. You use them to create extensions then remove them once youre done.

  • Tip cutter tool
  • Colored Acrylic powders
  • Nail edge clippers
  • Drill bits

This guide will be divided into different parts. First we need to collect all the supplies required to do acrylic nails at home.

Thoroughly Prep Your Nails

Stocksy

  • Remove Any Old Polish: Just as you would with any manicure, you must start by prepping your nails. First, remove any old nail polish. If you have gels, take the time to really soak it off so as to not cause unnecessary damage to your nail before applying acrylics .
  • Push Your Cuticles Back : Next, gently push your cuticles back. Once your nail polish is fully removed and your cuticles are pushed back, trim your nails to just beyond the smile line . You want your nails to be short since your acrylic tips will be attached to them and if you try to attach to long nails, your natural nail could snap off, causing your acrylic to as well.
  • Buff Your Nails: After clipping, file your nails so that theyre even and dont have any snags. From there, buff each nail so that your acrylic tips will have something to grip on to.
  • Most manicurists recommend against cutting your own cuticles, as you’re more likely to accidentally clip skin and cause infection. Instead, soak your nails in warm water to soften the area and then gently push your cuticles back using your thumb nails.
