Apply Cuticle Oil To Your Nail Beds

Acrylic or Gel Prep On Natural Nail

Another important part of nail prep: cuticle oil. Itll soften your cuticles so youll be able to push them back gently. And please don’t forget to wash or soak your hands afterward! You need to make sure the oil is completely off your nails before you start the gel processany leftover oil could cause your gel nails to lift . To be extra safe, swipe your nails with a bit of acetone before washing your hands to remove any excess oil.

How Do I Prepare My Nails For Gel Nail Polish

Preparing your nails for gel nail polish is very similar to what you would do before you put on regular nail polish.

First, you need to choose the length and shape you want to file your nails into.

The filing technique is different depending on the shape you want.

There are lots of different shapes to choose from and tons of tutorial videos online to show you how to file your nails into a number of different shapes like square, round, coffin and almond.

There are a few things to consider when choosing a shape.

Some shapes will work better for your nails than others.

You want to choose a shape that suits your nails, one that makes the most of their natural shape.

If your nails are naturally quite square, for example, then a square shape or a squoval shape will be easier to achieve and will suit you better.

You also want to take the condition of your nails into consideration.

If your nails are in really good condition, then you can pretty much get away with any shape you like.

However, if your nails are thin or damaged then youll probably want to keep them short and round.

Rounded nails are less likely to catch on things and get broken and they therefore usually last longer.

    Curing Your Gel Nail Polish

    When it comes to drying your gel nail polish, curing is actually the most appropriate term. You cannot simply flap your hands in the air and hope for the best. Instead, they need to be cured.;

Curing is a term that is used to describe the chemistry behind the process of toughening or hardening a material – in this case, the gel polish. You can cure your gel nail polish by using either an LED lamp or a UV lamp.; If you’re using Bluesky products, we advise using the Bluesky lamp for best results .

    It is easy to cure your gel nail polish. All you need to do is apply the polish, and then place your hand under the lamp, and press the on switch. Keep your hand still and leave it underneath the light until the lamp goes out. The gel nail polish lamps that are available today have been designed so that the light only stays on for the length of time required to harden the nail polish and not any longer.;

With most of the lamps that are available on the market today, you will be able to cure your whole hand at once. There are then some models which, when used, you can do your fingers and thumbs separately.

Should I Use A Uv Lamp Or A Led Lamp

A UV or LED lamp is essential. There are lots of different ones on the market.

UV lamps are generally cheaper but they also take longer to cure.

UV lamps use ultraviolet light similar to a sunbed. The typical curing time for a UV lamp is around 2 minutes.

A UV lamp should, in theory, be able to cure any type of gel nail polish.

LED lamps are more energy efficient and eco-friendly.

An LED lamp can cure in as little as 15 seconds, and most will have options to cure for 30 or 60 seconds as well.

There are some polishes on the market that cannot be cured by an LED lamp so you need to make sure that the brand you are using is LED compatible.

I can tell you that bluesky nail polish works really well with LED lamps, but Im not sure about other brands.

I would advise that you buy the same brand lamp as the polish that you are using if possible. A lot of scientific research goes into matching the polish formula with the wavelength of light used to cure.

How Do You Dry Gel Nail Polish Will Gel Nail Polish Air Dry

A lot of people wonder whether they can simply allow their gel nail polish to air dry. Unfortunately, this is not possible. Oxygen gets in the way of curing gel nails. The air will stop the molecules in the gel from binding together and hardening, and this is why you simply cannot let gel nails air dry. It wont work. But dont panic, as this does not mean that the process is a complicated one.

How Should I Store Gel Polish

How to Prep Natural Nails for Gel Polish Application ...

Its all too common to hear the sentence;my gel polish has gone lumpy;or;the brush for my gel has gone hard.;This is due to storing the gel polish in direct sunlight, heat or even too close to your nail lamp.

Any one of the above can be enough to begin to cure the gel polish in the bottle, meaning the consistency becomes thick and the gel sticks to the brush. Ensure all gel polish is stored in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. Keep the bottles away from your nail lamp as exposure to the LED/UV rays can also cause this issue.

Before you begin your manicure, youll want to gently roll each bottle between both your hands so that the gel is mixed evenly. No aggressive shakes here, as this can cause bubbles in the gel which will transfer to your nails when you apply not a great look!

    1. Removal. If you already have gel polish on, first properly remove the gel polish. I have several gel polish removal posts so be sure to check those out.

    2. Prep. Cut nails to desired length, file nails to desired shape, push back cuticles, etc.

    3. Buff. Buff the shine off of each nail using a 220 grit or higher file or buffer. A higher number means a finer grit. If you just removed a gel polish manicure, simply buff the new growth instead of the whole nail.

Tip: Dont buff too much or the gel polish may lift off of the nail. You want to create a course surface for the gel polish to adhere to. Be especially careful to not over buff the tips. Over-buffing can also damage your natural nails and make them weaker, so dont over buff.

Mistakes Youre Making When Wearing Gel Nail Polish

Natural Nail Prep for Gel Polish Application | Back To Basics with Kiki London ðð?¼

Chipping a perfectly good manicure is one of lifes most annoying frustrations. Since Im constantly opening packages and typing stories, wearing gel nail polish has been a saving grace when it comes to preserving my mani. While I love the flexibility a regular manicure provides, gel polish is so much more durablewhich is why I tend to stretch each manicure for as long as possible.

With gel polish, your manicure can last from two to three weeks, but with regular polish you’re lucky if it lasts five to seven days without chipping, Kristin Pulaski, owner of Paintbucket Nails in Brooklyn, tells SELF. According to Pulaski, in addition to staying power, another great benefit of gel is that it provides a harder layer of protection over the natural nail, which can result in increased nail growth.

Unfortunately, this durability and protection can be rough on your nails and make them weaker and prone to splitting. No one wants that, so there are a few things to keep in mind to maintain the health of your nails when youre getting gels. We asked Pulaski, celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley, and Christy Harpring, co-owner of Sea Salt and Sugar Nail Bar in Savannah, Georgia, to clue us in on gel polish mistakes to avoid.

It Is Not Allowed To Dry Completely

Not letting each of the layers dry properly is another of the reasons why gel nail polish is peeling off. As each layer does not dry after application, it does not have time to compact. In turn, this means they do not adhere well to each other, ending in separating and lifting. On average, a nail must be under the UV lamp for 45 seconds to be completely dry. If you don’t have a UV lamp it will take much longer.

Applying gel nails gives you the strength of acrylic nails with the appearance of natural nails. When applying gel nails, you dont get the strong fumes that you get when acrylics are applied. The gel hardens under UV light. Each layer has to harden under this light for two to three minutes. This creates a chemical bond that connects the gel to your nail.XResearch source
