, celebrity manicurist and founder of Masterclass Nail Academy, says, when possible, opt for a dry manicure instead of one that requires soaking in water. Getting Your Nails Ready

  • 1Get your supplies together. To give yourself a gorgeous manicure, make sure you have all the right supplies. You might have to spend a bit up front, but next time you want to paint your nails, you’ll already be covered. Get the following products:XExpert SourceNail ArtistExpert Interview. 23 April 2020.
  • Nail polish remover
  • Cotton balls or cotton swabs
  • Nail buffer

  • Top coat
  • 2Set up your workspace. Nail polish and remover can damage many surfaces such as cloth, wood finish and plastic. Wear an expendable t-shirt and no valuable accessories, sit at a desk or table, and protect it with scrap paper . Make sure the table itself and anything near it is not particularly valuable or important to keep perfect because there might be a spatter or spill soaking through. You might not want to work near a computer, for instance.
  • 3Remove your old nail polish. Use nail polish remover and cotton balls or swabs. Some kinds of nail polish remover may dry the areas on your nails and around them. You may wish to find one that doesn’t do this as much, but do not be concerned unless you have a severe allergic reaction.
  • If you have and wish to keep fake nails, such as acrylic, choose a polish that will not remove them, and don’t let it soak much.
  • Unless you use it once a month or less, don’t use a nail polish remover with acetone in it. Though acetone will make removing the nail polish easier, it can damage the nails themselves.

    Dixon says a press-on manicure that uses glue can last one to two weeks, but she recommends keeping your fingers as dry as possible while wearing them, which should help give them longevity. Oil and extra moisture loosens them up, she says. Keeping your fingers dry isnt exactly advisable during a pandemic when all health authorities advise washing your hands a ton . So with that in mind, its also a good idea to manage your expectations here. Press-ons are already more fragile than acrylics, and under the best of circumstances, a nail or two might pop off. The good news, of course, is that theyre press-onsso you should keep your glue close, Dixon recommends.

    Two to three weeks, but no more than three weeks. Even if the clients nails grow slowly, Kandalec says they should still have them redone around the three-week mark because the gel will continue to cure under the sun and will become harder to get off and potentially cause more damage than normal.

    To ensure your gel polish lasts the full two weeks, Kandalec recommends applying cuticle oil under the free edge in between appointments to prevent your natural nail from curling away from the gel.

    Clean Off Cuticle Residue

    Now its time to get any cuticle residue off your nail bed. When doing your manicure at home, Minina recommends skipping the soaking step you may be used to in salons, as the amount of scraping done by a home user doesnt require it. Instead, she recommends softening up the cuticle before gently pushing it along the surface of the nail with an orange stick. You can use a cuticle remover if you like, but Minina says, In my salon, we use jojoba butterit softens things up better! Plus, it lacks the chemicals commonly found in cuticle removers. Try: Planet Guru Jojoba Body Butter, which is natural-pressed and comes in a jar big enough to last months of manis! Speaking of which, when its time to choose a color, you may want to choose a nail polish without toxins.

    Nail Care Is Part Of Hand Care

    Having hydrated hands is only part of hand care, and the reason manicures focus so much on nails isnt just for aesthetic reasons. Keeping your nails in check also helps them stay strong and keeps the delicate skin around themcalled the cuticlehealthy. Your cuticle is one of the few places on your body where the skin actually ends, says Lippmann, so when it dries out it can rip and tear, causing painful hangnails. Hangnails arent just uncomfortable; they can be a portal of entry for infection, says New York-based dermatologist Ryan Turner, M.D. Just like when your hands crack, hangnails or cuts around your nails can let in bacteria and fungus. Fungal infections are particularly common around your nails and should be treated by a dermatologist, but the best thing to do is prevent them in first place by keeping your cuticles hydrated and hangnail free. If you already have hangnails, cut them off with a nail scissornever, ever bite them with your teeth, says Lippmann.

    Without regular upkeep, nails can also become weak. Weak nails can have a dull, powdery white or yellow appearance, says Dr. Turner, which of course doesnt look great, but weak nails also break more easily, which can be painful especially if they break or tear far enough to expose the nail bed. Sometimes weak nails are caused by nutritional deficiencies , but in many cases, Dr. Turner recommends a clear coat of polish which can help keep weakened or brittle nails protected.

    Getting Started With Your Diy Gel Nails:

    How to Do Manicure at Home Naturally

    First off, we want to start off with CLEAN, DEHYDRATED nails. I cant stress this enough! One of the biggest issues when it comes to gel polish not lasting is natural oils on the nail plate, so wash those hands and cleanse your nails with 100% pure acetone.;

    For this set we shaped the nails to a soft square. Youll want to use a nail file that has 180 GRIT. This is going to be soft enough to file the free edge of your nail without roughing it up too much, but it also has enough grit to where you can use it to gently buff the top of your nail plate so the gel polish will properly adhere. Make sure you do gently file over the whole nail so the polish sticks! It should look white and chalky.;

    One of the common misconceptions is that you should use a soft buffer to smooth over the nail plate, but if your nail is too smooth the gel will peel right off. Using the right grit and a nail file prolongs the longevity of your mani by a long shot!

    Moisturize Hands And Cuticles

    The most important step of any natural manicure: a good hand cream.

    Apply hand cream liberally to help lock in moisture so your hands and nails look like a million bucks for weeks to come. If your cuticles peel and crack easily, give them extra attention by massaging vitamin E oil or a nurturing cuticle oil into the nails and cuticles once per day. This prevents nail breakage, strengthens the nail plate and prevents ridges and grooves from forming in the nails.

    Gel Nail Polish Removers To Consider

    Here are some of the most recommended gel nail polish removal methods you can use to successfully remove gel from your nails.;

    Keep in mind that before trying any of these methods, you should use your nail file to file the top coat lightly or a buffer to buff the top layer of gel polish off before soaking it in acetone.;

    1. Soaking Your Nails in Acetone

    Due to the high-solvent nature of acetone, it remains as one of the best nail polish removers. However, using acetone frequently removes lots of natural oils and pales your skin, so keep your nails soaked in acetone for 15-20 minutes.;

    Nonetheless, it’s still a good gel polish remover. You have to settle for one of the two options to use it: file your nails and soak them in acetone, or soak cotton in acetone, and wrap your nails with cotton and foils. Either way, the polish will be out in minutes.

    2. Use a Gel Removal Steamer;

    A gel removal steamer does just what the cold one cannot do-it steams the whole process giving a warmer environment for faster effective results.;

    To use it, first make sure you have filed and buffed your gel polish. Then pour the acetone remover into the base, switch on the steamer, then stick your fingers into the 5 finger holes.;

    Typically, most gel removal steamers will beep you, indicating its done. When youre told its complete, use an orange wood stick or a nail scrapper to scrape off the gel polish.;

    Repeat the process until the gel nail polish is scraped off of each nail.
