How Do I Learn Nail Art If No One Is Available To Teach Me

I am an apprentice in a natural nail salon. Sometimes I get requests for nail art. I would love to learn how to do different nail designs, but I am a beginner. I live in Virginia and there are never nail seminars or lectures or even hands-on classes here. Do you have any suggestions on learning nail art designs when there is no one in my area to teach it? Watching videos is good but sometimes you just need hands-on.

Answer

There are very few people that last 25 years in this business like I have, and I do not believe you need hands-on instruction to learn nail art. I have only had one three-minute hands-on experience , and the only thing it did for me was spark my desire to go to school.

I do believe you need to have two things as an apprentice: determination and desire. Determination will keep you up until 3 a.m. practicing your designs, and the desire to be a great nail tech will keep you going. I have taught hands-on classes for many years. I have done tutorials for YouTube for 2.5 years. Being a teacher in both mediums, I will say that I cannot answer how badly the nail tech wants to succeed but how badly she wants it is exactly how good she will get.

I cannot tell you how many nights I was up learning how to make a perfect French manicure or trying to perfect a striping brush technique, but I will say that in the end, it was worth it.

How Much Does A Nail Technician Earn

In London, the average nail technician salary is £9.28 per hour. This amount will vary depending on a nail techs clientele and the level of salon at which they work. A nail technician working in a high end spa or hotel can earn triple this amount, while freelancing nail technicians set their own rates.

Remember, some nail studios operate with a chair rental policy. This means that you will earn a percentage of the money paid by each client, but you will need to pay the salon a rental fee for your space each month.

Some nail technicians do supplement their income with tips from clients, as a few pounds per treatment is customary at the lower end. At the higher end, nail technicians can expect to earn an additional 10 15% per treatment.

What Are The Courses To Become A Nail Technician

What can I do for my weak nails?

When you take a nail technology course, youll have to pick carefully. Theres a lot of choices out there, and some organisations are in it for the money.

If you go for a salon, check theyre registered with the beauty guild or their courses are approved by the CPD Certification Service.

If you go to college, all their NVQ qualifications are accredited. Heres how each level differs:

  • NVQ Level 1 application of knowledge and skills performing a range of work activities which are mainly routine and predictable.
  • NVQ Level 2 application of knowledge and skills performing a range of work activities in a variety of contexts. Some activities are complex or non-routine, and theres some individual responsibility. Collaboration with others through teamwork may be a requirement.
  • NVQ Level 3 application of knowledge and skills performing a broad range of varied work activities in a wide variety of contexts. Most activities are complex and non-routine, and there is considerable responsibility and autonomy, as well as control or guidance of others.

Youll be judged on your ability to meet these criteria, and thatll determine what course you take.

Other courses are accredited by different bodies, for example, ITEC, CIBTAC and VCTC.

Some courses may label themselves as level 3, but what does level 3 mean? Who has accredited the course? And is the accreditation going to help you get a job after youve completed it?

You need to think about this before you apply for anything.

Size & Apply Your Acrylic Nails Using Acrylic Nail Glue

How to Do Gel Nails at Home

Depending on the kit you get, youll have a variety of different acrylic tip sizes, widths, and lengths to choose fromjust as you would with press-on nails. Because of this, you need to go through the sizes to find the ones that best fit your tips. If there are no perfect fits, use your nail file to gently file them to the correct width.

According to nail expert Evelyn Lim, tips used for acrylic application have an indent on the inside of the tipwhich is approximately 2-3 mm at most and the free edge of your natural nail should fit right underneath. “It is best to trim the natural nail short prior to application,” she advises. Once youve selected your acrylic tips, apply them one at a time with a dot of acrylic nail glue. You want the bottom edge of the acrylic tip to be centered about one-third of the way down your nail so that it will remain sturdy as your nails begin to grow out. Apply pressure to the nail for five to 10 seconds to ensure that its secure and move on to the next tip until all 10 are complete.
