What Is The Outcome For Someone Who Has Nail Fungus

Toenail Fungus Treatment

With treatment, many people can get rid of nail fungus. Even when the fungus clears, your nail may look unhealthy until the infected nail grows out. A fingernail grows out in 4 to 6 months and a toenail in 12 to 18 months.

To clear the fungus, its important to:

  • Use the treatment exactly as prescribed

  • Apply the medicine for as long as prescribed

  • Keep all follow-up appointments with your dermatologist

Nail fungus can be stubborn. If you had a severe infection, its possible to clear the infection. A healthy looking nail, however, may be unrealistic, but you can expect the nail to look better and feel more comfortable.

Even with clearing, nail fungus can return. Youll find steps to reduce your risk in Tips: 12 ways to prevent another nail infection.

An Established Fungal Infection Is Hard To Eradicate But You Can Stop Its Spread And Improve Your Toenail’s Appearance

Toenail fungus isn’t a pressing health problem. Yet a fungal infection can ruin the appearance of your nails and cause pain as it lifts the nail away from the nail bed. And fungal infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Most often, you should consider fungal toenail a condition to be managed rather than cured.

The Initial Causes Best Non Prescription Nail Fungus Treatment

If you suspect that your nails are infected with fungus, it is best to consult your doctor and get a diagnosis. Your doctor will ask you about the symptoms and conduct a thorough examination of your nails. A biopsy is required to determine the cause of the infection. Various types of fungus are found in the skin, including the toenails. Among the most common forms of nail fungus are yellow and black, with white patches surrounded by dark brown or white spots.

The infection is caused by fungus. It can spread to the skin and other parts of the body. It is very common to find a nail fungus on the foot in elderly people, and it is often not treated until the condition gets worse. The disease can even be spread to the skin. The afflicted person should see a doctor immediately if they notice any changes in the color of his or her nails.

Nail fungus can occur in the toenails. The infection occurs due to a variety of factors, including excessive moisture, soaking your hands in water, and a lack of hygiene. If the afflicted person is prone to infection, the fungus will grow in the toenails and may spread to other parts of the body. Consequently, it is essential to prevent the nail fungus from spreading to the skin

How Do Otc Antifungal Creams Compare To Prescription

OTC antifungal creams are typically used to treat mild and common fungal skin infections like ringworm, jock itch, and athletes foot. Some are also used to treat vaginal yeast infections.

In some cases, prescription antifungal creams might be stronger or more effective at treating certain types of fungal infections. Some prescription products also contain a corticosteroid. A corticosteroid can be helpful for itching, swelling, and redness associated with a fungal skin infection. These include clotrimazole/betamethasone cream and nystatin/triamcinolone.

What Are Some Options To Treat Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is known as being very difficult to treat. Depending on the severity of the infection and the type of fungus that caused it, treatment options will vary. There are over-the-counter as well as FDA-approved prescription options available.

Topical medications, including medicated nail lacquers and antifungal creams, are some of the most successful ways to cure mild cases of toenail fungus.

In severe cases, laser treatment or the removal of the infected nail may be required.

How Effective Are Topical Treatments

The Best Treatment for Toenail Fungus, According to a Podiatrist

So far, only a few studies have looked into topical nail fungus treatments with nail polishes or creams. Because these studies had weaknesses, the results should be interpreted with caution. Amorolfine has not yet been well studied. Ciclopirox polish and treatment sets with urea and bifonazole cream were tested in a few studies.

Research on the effectiveness of nail polish containing ciclopirox showed that, after one year:

  • About 10 out of 100 people who did not use ciclopirox no longer had a detectable fungal nail infection.
  • About 32 out of 100 people who used ciclopirox no longer had a detectable fungal nail infection.

In other words, treatment with ciclopirox got rid of the fungal infection in about 22 out of 100 people. But even if the fungus had gone away, the cosmetic result wasnt always satisfying. The nails only looked healthy after treatment in 7 out of 100 people.

Treatment with sets containing urea and bifonazole cream was tested in one study. It was compared with a treatment in which only urea cream was applied and the nail was removed, but without applying bifonazole cream afterwards. Three months after treatment was completed, it was found that:

  • No fungus was visible or detectable in about 41 out of 100 people who only used urea cream.
  • No fungus was visible or detectable in about 51 out of 100 people who used both urea and bifonazole cream.

Seeking Professional Medical Help For Onychomycosis Aka Toenail Fungus

Onychomycosis can be extremely difficult to treat, and do-it-yourself options are largely ineffective. Also note that self-treatment can take months to be fully effective. This is why its almost always better to seek help from a trained podiatrist. In addition to saving time and money seeking professional help also offers the best hope for a complete cure.

When seeing a medical specialist it always pays to prepare for the appointment. Consider writing down the following information and questions to make the most of your scheduled time:

  • A list of symptoms. Include all foot symptoms, even those you may think are unrelated. Also list any systemic illnesses you may have, especially diabetes and other conditions which affect blood flow to the feet.
  • Your demographic information. This will include your primary care doctors contact information. Bring along your health insurance information as well.
  • Your prescription and non-prescription medications. Be sure to include any nutritional supplements that you take on a regular basis.
  • A list of questions. Its easy to forget any questions you may have if they arent written down. This is the single best method of making sure that all of your concerns are addressed.

Laser Treatment Of Nail Fungus

Surgery As An Option Of Last Resort

Top 10 Nail Fungus Treatment for Toenail Antifungal Remedies HcaKNI

As with almost all medical conditions surgery should be considered only after all less-invasive options have failed. In the case of toenail fungus this usually refers to topical and oral antifungals. Its also possible that a patient may be unable to tolerate oral medications, making surgery a more attractive option.

The goal of this type of minor surgery is to allow topical antifungal medications direct contact with the fungal infection. This is accomplished by removal of the nail. The first approach is temporary removal. This is usually, although not always, successful. If the nail in question still doesnt respond or is excessively painful then permanent removal may be necessary.

There are a number of treatments for onychomycosis. Unfortunately, many are not very effective. The most aggressive and effective way to treat the fungus is with oral anti-fungal medications. The most common oral anti-fungal medications are Itraconazole and Terbinafine . Both medications are expensive and insurance companies tend to consider onychomycosis a cosmetic problem. If you are diabetic, your insurance company may consider onychomycosis a medical problem, and will cover the treatment. If you are experiencing pain or have developed ingrown toenails as a result, then your insurance company may cover treatment. The medication needs to be taken once daily for 3 months. The effectiveness of the medications ranges from 60 to 80%, with a recurrence rate of about 10-15%. Complete cure rates have been reported as low as 28%. Topical Nail Fungus Medicines

Topical nail fungus medicines are available in several forms, including nail polishes and solutions applied by dropper. Prescription topicals include ciclopirox , efinaconazole , amorolfine and tavaborole . Youll have to you use them every day or every week for up to a year.

Using topical anti-fungal products alone isnt always effective, however, because nails are thick and difficult to penetrate. Unless your infection is mild, your dermatologist may suggest you combine a topical medicine with a prescription oral anti-fungal medication.

There are some exceptions. Topicals alone may be prescribed if you have a fungal nail infection caused by a mold, or if you have a less common form of nail fungus called white superficial onychomycosis, which affects only the surface of the nail and causes white spots that eventually become powdery.

What You Need To Know About Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis is the scientific name for nail fungus. The condition can be caused by a number of things, such as an injury to the nail. A weakened immune system makes it difficult to fight off the fungi. Diabetes also increases the risk of fungal nail infections. These treatments are often painful and require several months of treatment. Usually, the best option for treating nail fungus is to consult a doctor and seek treatment.

One of the first things to do is visit your primary care physician, who can prescribe a prescription for an anti-fungal medication. The medication can be applied to the affected area and is designed to work on the infected area. However, it is recommended that people with a serious infection consult a medical practitioner before starting the treatment. Topical medications require daily application and can affect other medical conditions. The best treatment is a combination of oral and topical medications.

If you have a fungal infection, you must avoid wearing shoes or socks. While you should not walk while wearing shoes, you should avoid using artificial nails. If your toe is impacted, it is important to have your nail trimmed straight across. If possible, wear comfortable socks and change your shoes in public places. A doctor will often send the clippings to a lab for identification. Changing your socks and wearing sneakers is also recommended.
