Essie Vs Opi The Best Nail Polish Brand

Nail polish, in some form, has been around since about 3000 B.C. and modern nail polish was developed in the 1930âs.

Of course in that time, the formulations, ingredients, colors, and types of polish have changed substantially. We now hear terms like ânail lacquer,â ânail enamel,â âgels,â and âacrylicsâ in addition to ânail polish.â

Wondering what all those terms really mean and what the difference is? So were we, so we did some research and found out that there is actually a great deal of debate as to the difference between lacquer, enamel, and polish.

Some companies say that lacquer and enamel last longer than polish, yet others say that they are identical. Without an industry standard defining the difference, companies are able to call their products whatever they wish. From a practical standpoint, consider lacquer, enamel, and polish to be the same product. They are all a nail color which is painted onto your natural nails and does not require any special curing process.

Gel and acrylics, however, are indeed different from each other and from polish. Gels are brushed onto nails in much the same way as standard nail polish with a base coat, color coats, and top coat. The difference with gel is that each coat must be cured or hardened under an LED or UV light for 2-3 minutes. Gels appear similar to standard polish, however they are stronger and last longer .

Battle Of Nail Polish Brands: Opi Vs Essie

Eunice Hong, Features Editor|June 4, 2014

OPI Alpine snow VS Essie Ballet Slippers

These past few days I have become obsessed with DIY nail art. But as my obsession got deeper and deeper, I realized with sadness that nail art costs a lot of money. And Im not exaggerating. Although nail tools such as dotting tools and brushes are also needed, the main source of the money draining product is of course the nail polish itself. With hundreds of brands out there, it can be hard to choose which one is the best. However, two of the most popular nail polish brands are OPI and Essie, both available at drugstores and beauty salon stores. Here is a breakdown of how they differ, and which brand I ultimately think is better.

Brush size:

OPI is known to have a very wide brush that can be positive or a negative. If you have regular or bigger sized nails, OPI might be a great brand to go for because it might be easier to apply and take less time. Contrastingly, if you have small nails, OPI might swallow up your nails. Trust me when I say not youre your nail but your whole finger might be painted.

Collections & Colors:

Price:

The price of the nail polish is very important considering that each bottle is almost the cost of a meal. OPI is a slightly more expensive than Essie with much of its polishes at 9 dollars. Essie nail polishes are $8.50. In my opinion, both are pricy but hey we have put that much into our nails right?

Whats The Difference Between Cheap And Expensive Nail Polish

In the world of nail polish, theres a wide range of colors, formulas, finishes and prices. But whats the difference between the cheap nail polish at the drugstore and a $50 designer bottle from a luxury department store, plus the mainstream salon and independent nail polish brands in between?

It turns out the main differences that affect price are marketing and packaging, according to experts.

The reality is that nail polish technology is rather mature and hasnt changed that much in a lot of years, Perry Romanowski, cosmetic chemist and co-host of The Beauty Brains podcast, told HuffPost. The biggest difference between expensive products and less expensive products is mostly packaging. The bottles for expensive products look nicer and the brushes also likely work better, but as far as colors and technology, there isnt much difference.

Economies of scale are also at play here. Larger nail polish companies can purchase in bulk and produce their polish more quickly and in higher quantities than an independent nail polish brand doing everything by hand. A cheaper nail polish isnt necessarily of lower quality than a more expensive nail polish, and nail polish made by a smaller brand isnt automatically inferior.

In fact, if youre in the market for nail polishes with special finishes, smaller indie brands are often the way to go.

Premium Packaging And Custom Formulas Can Lead To Higher Prices For The Final Products

In a crowded market, premium packaging and custom formulas are investments that some brands make in order to stand out.

A brand without a lot of capital may work with a private label company that can provide a catalog of standard colors and stock packaging to choose from to go to market quicker, Annie Pham, founder and creative director of Cirque Colors, told HuffPost. A brand that wants to stand out a little bit more may want to work with a contract manufacturer that can provide lab and formulation services, but all of this comes at a cost.

Pham added that brands often invest in unique packaging, such as a fancy box or custom cap, which also adds to the cost of the product. Bigger brands with a lot of money and resources can purchase polish and packaging in larger quantities to bring down costs, so they sell their product at a lower price than indie nail polish brands.

While a fancy box or bottle wont affect the performance of a polish, a superior brush will.

More expensive brushes are made up of fibers that are more elastic and better able to retain their shape over time, Romanowski said. This makes application easier to do and gives the user more control. Cheaper brushes may work fine for the first few applications, but over time they start to fray and lose their straight shape. Nylon fibers with the appropriate plasticizers will work best.
