An exterior contractor just finished installing HardiPlank Smooth Lap Siding on my house, replacing aged wood lap siding . I have a few observations I’m looking for input on before I approach the contractor.

1. Should any nails be visible? My understanding is that all nailing is done at the top of the board and then covered by the overlap of the board or trim above. I have found several small nails placed in visible locations near the bottoms and corners of boards. And occasionally I’ll find a short metal wire extending from under a board – what is this wire? See photos attached.

2. The edges are not as sharp as the HardiPlank installed 18 years ago; they are more rounded and

some are eroding or damaged, which is again inconsistent with the older Hardi installation. Can these be repaired or do the boards needs replaced or is some edge wear normal?

3. What am I seeing in the different colors of the boards that can be seen on the side of the house? We did not pick a color for this job, as we were painting after; all boards were to be primed.

Get Off To A Good Start

If you are completing a Hardie installation on new construction project you can easily measure off the new block or concrete foundation to find a level line and starting place. But if you are doing a re-side of an existing house or building check how well the existing siding matches up on the corners all the way around the structure before you start taking it down. If the existing siding was hung correctly and matches up, you can use certain pieces to get quick level lines on the wall that you already know are right. You can use the first piece of the existing siding to get a level line for your new starter course. It doesnt matter if the old siding is a different height than the new Hardie siding, you can still measure off a line you know made it around the home or building and matched up.;

Putting on the first two or three courses of; Hardie siding all the way around the home before you lay up an entire wall is never a bad idea, neither is making reference lines after several course high just to make sure corners come out right.;
