Heres another 5-free option. But purity aside, this irreverent beauty brand is one of the first to offer bold, creative colors beyond your typical nudes and reds. And since were talking about healthier options here, its important to note that all of its polishes are 100-percent vegan and cruelty-free.
The Basics: What You Should Know
5-free nail polish means that the nail polish doesnt contain the top 5 most toxic chemicals most often found in nail polish formulas. Typical 5-free polishes are do not contain dibutyl phthalate , formaldehyde and formaldehyde resins, toluene, or camphor. Avoiding these five hazardous chemicals should be your baseline requirement.
Meanwhile, 7-free nail polish goes a little bit further than 5-free. It means that the nail polish doesnt contain two additional not great chemicals usually ethyl tosylamide and triphenyl phosphate . Therefore, 7-free nail polish is just a little bit cleaner than 5-free polish.
Next, 8-free nail polish means that the nail polish does not contain dibutyl phthalate , toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, triphenyl phosphate or xylene. All of these chemicals are carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, which are toxic to our bodies.
Finally, 10-free nail polish is the best of the best. This means that the nail polish is free from all the same things as 8-free polish, as well as parabens and tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The 10-free designation is the highest standard in the non-toxic nail polish industry, and its the one that I personally strive to use most frequently.;
While 10-free polish is harder to find, its worth being scrupulous about. ;

Why Choose Safe Nail Polish Brands
Triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, is a common ingredient in most nail polish. Apparently, this chemical can leach through the nail bed and into womens bodies. It then acts as an endocrine disruptor, interfering with normal hormone functioning. Read more about the endocrine disruptors in nail polish on the Environmental Working Group website. I spent a lot of time reading the article and then doing a bit of follow-up research. That research now has me even more confused. I dont want my daughter using toxic nail polish brands but how do I figure out which ones are really dangerous?

Buy From A Reputable Outlet
Yes, cosmetics do get counterfeited, cautions Elle. So even if a product claims to be non-toxic, the only way you can ensure you actually get what you think youre getting is to buy from reputable beauty outlets, such as drugstores or big box stores, she says.
- What makes a nail polish non-toxic?
As is the case with most cosmetics, theres no governing body overseeing these claims and, as mentioned, pretty much all brands are 3-free these days. Ideally, the higher that free number, the more confident you can feel that youre getting fewer questionable chemicals.
- Do non-toxic nail polishes expire?
Yes, all nail polishes expire in the sense that they start to separate and wont work as well. Theres no danger of bacterial contamination as there is, say, with expired mascara, but as a general rule of thumb, you should ditch any polish, non-toxic or not, once you notice the color changing and/or separating.
- How long do non-toxic nail polishes last?
Use a good base and top coat, and they can last as long as any other polish. Innovations have made many of these non-toxic options as long-lasting as their counterparts; you can even find at-home, light-free gel polishes that are non-toxic if you really want serious staying power.

Removing Several Chemicals From The List Of Nail Polish Ingredients Does Not Make It Safe
To begin, in 2006, OPI reformulated its nail polish to remove dibutyl phthalate .; An endocrine disruptor, DBP has a rating of 10 in the EWG Skin Deep database. ;OPI also states that its nail polishes do not contain formaldehyde or toluene. ;But does the absence of these chemicals automatically mean the nail polishes are safe?
You may have heard of so-called non-toxic nail polishes free of the toxic trio or the Big Five.;To clarify, the ingredients that comprise the toxic trio are dibutyl phthalate , formaldehyde, and toluene.; And the Big Five consists of these three, plus formaldehyde resin and camphor. ;But, though camphor and formaldehyde in nail polish are not good, I believe they are not the worst offenders.
When I hear the phrase free of something, I look into what manufacturers use instead.; What matters here is whether they disclose the substitutes and whether they are safer and have enough health safety data. ;Stay with me to find out what ingredient OPI nail polish uses now, after removing DBP.

What Are The Safest Nail Polishes
Fundamentally, not all gorgeous-looking nail polishes are equally formulated. Plenty of formulations on the market are packaged with hazardous and unnecessary chemicals that could be absorbed into the body.
The safest nail polishes you can resort to are those products that are labeled as free of the three major toxic components we previously mentioned: dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde.
The truth is, there is a notable allegory around the toxicity of nail polishes. You will come across 3-free, 7-free, 9-free, 10-free, and so on.
Nevertheless, the next time you see a nail product indicated as 7-free, be sure to review the rest of the ingredients listed. This way, you can understand better what type of nail polish you are choosing.
What Is 10 Free Nail Polish
If a nail polish brand is 10-free, it means its free of ten of the most harmful leading polish ingredients. These ten ingredients are the toxic trio, as well as camphor, formaldehyde resin, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, fragrance, and animal by-products.; But its not all about the number ten. There are different options from 3-free all the way to 10-free, and even beyond.;
However, these labels dont necessarily mean that a brand is 100% safe. It may just indicate that its a safer alternative to conventional polishes. You still need to remain mindful while shopping for your next mani-pedi set.

Smith & Cult Price $18
My Rating: 4/5
Procs and Cons: Ive been using this brand for quite some time. When I was a stylist, this was a brand I often noticed a lot of professionals were using. Personally, I love the shades and they offer a variety of neutrals and muted tones. I used this brand on my pinky and ring finger. I found the color to be slightly on the thinner side but that may have had more to do with what color I choose.; It was by far the lightest in the bunch. My only complaint with this brand was the brush. It had the thinnest brush and an awkward handle. If youre a pro you might not find this a big deal, but if you struggle to paint your nails you might find this hard to apply.;
Why I Love It: Smith + Cult is Vegan + Gluten-Free, 8-Free Formula: No Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Xylene, Ethyl Tosylamide, & Triphenyl Phosphate.
Rating: Smith & Cult is what I would opt for at the salon for sure, but at home, I think youll have trouble properly applying.

Safe Nail Polish Brands
Let me start by saying this: there is NO nail polish out there that is 100% non toxic or 100% safe for you. It truly is that simple, paint that will unnaturally stick to your nails and not chip is not something anyone has YET to make without any added harmful chemicals.
Why does that matter? You may think that because your nails are not your skin that nail polish is safe to use, think again! Mainstream nail polish does indeed enter your blood and contains extremely toxic chemicals that are linked to cancer, terrible skin reactions, reproductive damage and respiratory complications!
That being said, there are a few brands that are safer to use if you want that fresh mani pedi look. Here are some of my personal favorites . Hope this list is helpful!
Can You Use Nail Polish Remover When Pregnant
Medical experts we consulted unanimously agreed that it is safe to use nail polish remover during pregnancy.
They advise that although the chemical acetone is found in nail polish removers, it is still perfectly safe to use when pregnant. This is because removers do not contain a large amount of acetone in them. As a result, there is no substantial risk to you or your child when using the product.
Nail polish remover is safe to use during pregnancy, confirms Hussain Abdeh, a qualified superintendent Pharmacist at Medicine Direct.;
Many brands of nail polish remover contain a manufactured version of acetone; this could lead to developmental issues if used excessively over a long period. However, using a nail polish remover once or twice a week will not be enough to pose a significant risk.
Midwife Hannah Harvey agrees that pregnant women can use nail varnish remover without too much concern:
You can use nail polish remover in pregnancy, she says. But again I would limit the amount you are using to a minimal amount and try to do it in a well ventilated room.
After you have removed your nail polish and used the remover I would wash your hands and nails thoroughly, again as a precautionary method.;
