The Brands Used In Salons
Initially, at the salon I was using the CND Shellac on clients at the salon for a long time because it really does have the easiest soak off and is a bit kinder to your nails.
I did stop using this because one thing is its UV cure and I found that it was kind of hit or miss when being used under an LED lamp, especially if you have to wipe the sticky layer for problem polishes.
So if you are using a UV Lamp its a terrific option, but if you have an LED Lamp then this probably isnt the Gel Polish for you.
My preferred base and the one we often use is the Gelish.
The main thing I really like about it is a thicker gel than a lot of the bases are.
Additionally, the short stubby brush while its kind of weird to look at, is actually my favorite brush to use. Make sure that you get as close to the cuticle and its kind of nice to kind of scrub that into your nail and not have to worry about pooling or too thick of a base coat.
I do find that if you are using a longer brush with and the base coat is thin in consistency, you tend to apply too much of the base coat. Remember, you dont want too thick of a base coat.
The Gelish Base Coat provides great wear and a lot of the base coat will be leftover.
The Essie Base Coat has one the absolute easiest removals, and it also helps to resist your nails from chipping which is a nice bonus.
Now as far as the top coats go, it will once again depend on personal preference in which one you will want to use.

Purchase the necessary items. In addition to gel nail polish, youll need a curing lamp, base and top coats, nail file or emery board, nail buffer, cuticle removing tool and scissors, acetone nail polish remover, and cotton pads. Youll also need foil or nail soak clips for removing old gel polish, and alcohol to wipe your nails when finished. A cuticle removing gel or liquid may also be needed.
Remove old nail polish. If its a gel, apply acetone with the cotton balls or pads and cover them with foil or clips. After about 15 minutes, you can begin scraping off the softened polish with the cuticle tool.
Prepare your nails. Trim and file your nails and cuticles as needed, and use cuticle remover if necessary. Buff your nails for smooth, even surfaces, and wash and dry your hands.
Apply a thin base coat. Cure your nails under the lamp.
Apply the gel nail polish. Carefully coat your nails. Apply additional coats as needed to achieve your ideal shade, but remember to place your nails under the curing lamp to set after each coat.
Apply the top coat. Cure your nails one last time.
Wipe your nails with alcohol. This step will remove excess resin build-up that is a product of the curing process. However, some no-wipe formulas dont require this step.

- There are a lot of over-the-counter gel removal options available but the frustrating part is that you cant know how well they work till you get home. They are essentially an acetone soaked sponge in a jar and you just need to stick your finger in the jar and twist, implying that the nail color would magically come off. This can be risky as it doesnt always work and might involve a waste of time, energy, and money.
- You can also fill a large bowl with hot water and place a smaller bowl inside it, basically creating a double boiler. Pour an acetone nail polish remover into it, soak your nails in it for about 10 minutes and use an orange stick to push off whats left of the polish.
