Since weve been spending so much time at home over the past few months, Ive stayed busy by testing out new skincare treatments, brushing up on my , redecorating my apartment, experimenting with streaming workouts, and I even learned how to apply fake nails like a pro.
Truthfully, prior to quarantine, I hadnt done my own nails in YEARS. Ive been loyal to the same manicurist since 2013 and would go see her once a month, every single month, without fail. I never missed a single appointment!
So when nail salons were forced to close, I had no choice but to figure out another solution.
I tried an at-home dip powder manicure, and although I loved the way it looked, it took WAY too long and really only lasted for a week or two.

One of the biggest questions I get asked is how to make press on nails last longer. Press on nails are so easy and convenient and I love how you can mix and match them with your different looks. But, OMG I used to struggle with how to get them to stay on longer! What I learned is that its all in the application.
The one thing that used to drive me insane was not being able to keep them on long without one popping off while doing something like digging into my purse. Ill show you below, the steps I still use to keep my press on nails on for a good amount of time. I can usually wear them for about 3 weeks. Trial and error is really how I figured out what worked best for me. Hopefully, if you try the steps below, you too can enjoy wearing your press on nails for waaaay longer!

This isnt a mandatory step, but its something I do and have noticed it helps my fake nails last longer.
Alcohol or a dehydrator will help remove any leftover oils or residue on your nails, and itll create the optimal clean surface for the press-on. I swear by these cotton pads from Amazon. Theyre the BEST.
Apply A Hardener On Top
Press-on nails, unfortunately, are not as hard as acrylics. Therefore, they will most likely bend at some point. To stop the bending, add a hardener on top. I personally invested in gel polish and a gel lamp so that my nails can mimic a gel polish to my liking. If youre not willing to take it that far, try Sally Hansens Hard As Acrylics Hardener.

Step : Shape The Press
My biggest tip for making press-on nails look real and making them last: shape them. Many fake nail sets are very long or very pointy. If you’re not used to nails like this or you want a different style, all you have to do is take a pair of nail clippers and a file, and shape them the way you like.
