Brush or comb the turf with your desired tool such as a push broom, backside of rake, or carpet comb. Apply the infill EVENLY EVERYWHERE, one layer at a time, using either a drop spreader or a broadcasting spreader. Take your time and pay attention to how much area you are covering with one or two sandbags. You should walk at a CONSISTENT speed and adjust speed depending on how fast the sand is falling out of your spreader. You can hand spread these areas for hard to reach or small areas such as corners or against walls where a spreader cannot reach. Brush or comb again; repeat these two steps until you are out of sand/rubber bags or have reached your desired level of infill.

If any uneven areas of infill that the broom or comb cannot fix, quickly use a leaf blower about 3 inches from this area, and the infill will soon disperse. Feel free to level out any other areas, especially corners and walls, with the blower also. Once you are happy with your infill and brushing, generously hose the entire project area down evenly. Consider this the last self-leveling step. You will be able to manipulate the infill once its dry again, which may take a few days.

Tip, : to help weigh the turf down and help keep the turf from matting down from high traffic areas. After turf material installation is complete and glue/seams are set, make sure the sand/rubber you buy is dry and that your turf is dry when applying the sand/rubber.

What Type Of Nails To Use For An Artificial Turf

My daughter would like to use it for an art project, possibly covering a chair.

Answered Jan 25, 2020 2:46 PM

Normally you will need to use either 40D or 60D bright common or galvanized nails ranging from 5-7 in nail length for artificial turf installations outside as a real lawn replacement. However, in your case that you are trying to cover a chair with artificial grass, I wont recommend theses types of nails. Instead I will suggest you to use either glues or heavy duty double sided carpet tapes or even regular staples. The regular type of nails for typical articulate grass installations would be too thick and too long for your particular project: to cover a chair with glues, all you will need is a 32 oz tube, here is the link for it:

Remove all dirt and debris from surface of weed barrier prior to turf installation. Lay turf onto base and position where needed. When positioning, be sure to lay the turf pieces so the grain, or direction of the blades on all pieces face in the same direction. This will help eliminate a patchy look and help hide seams.

What Type Of Nails Do I Use For Artificial Grass

The type of nail you use for installing artificial grass will depend on the unique project you are working on. Most jobs should be completed using a 5.5″ or 6″ non-galvanized nail unless you need more fastening power, where you can use up to an 8″ spike. In rare circumstances you may need to use a screw for fastening to edging board or a material not conducive to using a nail. Landscape pins shouldn’t be used to fasten artificial grass because they simply don’t have the fastening strength of a nail or spike.;

A galvanized nail has been treated with a molten zinc coating with the purpose of protecting the underlying material from corrosion, rusting and structural damage.;

    Q: Are there different kinds of artificial turf?

    Q: Is it safe for children and pets?

    A: Artificial turf and synthetic grass is safe for children and pets. When installed correctly, it provides excellent shock-absorbent cushioning for any rough play. It is also widely non-toxic, lead-free, and ecologically-friendly.

    Q: What is infill, and do you always need it?

    A: Infill is any material spread over the artificial grass during installation. It helps to keep blades standing, while also protecting the turf and increasing longevity. Infill may also be included in a layer between the backing and yarn of your artificial turf.

    Mistake 1: Joining Tape Is Used Incorrectly

    Joining tape is supplied in lengths up to 100m and is placed between the two pieces of turf.

    Joining tape is 300mm wide and firstly, its important to ensure that it is rolled out so that each piece of grass will make contact with the tape and adhere to it.

    Youll also need to make sure that you have the correct side of the joining tape facing upwards, otherwise the adhesive will not bond correctly.

    Youll also notice that both sides of the tape have different textures. One side is smooth and shiny, and the other is rough. To use the joining tape correctly, ensure that the rough side is facing UP, as this is the side youll need to apply the glue to.

    If you apply the glue to the smooth side, the adhesive will not adequately bond the artificial grass to the joining tape.

    Solution: Before applying the adhesive, ensure the rough side of the joining tape is facing upwards.

    When Is It Best To Use Real Grass

    Depending on your lifestyle, location, and ability to maintain your lawn, real grass may be a better fit. Consider who will be using the space, advises McFarlane. If children are going to be the biggest users of the space, youll likely want to consider real grass because artificial turf can produce surface temperatures that are near asphalt pavement in warm climates. Real grass is perfect for those who have an adequate water resource to maintain it and dont mind mowing once in a while, says McFarlane. The best person to install either real or artificial grass? A reputable, certified landscape contractor or specialized sod installation contractor.

    Preparing The Ground For Your Synthetic Grass

    Nail for Artificial Grass
  • To prevent any regrowth from weeds and unwanted plants, place a plastic membrane over the entire cleared area.;
  • Apply a thin layer of crushed stone over the top of the plastic membrane.
  • Use planks of wood to create a new layer over the top of the crushed stone.;
  • If you are laying your artificial grass over the top of concrete or paving stones, its essential to check that it is level. If not, you will need to use a spirit level and create extra height with additional concrete or other materials. You will also need to make sure that there is adequate drainage close by to handle excess rain and water.
  • We recommend that you use a foam underlay on the top of the concrete to create a more comfortable feel underfoot. Easy Turf suggests using 5mm of foam underlay on top of concrete and pavers to give some softness.
  • Use a compactor where necessary to ensure a level and robust finish to your foundations.

    Mistake 1: Failure To Install A Sand Infill

    This is a hotly debated topic in the online world. Should you or shouldnt you install a sand dressing/infill?

    The answer to this is categorically yes.

    There are several reasons for this:

    -It adds ballast to the grass, preventing movement and rippling

    -It supports the artificial fibres

    -It regulates the temperature of the grass

    -It increases fire resistance

    -It improves and regulates drainage

    -It prevents static

    You may hear some people claiming that it is unnecessary or that they have a non-infill artificial grass, but unfortunately this type of product does not exist.

    Its just marketing spin to make a product seem cheaper to install.

    The additional cost of installing a sand infill is certainly worth it. You can pick up bags of kiln-dried sand from your local DIY store for just a few pounds each.

    You may find our calculator on this page;useful in working out just how much sand your artificial lawn will require.

    Solution: Install a sand infill to your artificial lawn.

    Mistake : Failure To Install An Appropriate Edge Restraint

    Another common mistake we see is the failure to install an edge restraint.

    Edge restraints are an important aspect of artificial grass installation for two reasons.

    Firstly, they retain the sub-base and laying course, preventing the lawn from collapsing at the edges, and secondly, an edge restraint will give you an anchoring point to which you can secure the perimeter of the grass.

    When it comes to choosing the edging material for your lawn you have several options.

    A metal edging system for artificial grass

    Treated timber, plastic lumber, treated sleepers, concrete edging or a metal edging system will all do the required job.

    The perimeter of the lawn can be secured using either galvanised nails or artificial grass adhesive such as Aquabond or Multipurpose Adhesive.

    Solution: Use a secure edging system capable of retaining the sub-base and laying course.

    Mistake : Insufficient Excavations

    Unfortunately laying artificial grass directly on top of soil or existing grass just will not work. The finished result would be an extremely uneven looking lawn.

    The key to long-lasting artificial grass is just as much about getting the groundworks right as it is choosing the right fake grass.

    We recommend removing a minimum of 75mm below the finished height of your lawn, which includes removing all existing grass and weeds.

    For poor draining areas, we recommend excavating to 100mm .

    To check your excavated depth, pull a string line tight across your lawn and measure between the string line and the subgrade/soil level.

    Use a turf cutter to remove your existing lawn quickly and easily

    To make the excavation process as quick and as easy as possible, we highly recommend that you hire a turf cutter from your local tool hire shop. The cutting blade can be adjusted to remove your existing turf in easy to handle rolls.

    Solution: Excavate to a minimum depth of 75mm.

    How Do You Nail Artificial Grass

    Protips – Screws for Artificial turf installation

    The sole purpose of artificial grass nails is to hold the turf in place, while resisting sliding and lifting. They are usually only tacked around the perimeter and occasionally along seems as an extra measure to keep the grass down in addition to artificial grass glue. In installs where seams are in excess of 20 feet, the combination of glue and nails adds a little extra security to prevent the grass from shifting.;

    The actual placing of the nail is similar to hammering a nail into wood, except you need to be more careful so you don’t catch the grass blade under the nail head, or create a dent in the ground, which may be noticeable. In order to prevent pinching the grass under the nail head, ensure that you spread the grass blades as you get to the last couple swings of the hammer. Gently tap the nail so that the head of the nail sits snuggly against the backing of the artificial grass, and not further.;

    The spacing between spikes is dependant on the traffic, type of grass and other factors. A spacing range of 4 to 10″ is ideal and roughly 1 inch in from the edge of the synthetic turf. Along seams it’s good practice to offset the nails so they aren’t lined exactly opposite each other. The key is to be patient when nailing artificial grass and it’s a skill that gets easier over time. If you are installing artificial grass for a dog be certain that the spikes are fully set so they aren’t easily pulled out by a curious puppy.;

    Types Of Edging System For Artificial Grass

    An important aspect of any artificial grass installation is to put in a suitable edging system.

    An edging system serves two main purposes.

    The first is to act as a restraint for the aggregates used in the groundworks.

    For a typical fake grass installation, youll need to excavate your existing lawn and install a sub-base consisting of a minimum of 50mm of MOT Type 1.

    On top of the sub-base, a laying course of granite limestone dust is then levelled and compressed.

    In order for the installation to be successful, youll need to ensure that the aggregates you put underneath your artificial grass are retained on every side to prevent any subsidence of the sub-base or laying course.

    This is achieved by installing a suitable edge restraint.

    The second reason to install an edging system is to provide you with an anchoring point for the perimeter of your artificial turf.

    It will need to be secured at the edges to prevent it from being lifted.

    Your artificial grass can be secured in a variety of ways and it really depends on the type of edging that you have chosen to install as to which method would be best.

    When it comes to choosing your edging, you have lots of options.

    In this article were going to be looking at the different options in detail to help you decide which edging system would be best for your application and budget.

    Youll see that there is no one-size-fits-all and there are pros and cons to every type of edging, as described below.
