How Long Does It Take Nail Polish To Dry Completely
Naturally, our first question has to be how long does it really take nail polish to dry? If you have applied a base coat, two coats of color and a top coat, Rae says “this should take one to two hours to dry completely. Formaldehyde-free polishes may take more time to dry.”
Tong recommends Smith & Cult topcoat in Above it All and base coat in Basis of Everything to guarantee we can return to some activities 10 minutes after the mani. “Polishes can dry in a timely fashion as long as they are applied thinly and evenly on a clean surface and topped with a proper topcoat,” says Tong. Key words: thin and evenly.
Dip Your Nails In Cold Water
It sounds strange, but it is true! After youve completed your mani or pedi let it sit from a few minutes so that the nail polish can settle after application, then put your nails into a bowl or container of ice water and leave them in the water for around 4-5 minutes. This will surprisingly cut down your dry time down, although may leave you a bit chilly.

Backstage Manicure Tip: Exactly How Long To Wait Between Coats To Get Your Nail Polish To Last According The Nail Maven Essie Weingarten
When I ran into nail guru Essie Weingarten backstage at the Costello Tagliapietra, I immediately set out to hunt her down to pick her brain for nail tips. I mean, how could I not? And, of course, she laid a few gems on me, but this one particular tip got a big ol’ star next to itmy shorthand for “DO SOMETHING WITH THIS TIP!” What was it? I asked her exactly how long she advises to wait between coats to make sure your polish lastsa very important question, obviously.
And her answer was…drumroll please…2 minutes. Yup, 2 full minutes between the base coat and the color, two minutes between color coats, and then two minutes before the top coat goes on. She says that’s all you need to wait in between to get a dry enough surface to get the next layer to adhere.
It’s interesting because I tend to go way longer in between when I do them myself, but I notice that when I go to the nail salon they hardly wait any time at all. So this two-minute deal splits the differenceand will save me time on my DIY jobs. Sweet.
How long do you usually go between coats? Will you change your timing now that you’ve heard Essie’s stance on this? Got another tip that makes your nail polish last longer? Spill below!

Know That Drying Time Varies
Mimi says that drying time depends on a number of things: how many coats you apply, how thick each coat is, and what type of polish you choose. If you consider all these aspects, she says you can expect drying time to take anywhere from five minutes to an hour. If you don’t have an hour to wait, Bannon says you want to at least wait 20 minutes before doing anything with your hands, which will allow for the top layer to start drying. This method isn’t foolproof, but it will at the very least minimize any chance of smudging.

It can take 20-60 minutes for nail polish to dry completely. If you want to speed up the process, you can paint quick-drying polish in thin layers and try using drying spray. In addition, you can try using a blowdryer, cooking spray, or ice water. With one of these options, you can easily go about your day without smudging your perfect paint job!
Starting With Greasy Nails
If theres oil on the surface of the nail before the polish is applied, its much easier for polish to peelnothing sticks to an oily surface, Candido says. Instead, wait to apply cuticle oil after the polish, and go easy with the lotion. Its best to use a product like Gelish pH Prep to ensure all surface oil and moisture are eliminated before applying your basecoat.
This kind of product works by neutralizing the pH level in the nail to better accept the base coat. Basically, its like a primer for your nails.

Choose Your Colour Wisely
If youre short on time and need your nails to dry fast picking the right colour can be crucial. In this case, picking a lighter colour or even sheer or metallic shade is your best bet because they dry faster with fewer coats. Darker shades sometimes take longer to dry because of the strong pigment. Also by choosing a light sheer shade, youre likely to make fewer mistakes.
Allow Time To Dry Between Coats
Weve all made the mistake of being impatient and just layering on coat after coat. Not waiting for the previous layer to dry before going on with another can increase overall dry time and not to mention create a globby mess. Depending on the formula of the polish you should wait between 2-5 minutes between coats. This makes a world of a difference and will decrease the chance of bubbles forming. Yes, it may take you time to paint but its all worth it to avoid any smudging or smearing of your nails.

Going To Bed Right After Applying Polish
Although nails will appear dry within 20-30 minutes, it actually takes a full 24 hours for nail polish to fully dry.
A super easy trick to help the drying process along is to wait a minute or two for your polish to start setting up, then run very cold water over your hands for about three minutes, says Candido. The cold water helps the polish set up faster. However, she warns, Be careful to not to run the water directly on the nails as the force of the water may cause the polish to smudge.
The Whole Process Is So Easy And It’s Only Two Steps: 1 Apply The Color 2 Apply The Top Coat Here’s What My At
Look, I’m not perfect at painting my own nails, but I’d say I can do a pretty decent job. I put on two coats of color to make it really pop and then the top coat. Easy peasy! It took a bit to dry, but not as long as regular nail polish does.
I then went on living my life. I went to work. I typed on my computer. I met a friend for breakfast. All while my nails looked pretty dang amazing.

Dry Nails By Taking A Dip In Cold Water
Now that we know cold air helps polish harden, employ the same cool principle with water: Dip wet nails into a bowl of cold H2O, says Liang just be sure to wait at least a minute before doing so to allow your polish to set preliminary.
A two-minute dunk should dry nails to the point that you can go about your business as normal.
But while this little hack may be a solution for some, Apfel Glass actually recommends ditching water altogether during the mani process because she says that it’s a “breeding ground for germs and bacteria.”
It can also cause your mani to chip quicker too, according to Apfel Glass because “water causes the nail plate to expand which then causes the polish to chip once the nail dries and assumes its original structure.” So if you’ve got the extra time, wait it out or try one of our other tricks. But we’d be lying if we said the cold-water trick didn’t work.
Drip Oil On The Nails
Another old school hack, just like quick-drying drops the oil works to speed up drying. Olive oil or even baby oil works in pinch and hey it works to hydrate your nails too! Apply a layer of oil on top once your polish has settled a bit. Wait up to 2-3 minutes, gently tap to test the polish then wipe it off with a dry towel. And ta-dah, you should have a dry finish.

Avoiding The Whole Cuticle Area
If youre not super diligent about keeping your cuticles in check, your manicure will look messy.
You only need to leave a hairs width between the polish and the cuticle, says Candido. To get as close as possible without touching the cuticle, plant the brush on the nail plate near the cuticle and apply light pressure to spread the brush out. Then, lift slightly and push towards the cuticle, stopping at the cuticle without touching it. Then, swipe down the nail turning the brush slightly in your fingers to the left or the right to get along the sidewall .

Taking A Hot Shower Right After Applying Polish
Never shower immediately after a manicure, as you probably havent given the polish enough time to set in. A steaming hot shower is even worse.
Exposing the nail polish to the heat and steam of the shower can cause it to bubble or smudge, says Danielle Candido, manicure expert for Gelish. Its best to wait a full hour after the manicure is done before showering.

Using Old Nail Polish
Theres nothing more depressing than saying goodbye to a favorite nail polish thats looking a little worse for the wear, but its gotta be done.
As polish ages, the solvents evaporate, causing it to thicken and get stringy. This makes applying polish quite difficult, Candido explains. Old polish doesnt adhere to the nail as well as fresh polish does. As a rule of thumb, go through your polishes every year and replace anything you didnt buy in the last 12 months.
