Just because salons are closed, doesn’t mean we can’t do a little something special for ourselves at home. Try giving yourself a hand massage, for example.
Start off by placing a few drops of cuticle oil in the palm of your hand, and mixing it with your favorite lotion. Sally Hansen’s Salon Pro Gel Nail Polish kit is my top pick for beginner nail artists looking to channel a true salon experience at home. The kit contains everything you need for a traditional, no-frills gel manicure: a base coat, color, and topcoat, acetone remover, and LED light. It also comes with application accessories, including a cuticle stick and buffer to prep the nails, plus alcohol cleansing pads to wipe any tacky residue sticking to the nails after they’ve been cured.
The Salon Pro Gel Nail Polish Kit was the first I tested, and the first traditional gel manicure I’d ever had. As a beginner, I appreciated that each bottle was labeled one through three to specify which order to use them in. Directions on how to use the kit were also written on the box, as well as in an instructional pamphlet, so the margin of error was slim.
Overall, my experience with the kit was a positive one, but there are some cons worth mentioning. For starters, I applied Sally Hansen gel polish on one hand, and a Butter London polish on the other, to test whether or not the lamp worked on other formulas , and to compare the quality of nail polishes. Unfortunately, Sally Hansen chipped after just four days of wear, while the Butter London polish held up for a solid week.
How Often Is It Safe To Do Gel Nails
Most gel clients can easily go 3-4 weeks between fills. However, it can be beneficial to start out with 2-week intervals until you see how she is adapting to her nails. As time progresses the intervals can be extended to 3 or 4 weeks. The key is consistency and regularly scheduled appointments.

Applying Poly Gel To Dual Forms
Compared to what the professionals use, Poly Gel is a little thicker, but its otherwise very similar. Heres how to create your extensions with it, using solid dual forms.
Poly Gel kits are usually sold with hard dual forms, which is why this is the method we explain. You can also use Poly Gel with sticky nail forms, mostly following the process in the next section. The only difference is that you would need to dip your brush in alcohol to move the Poly Gel around since its not as fluid as self-leveling gel.
What Are Gel Nails
There are a few different types of gel nails you can choose from. Heres a quick overview of our top three:
– Gel is applied to the real nail. Its simply brushed onto the nail in three stages: a base coat, polish colour and topcoat, before being cured under an LED or UV lamp . This process sets the gel solid with no sticky residue, creating a lovely shine with zero waiting time.
– An acrylic nail kit uses artificial nails, usually added to the tips using liquid acrylic and powder great if youre looking to add length or alterthe shape.
– Shellac is the brand name for a product made from both nail polish and gel. Its applied straight to the nail and is available in many different colours. Pretty nails in a flash!

Four: Smoothing The Natural Nail Bed
After the first round, there was a still a little polish left over, so we repeated these same steps. But even after, my nail beds still felt a little rough. That’s when Lin told me to use a drop of sundays’Hydrating Cuticle Serum on each nail and let it work its magic.
“You may buff your nails while you have cuticle oils on your nails, which creates a thin layer to protect your natural layer during the buff process and it will also gently remove dead skin on the side,” she shares. Lin suggests to also make sure you only buff your nails in one direction to avoid any damage.
The result? Beautiful, smooth, healthy nails immediately after gel removal.
Make A Simple Shellac Manicure
You can use any color of nail polish and get the same results. Just paint your nails with a coat of red polish, let it dry and then add a second coat.
Once you have done this, you can use a UV or LED lamp to cure the polish. Wait two minutes before adding another coat of polish so that the polish has time to dry in between coats.

Does It Contain Quality Polish
If youre fully committed to at-home gels and looking to cut back on salon visits, Aaron recommends investing in a kit that contains quality, professional polishes, such as the LeChat Perfect Match Gel Polish. & : Soak It Off & Wrap It Up
There are two ways you can do this next part.
The first option is to pour acetone into a small dish and soak your fingers in the acetone for 10-15 minutes. To make the process even faster, we recommend placing your small dish of acetone into a bigger bowl with warm water. Warming up the acetone will allow it to penetrate the product faster and make your removal process much easier.
The second option is to soak your cotton balls in the acetone instead. One by one, place an acetone-soaked cotton ball on top of your nail. Grab a small piece of foil and wrap it around your fingertip to secure the cotton ball to your nail. Gently press the foil, so it forms to your fingertip. Allow your nails to soak for 10-15 minutes.

Apply A Second Layer Of Color And Finish With Topcoat

After the first coat is on, you can decide if you need a second coat to achieve a more opaque look,” Snowden says. “Once you cure the second layer completely, apply the topcoat which will serve as a shield, and add more shine. Apply the topcoat thinly, covering the entire nail and capping the free edge.
Tip: If the nail surface looks uneven after applying the topcoat, Snowden says flipping your hand over can help. “Flip your hand over for 15 seconds while the topcoat is still wet. Gravity will pull the topcoat to the middle of the nail and will give the appearance of a nice natural round nail before curing.
Tips For Applying Gel Polish At Home
- Shake, shake, shake your polish before application to make sure it mix well. A good shake make your application easier. Invest in a good nail polish shaker.
- The purpose for applying nail bonder is to ensure optimal performance by increasing the bonding between natural nails and the gel polish. If you feel that your application doesn’t last as long as it should be, try using a nail bonder.
- Get yourself a nice and handy cuticle oil, like CND Solar Oil or Gelish Nourish Oil, because you often need to keep the nails moisturized as using gel polish can be dehydrating.
- Any brand of 36-watt UV Lamp or LED light works. The professional LED light that can cure 5 fingers at the same time is preferable. With UV Lamp you have to change the bulbs regularly and takes more time to cure. With LED lamp, you don’t need to change the bulbs, it last longer and cure in a shorter amount of time.
- If you are concerned with UV Light exposure you can apply sunblock on hands or wear the UV Lamp fingerless gloves before application.
- If you find out that your gel polish is thick, use gel polish thinner before application. This is a recommended product to save your gel polish life.

One: Removing Gel Polish
Once the official shelter-in-place orders were announced, plenty of us likely thought to ourselves, um, how the hell do I remove my gel polish? The answer is that there are two ways to do this, but one may completely demolish your nails, while the other will leave them in pretty good shape.
While soaking the nails in pure acetone is the go-to solution, not all formulas are built the same.
Before our Zoom appointment, Lin sent me sundays’Non-Toxic Gel Removal Kit, which includes a gentle gel polish remover that still gets the job done and won’t make you pass out if you accidentally take a whiff of it.
You’ll also want to grab some aluminum foil cut up into 10 squares, and lay down a few sheets of paper towel on whatever surface you are using to help with cleanup.
It’s also important to keep in mind that doing the full removal process on your own can take up to an hour to complete. So make sure to carve out some time, or put on your favorite TV show before you get started.

Stylish and sturdy, gel nails take quite a bit of work to apply. With the right tools and techniques, youll be able to create a professional-looking gel manicure. To add length and drama, glue on a set of nail tips before applying the gel. Youll need to use a buffing block to roughen up the shiny surface from both your natural nails and the tips, but once you do this you can apply all of the gel layers from your cuticle to the free edge of the fake nail tip. Cure the gel under a UV or LED nail lamp and dont forget to fix up the edges with a nail file before finishing off your manicure.
My Favorite Gel Nail Polish Colors
When it comes to polish, I typically prefer OPI Gelcolor. Its what Im used to from my salon. I love the range of colors, and the soak off process is easy without harming my nails. I also love that their gel polish offerings mirror their regular polish. So if youve always loved cult-favorite colors like Bubble Bath, youll have the option to wear it in gel polish, too.
There are countless kinds of gel nail products available, and theyre not all the same quality. Some are harsher, require filing off, etc. So be certain to read packaging and do your research on their recommended removal techniques.
As far as colors, my favorite deep burgundy red polish that I wear on my toes essentially year-round is OPI GelColor in Got The Blues For Red, which I order via Walmart. My favorite color to wear on my hands in the summertime is Lisbon Wants Moor, which is a beautiful opaque light blush, and in the winter I actually use Got The Blues For Red on both my hands and feet most often. When shopping for gel polish, Ive found great OPI GelColor options on Overstock.com as well as Walmart.
