I think this is the easiest part of the whole thing. There’s some finesse involved in it but most of that comes from knowing how to paint nails in the first place . I’ll provide tips as I go along.

How To Remove Dip Powder
While you may think that removing powder dip is different than removing gel, its actually a similar process. Luckily, Syreeta shared the exact steps you can take to remove the color from your nails and you can follow them below.
Step 1: Its always best to file off the top layer of the artificial nail .Step 2: Once that top layer has been removed you may then soak in pure acetone for a faster soak. The less acetone percentage of a remover can prolong the process. Soak in a small bowl for at least 5 to 7 minutes.Step 3: Then take a paper towel or your finger to rub off the first layer then file off the product that has been soaked. Repeat the process as needed until the dip has been completely removed from your nail.Step 4: Once the product has been completely removed you may then begin a manicure process. This process is needed to replenish oil and nutrients back into your natural nails.
Instead of wrapping your nail in foil and cotton covered in acetone, Syreeta suggests fully soaking your nails for 5 to 7 minutes as the dip is thicker and harder to remove than gels.
How To Do Dip Nails At Home To Not Lift
1) Prepare your nails. Trim the cuticles and file your nails . 2) Paint with primer and dip the nails in dip powder. Paint your nail with a thin, even base. 3) Remove excess dipping powder. Once the powder has settled, brush off the excess. 4) Apply a second coat . I liked the look of the first coat on the nails but wanted to add a second coat to give them a look.

One More Clear Coat Then Activate
Finally, youll dip one more clear coat , just like you did in step 2.
Go over each nail one last time with the acrylic tool, double and triple checking that the cuticles are clean . Brush away any excess powder one last time.
Then, use your step 2 on each nail. This isnt really a polish, more of a liquid, so go over everything well. It will dry almost like rubbing alcohol.
Allow to dry for a minute or two, until surface of the nail is hard.
How Do You Make Gel Nails At Home
Take the tip of a shaped gel nail and apply a drop of glue to the tip of the natural nail. While holding the gel nail at a 45 degree angle, simply slide it over to place it on the adhesive. Adjust it to your liking before setting it up. Hold the nail in place until it is completely flat against the natural nail.

You Are Not Using Activator Correctly
Many people unknowingly skip the activator step either because they dont know what its for, or dont think its necessary. Activator is used to cure the powder and harden it. While it may not look like it does much on the surface, when you add activator over your powder a chemical reaction occurs that helps form the powder into one solid mass.
If youre having issues with your at home dip nails cracking, the easiest remedy would be to add more activator and see if that helps. Try adding a generous amount of activator after each layer of powder and see if that helps with the breakage.
Step #: Apply Base & Dip A 3rd Time

Next, select the Dip Powder color you would like to use! Use your Base a second time and apply it to the nail, just a hairline away from the cuticle. PRO TIP: Have your Dip Powder ready to go because the Base dries quickly. Dip the nail into the color powder a 45-degree angle once again. You might find it easier to shake the powder from side to side slightly to allow the powder to fall onto the nail instead of pushing the nail into the powder. Dust off again with your fluffy brush!
The Buff And Fill Method For Cracked Dip Nails
This is the most common fix for cracked dip nails. If the crack happened beneath your top coat, you’re going to need to buff the surface away so that you can reach the crack. You can either use a nail file or a drill for this. Once you’ve removed the top layer you can apply your base coat over the crack and dip your finger in the same color again. The layer will become uneven–don’t worry about this. Apply activator and let the layer dry before buffing it smooth. Then apply a thin layer top coat over the entire nail. Tada! Good as new.

Step #4 Clip Your Nails
Next, youll want to clip your nails to a shorter length. Typically, dip powder nails are a bit longer than your natural nail, so you want to remove that excess length now, especially if your manicure has been growing out for a while. Keep in mind, the shorter your nails, the less dip polish youll need to remove.

Tools Required For Removing Powder Dip Nails At Home
To remove powder dip nails carefully, you need to keep the following tools handy and know how to use them individually:
- Nail file A nail file will be used to file down the polish top coat.
- Nail clipper This will be used to cut the extra length of your nails and keep them short to make your job easy.
- Acetone You will need to get 100% acetone from a drugstore or retail shop as regular nail polish remover is not effective for removing dip powder manicures.
- Cotton balls Cotton balls will be soaked with acetone to cover your nails.
- Paper towels Paper towels can be used in place of cotton balls if you want to try a different method for removing your dip manicured nails.
- Small bowl This should be filled up with warm water.
- Foil The foil paper should be cut into small square pieces to fit around your nails.
How To Get Perfect Diy Dip Nails At Home
Tips before you get started: Before you start, there are a few things you should know. It will take you about a 1/2 hour for you to do your DIY dip nails at home. So, be prepared. Next, I am writing out every single step so that you dont have to try and figure it out. When I was trying to figure it out for myself, all of the instructions were pretty basic, and hard to follow as a newbie nail person. Im not a nail professional and, if youre reading this, Im sure you arent either.
Step 1: Starting with the basics, wipe off polish and gently push back and remove any excess cuticles for your dip nail polish to last longer, shape your nails with a file. You also want to make sure that you clean out underneath your nails. You can always soak your nail for a few minutes in soapy water and this helps your nails to get even cleaner and prepped for you dip powder nail DIY.
Step 2: Then, buff your nails quickly and brush off your nail surface before sanitizing them with a bit of alcohol or antiseptic, or the nail prep bottle that comes in most dip nail kits.
Step 4: Dip your nail into the jar of your chosen powder, and keep it there for a few seconds with some slow rolls from time to time . Then, shake off the excess powder off your nail.
Step 5: Repeat step 3 and 4 except apply the gel starting at the base of the nail and make sure you get the edges of your nail as well. Side note, if you get any of the gel on your skin, make sure you wipe it off.

Remove The Old Dip Powder Nails
This is the longest part of the process, mostly because I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. After seeing my wife’s nails get ruined with cleaning supplies, I assumed straight acetone would chew right through the old nails. The two internet tutorials that I watched on this process also GREATLY exaggerated how fast this process was. The order that I’m going to put down is not the order that I went with but would probably provide the fastest results.
Step 1: Mechanically remove as much of the old powder as you can.
As you can see in the first photo, soaking the nails doesn’t work as well as I was led to believe. So, go straight to mechanical methods. Turn your drill on and get to filing! Don’t worry about getting clear down to the nail in this step, just remove what you feel like makes sense. I could have removed more but decided against it because I don’t have a clue as to what I’m doing and preferred to not have a story that started out with “hey, remember that one time that you sanded my nail off?”
Step 2: Acetone Wrap
Cut 10 large aluminum foil squares. Dip your cotton balls in the acetone, place it on the nail, and wrap it in foil. Twist the ends so that it looks like you know what you’re doing. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Remove one foil cap at a time and rub the nail with the cotton ball, re-soaking as needed.
Step 3: Acetone bath and scrub
Soak Your Nails In Cotton
Take your cotton balls and soak it in acetone. When picking the type of acetone, make sure you get something that is specific for artificial nailslike the Gelish Artificial Nail Remover, which is pure acetone and made to soak off polish.
Once the cotton balls are fully saturated, place the cotton section onto the nail and wrap the foil securely around the finger. Make sure the foil is snug so that no acetone escapes.
