Water Permeability Test Does Not Work On Paper Napkin Or Coffee Filter

Orly Breathable Nail Polish Review – Halal Certified?

The use of these surfaces for the Water Permeability Test may result in false positives due to the nature of the material.

Various paper based surfaces can be coated with water repellent chemicals such as starch.

This is done in order to increase the shelf life of the product and to increase the tensile strength.

For this reason, for the purposes of performing the Water Permeability Test it is advised to use untreated paper towel.;

When it comes to halal nail polish, theres always going to be various arguments as to what is and what isnt permissible.

The good thing is that we live in the age of information, and its always at our fingertips.

So when in doubt about breathable nail polishALWAYS ASK.

Whether it be your local Imam, your high school science teacher, or even the companies themselves that make these products, you should always be fully satisfied with the answers to your questions and concerns.

Water Permeability Test Does Not Work On Hard Surfaces

When performing the Water Permeability Test, an absorbent surface is necessary in order to demonstrate the flow of water in one direction.

On a hard or non-absorbent surface, the water may pass through water permeable nail polish, however, the water flows in both directions, hence giving the impression that the water is simply sitting on the surface of the nail polish.;

Does Breathable Nail Polish Make It Halal

The first time breathable nail polish hit the mainstream was in 2009 after a brand claimed to add silicone hydrogel to their nail polish product suite. This brand pointed to the fact that silicone hydrogel is used in things like contact lenses to give it an element of breathability and prevent dryness as water vapor permeates through the outer coating.

We put this claim to the test. After all, claiming something to be Halal or Halal-certified isnt to be taken lightly as it can impact our religious obligations as Muslims.;

What we discovered was that water vapor does penetrate through breathable nail polish but only if one coat of polish is applied per nail. If at any point you apply more than one coat, it becomes impossible for the water vapor to effectively permeate. Another problem with this claim is that water vapour is the gaseous state of water, and in order for water to become vapour, it must be heated to 100 degrees Celsius or higher. Therefore, the act of wudhu can not be performed by vapour, only water in its liquid form.

This brand has released some material showing how its polish performs on absorbent surfaces such as paper towels and coffee filters. In other instances, it claims that water vapor penetrates through the nails after vigorous rubbing of over 30 seconds.

Water Permeability Test Does Not Work If The Nail Polish Is Peeled Off A Surface And Placed On An Absorbent Surface

QUO BY ORLY BREATHABLE NAIL POLISH in 2020

Some attempts have been made to perform the Water Permeability Test by using a layer of nail polish that has been peeled off a hard surface and then placed on an absorbent surface.

This method creates a false negative due to the contraction of the peeled nail polish.

Think of the nail polish as a balloon with holes, stretched over a rough surface.

When stretched, the holes become large (hence allowing water molecules to pass through.

However, once the nail polish is peeled off of a surface the nail polish contracts and the water channels/pores of the nail polish contract and miniaturize.

This prevents the water from passing through the nail polish.

Is It Really Halal

There have been many debates about usability and whether it is appropriate for Muslim women to wear halal nail polish. Some conservative Islamic scholars argue that nail polish should be avoided as it is regarded as ornamental. As it warrants unnecessary attention like other ornaments, nail polish should not be worn in the presence of a non-mahram.

Others such as notable American Imam Omar Suleiman defended the use of breathable nail polish as a Halal alternative. The use of normal nail polish might be considered embarrassing for Muslim women as it indicates that they are experiencing menstruation.

Another glaring criticism is whether this porous nail polish is truly Halal as apparently, its water permeability is not very high. There is no credible research rooted in science and facts revealed to support its breathabilty.

Most pseudoscientists conduct experiments using coffee filters where they would apply a coat of both regular and halal nail polish onto the filters and allow it to dry. Another coffee filter would be placed underneath before drops of water was placed over the nail polishes. Through this amateur experiment, water was able to seep through which supports the claims of permeability.

Orly Creates Halal Nail Polish Line With Muslim Girl

Everyone deserves to be able to paint their nails fun colours. And now, maybe everyone can.

Orly is collaborating with the lifestyle website MuslimGirl to release a line of Muslim-themed nail polish for the month of Ramadan.

The #HalalPaint collection is part of Orlys Breathable line of polish, which claims to be better for nails than regular polish because it allows air and water to penetrate the polish to the nail itself.

The polish also advertises itself as 13-free, which means its vegan and lacks 13 ingredients many consider harmful that are common in other polishes, like formaldehyde and xylene. Orlys website also states the polishes are halal-certified and do not require a base or top coat.

The halal-certification and breathable qualities in the polish are of course whats notable about this particular line. Muslims are usually unable to wear regular nail polish because it creates a barrier between the nails/skin and water, which prevents Muslims from washing their entire bodies, as is required for prayer ablutions, according to PopSugar.

The fun polish line is filled with playful names for its target audience like Haram-Bae, What the Fatima? and Ig-Noor the Haters, and is designed for a demographic that often gets overlooked when it comes to beauty products.

Orlys own line of breathable polish has been available since 2016, and has been certified by the Islamic Society of the Washington Area, according to Glamour.

Are Halal And Vegan The Same

Many people are curious to know the difference between Halal and Vegan cosmetic products. Its interesting to know that yes, there is a difference. If a product is halal, although it is rare, its not always considered to be vegan, as muslims are allowed to use ingredients such as beeswax, honey and animal fats that have been halal sourced from halal animals. Vegans are not allowed to use such ingredients and if a beauty product is vegan, that does not necessarily mean that it is halal. Vegan cosmetics can sometimes contain alcohol and some alcohols can make the cosmetic product impure for Muslims. Make sure to read a products ingredients and/or look for the halal logo on the packaging to ensure it is certified halal.

Did They Have Nail Polish In The 1800s

Orly Breathable Nail Paint || Halal Nail Paint || Jesreena Chowdhury

In the 1800s and early 1900s, people pursued a polished rather than painted look by massaging tinted powders and creams into their nails, then buffing them shiny. One such polishing product sold around this time was Grafs Hyglo nail polish paste. Some people during this period painted their nails with an air brush.

Applying Breathable Nail Polish

Brittney Boyce, consulting nail artist for ORLY explains that before applying breathable polish , “always file, buff, and cleanse your nails with alcohol to remove any natural oils,” for a longer-lasting manicure. Orly’s formulation is a 1-step application, so if you’re using the product, all you’ll need are two coats. For other breathable polishes, they’re typically applied just as you would “normal” polishjust be sure to follow any instructions or recommendations provided by the manufacturer.

What Makes Most Nail Polishes Haram

Many formulas include the prohibited ingredients described above. Additionally, nail polishes are also not breathable & do not let water or air through to the nails. You may ask why should this matter?

This act of washing before prayer is referred to as performing Wudu- wudhu is a ritual washing of the hands, lower arms, face, head, and feet that is completed before performing the five daily prayers salah. Traditional polishes form a barrier over the nail, therefore oxygen and water are unable to touch the skin itself. Practising Muslims need to completely remove nail polish before prayer and later apply it again. The constant application & removal of nail products is not only an inconvenience but can also be damaging to the nails and cuticles especially the ones that contain all the nasty ingredients!

What Does Halal Nail Polish Mean

When we say that #HalalPaint is halal-certified it doesnt have anything to do with its permeability; it means that ORLY Breathable ingredients are Halal certified by the Islamic Society of Washington Area .;

#HalalPaint borrows an idea from contact lens technology. The breathable formula creates a non-occlusive film on the nail that allows oxygen and water vapor to pass through. This unique formulation also allows excess moisture to escape from the nail allowing longer wear. ;

The use of ORLY Breathable for Ablution or Wudu should be left to the discretion of each person using it and they may check with their cleric or their religious leader beforehand.

The Benefits Of Breathable Nail Polish

  • Combats Waterlogged Nails: One of the goals of Orly’s unique breathable line was to combat waterlogged nails. “Nail cells;expand and contract as they absorb and hold moisture, which makes;nail polish split, chip, and peel, so we created the Breathable;formula to be more permeable than our traditional nail lacquer,” Pink says.
  • Healthier For Your Nails: By now you’ve probably heard the recommendation to let your nails “breathe” or take an au naturale vacation in between frequent manicures. But by using these water-permeable polishes, your nails have the potential to stay more hydrated and moisturized, even with product on top.
  • Less Harsh Chemicals: Unfortunately, all polishes contain chemicalssome more than others. While lacquers and polishes that are 5- or 7- or 9-Free are widely considered to be the most “safe” and non-toxic, breathable polishes tend to contain fewer harsh chemicals when compared with their more-traditional counterparts.
  • It Dries Faster: Because oxygen can permeate through the polish as it dries, you’re likely to experience a shorter wait time for your nails to dry completely.
  • It Lasts Longer: Breathable polish just might be more durable than regular polish. How? The oils that build up underneath traditional polishes can cause chips since polish won’t properly bind with oil present. But with breathable polish, your nail’s natural oils can move through, and eventually, off of your nails, which can make your manicure more durable and last longer.

    Muslim Girl X Orly Launch Halal

    There should be no need to choose between your personal beliefs and a great manicure, so ORLY has partnered with MuslimGirl.com to create a line of nail polishes, named #HalalPaint.

    The first collaboration of its kind with an American beauty brand that caters to Muslim women, the #HalalPaint collection features six Breathable nail polishes made out of 100% halal ingredients and is uniquely permeable to water.

    Some Muslim women avoid wearing traditional nail polish because it creates a barrier on their nails against ablution water for prayer. ORLYs Breathable formula, both oxygen and moisture are able to pass through the layer of polish. The collaboration with MuslimGirl.com aims to present a viable beauty solution for Muslim women, as well as introduce a new way to promote nail health.

    This line is important because there are so many girls and young women who arent represented in mainstream beauty. They either dont fit that definition or see things about them that are designed without them, instead of for them and by them, explains MuslimGirl.com chief of staff Azmia Magane. This is our way of bridging that gap.

    The nail polishes also feature tailored names created by Muslim Girl like Haram-Bae and Wallah Bro Wipe Out, as well as common Muslim girl names like What the Fatima?, Ig-Noor the Haters, and The Perfect Amani-cure, named after the MuslimGirl.com founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh.
