As long as you take few precautions, it is okay to go to a nail salon for manicure and pedicure when pregnant.

Ensure your salon is well ventilated, so you are not exposed to fume of solvent releasing during the drying process. You can also wear a mask to be extra careful while getting your nails done.

Also, ask your salon for non-toxic nail polish if they carry any or take your nail polish and let them do your nails. I would bring my own to be on the safer side or call them in advance and ask them if they carry a brand that you prefer.

How To Shop For Nontoxic Nail Polish

When shopping for nontoxic nail polish, it’s essential to read the ingredient label and online product description. Through our beauty editor’s research, she found that most nontoxic nail polishes are typically either 3-free, 5-free, 7-free, or 10-free, indicating each item is without at least three controversial ingredients. You also have nail polishes that are 14-free and 16-free, but those are less common.

To help simplify your search for nontoxic nail polish, we tapped Michelle Saunders, an A-list manicurist known for working with celebrities including Emily Blunt, Mandy Moore, and Taraji P. Henson. She breaks down the most common classifications of nontoxic nail polish and what ingredients are omitted, regardless of the brand.

3-Free Nail Polish

For those who prefer fewer chemicals in their manicures, Saunders says you should choose one that is 3-Free, meaning it omits formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate the three primary offenders in regular nail polish.

5-Free Nail Polish

Some nontoxic nail polishes are 5-free, indicating they do not contain formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate, plus formaldehyde resin and camphor.

7-Free Nail Polish

7-free polishes exclude seven questionable ingredients, including all five found in 5-Free, plus ethyl tosylamide and xylene. “You’ll see 3-free, 5-free, 7-free, and so on, but 3-free is just as safe as 7-free,” says Saunders.

How Safe Are The Chemicals Used In Nail Polish

Well, it depends on your use . Through a recent study, Duke and EWG noted that while human nails are generally not absorbent, certain nail solvents or treatments used before nail polish application may wear down nail material and make it more permeable, allowing the body to absorb these toxic chemicals.

In fact, the chemical used to replace DBT, TPP was found in that same Duke/EWG study was found to increase sharply in the consumers body after using nail polish. This is especially disturbing as TPP containing nail polish is often used by children.

Shockingly, as of July, 2015, EWG, who runs a database of chemicals, products, and ingredients found that TPP/TPHP was listed in about half of the 3K nail polishes and treatments in their database. However, EWG expects that there are more companies that simply dont disclose that it is in their product.

List Of Affordable Drugstore Vegan Nail Polish Brands

This post may contain affiliate links that at no additional cost to you, I may earn a small commission.

Looking for vegan nail polish at your local drugstore? Unfortunately, most of the nail polish sold at the drugstore are sadly not cruelty-free and from brands that continue to test on animals in 2019.

Some popular drugstore nail polish brands that are not cruelty-free include OPI, Sally Hansen, Revlon, and LOreal. Some other nail polishes may also contain animal ingredients like guanine, shellac, and keratin.

This has made shopping for cruelty-free and vegan nail polishes at the drugstore very difficult, but I have good news, there are a few vegan nail polish options that you can find and get at Target, Wal-mart, Ulta, London Drugs, Superdrug, CVS, and more! All of which are under $10!

Is It Safe To Use Nail Polish When Pregnant

Non-Toxic, Vegan Nail Polish Favourites

The general answer is yes, nail polish is safe to use while pregnant. There are some stipulations to that answer though.

Some experts believe exposure to nail polish could be harmful to a fetus, but the evidence is not clear. Most dermatologists say using non-toxic nail polish is the best choice if you want to paint your nails while pregnant.

This may sound scary, but it really is not. Dermatologists say there are no studies that have shown nail polish to be harmful in pregnant patients or to a developing baby.

Chemicals in the nail polish can be absorbed by the nail bed, but researchers say there is no data to show how much of these chemicals make it into the body.

More research is needed, but most scientists agree that nail polish is safe to use while pregnant. They say the likelihood of these chemicals making it into a pregnant persons bloodstream from painting their fingernails is very slim.

This answer changes a bit if you work in a nail salon. Pregnant women who are constantly exposed to these chemicals, such as a nail technician, may have a higher risk of complications.

Wearing protective gear, like masks and gloves, is recommended if youre facing long-term exposure. Having good ventilation and getting fresh air regularly may reduce these risks.
