Fungal Nail Infection Laser Treatment

Fungal Nail Infection, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

If youve noticed white or yellow spotting or streaking on your toenail and are worried youve picked up a fungal nail infection youre not alone!

Fungal toenail infections, medically known as onychomycosis, affect approximately 10% of the population in Australia. Unfortunately, this rate only increases as we get older, with up to 50% of people over the age of 60 having one or more nails infected.

Thankfully, My FootDr has taken advantage of the technological advancements in recent years, meaning that we can treat these fungal nail infections more effectively than ever before using anti-fungal laser treatment. This means no more daily creams, lacquers or tablets.

When To See A Doctor

If home remedies arent working or your toe infection is getting worse, its definitely time for you to see a doctor.

Existing medical conditions can put you at even greater risk. Its important to consult a physician right away if you have a weakened immune system or diabetes.

We take our toes for granted until they start hurting.

You can keep your toes healthy and problem-free by:

  • checking them often
  • keeping your feet clean and free of moisture
  • trimming your nails carefully

Preventing Fungal Nail Infection

Studies suggest that in about 1 in 4 cases where the fungal nail infection has been cleared from the nail, the infection returns within three years. One way to help prevent a further bout of nail infection is to treat athlete’s foot as early as possible to stop the infection spreading to the nail. Athlete’s foot is common and may recur from time to time. It is easy to treat with an antifungal cream which you can buy from pharmacies, or obtain on prescription. The first sign of athlete’s foot is itchy and scaling skin between the toes. See the separate leaflet called Athlete’s Foot for more details. Also:

  • Try to avoid injury to nails, which may increase the risk of developing a nail infection.
  • Wear footwear such as flip-flops in public places, such as communal bathing/shower places, locker rooms, etc.
  • Avoid towel sharing.
  • Consider replacing old footwear, as this could be contaminated with fungal spores.

The human body, given that the immune system works properly, can fight-off mild fungal infections on its own.

The only thing you need to do is wash the infected area properly.

It would also be in your best interest to make sure that the affected nail is kept away from aggravating factors such as

Does Nail Fungus Cause Nail Disorders

Nail disorders are normally caused by physical injury to the nail, underlying health condition and a fungus infection. The nail fungal infection can be eradicated by following a right treatment that enhances the development of a new and non-infected nail.

Healthy nails are the mirror of our good health. Nails are grown tough and acts as a barrier between our skin and physical injury, hot water and chemicals. Yet, nails are prone to injury and can get infected. There are several types of nail disorders and some of them are mentioned here.

Does Laser Treatment For Fungal Nail Infections Hurt

We offer two types of laser to treat fungal nail infections: cold laser and hot laser. Neither of these treatments are painful. Cold laser is completely painless, as it uses two cool wavelengths of light simultaneously to clear the fungal infection. We have never had any patient complain of any pain with this treatment.

Hot laser uses heat to act on the fungus, however, this is not typically painful. You may feel a warm sensation over your nail as the laser is applied. This is controlled by your experienced podiatrist, so if youre worried then know they can pause the treatment instantly if you feel any discomfort. Your safety is our priority.

What is nail fungus?

Itâs a good idea to wash your hands and feet often. Use soap, and make sure you get between your fingers and toes.

Keep your fingernails and toenails short and trimmed straight across.

Wear socks that wick away moisture. If your feet sweat a lot, change your socks once or twice a day, or take off your shoes and let your feet cool when you have the chance.

Use antifungal powder or spray on your feet as well as in your shoes. Throw away old pairs of closed-toe shoes since fungi might be living in them.

If you get manicures at nail salons, visit only the ones that disinfect tools after each client. You can also bring your own file and clippers from home. Ask that your cuticles not be cut, since this can cause tiny breaks in the skin that let germs in.

Donât share towels if someone else in your family has nail fungus. This will pass around the infection.

See your doctor if you think you have nail fungus. You may need a prescription to treat it, whether that means taking a medicine by mouth or using a special cream. In severe cases, your nail may need to be removed so a healthy new one can grow in its place. Doctors can also use lasers to treat nail fungus.

Early Treatment Is Key To Preventing Severe Onychomycosis

Fungal infection in nails : Causes, Tips and Treatment ...

Nail fungal infections are best treated in its earliest stages. Once you spot any of the mentioned early signs and symptoms, seek the advice of your health professional. Usually, for early onychomycosis, treatment may simply be in the form of topical anti-fungal solutions. EmoniNail is a perfect example of a topical treatment that contains safe and effective ingredients, such as undecylenic acid and tea tree oil, that will likely kill fungi and improve the nails overall health.

Treating onychomycosis in recent times has advanced and the availability of surgical treatments, laser therapies, and other oral anti-fungal medications are now out in the market. Although not necessary in early onychomycosis, they also prove to be successful in eliminating fungal nail infections. These types of treatments are best recommended under the supervision of your doctor. Visit your physicians to know what treatment works best for you.

How Do You Get A Fungal Nail Infection

Most fungal nail infections occur as a result of the fungi that cause athlete’s foot infecting the nails.

These fungi often live harmlessly on your skin, but they can sometimes multiply and lead to infections. The fungi prefer warm, dark and moist places like the feet.

You’re more likely to get a fungal nail infection if you:

  • don’t keep your feet clean and dry
  • wear shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty
  • walk around barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers, locker rooms and gyms
  • have damaged your nails
  • have a weakened immune system
  • have certain other health conditions, such as diabetes, psoriasis or peripheral arterial disease

Fungal nail infections can be spread to other people, so you should take steps to avoid this if you have an infection.

What About The Cost Of Oral Medications For Fungal Nails

Schollmed Once Weekly* Fungal Nail Treatment

A further consideration is cost. Because newer oral antifungal agents are very expensive, some insurance companies balk at paying for what they consider a “cosmetic issue,” unless nail fungus causes pain or other functional symptoms. Terbinafine and fluconazole are now available as generic drugs and are quite inexpensive.

Can I Prevent Nail Infections

To prevent a nail infection, you should:

  • Avoid biting or chewing on your nails or hangnails. Dont pick at your cuticles.
  • Be careful not to cut your nails too short. When trimming cuticles, avoid cutting too close to the nail fold.
  • Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands and keeping your nails clean. Use gentle soaps that are not irritating to your skin.
  • Use lotion on your nail fold and cuticles if your skin is dry. Excessive dryness can cause the skin to crack.
  • Wear waterproof gloves if you work with chemicals or your hands will be wet for a long period.

The nail plate and nail bed are joined by layers of hard, translucent, keratinised cells. The nail bed and nail matrix are vascular components of the nail, with nail cells located within the nail matrix where the nail plate is formed. The thickness of the nail plate determines the length of the matrix

  • Apply cosmetic nail varnishes or artificial nails

How Can It Be Treated

Treating a fungal nail can be a lengthy process it can take several months to clear. This is largely due to the time it takes for your toenail to grow.

You’ll only see a clear improvement when the damaged nail has grown out. It can take six months to a year after the treatment has finished before the nail looks normal again.

Speak to your pharmacist for advice on treating fungal nail infections. See your GP if over the counter treatment hasnt worked or if the infection is severe or has spread to other nails. Make sure you see your GP or a foot specialist if you have diabetes and develop a fungal nail infection, as people with diabetes are at an increased risk of foot problems.

Why Are There Only Limited Types Of Medications For Fungal Infections

Is this toenail fungus? Find out here. â Eltham Foot Clinic

Fungi and humans share the same ancestry which is the domain Eukarya. The domain Eukarya are composed of organisms whose cells have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.

Medical practitioners have difficulty in making new anti-fungal drugs because these drugs usually work by targeting fungal cells and killing them.

Unfortunately, humans and fungi share the same ancestral domain and the difference in cellular compositions does not have much variation. This similarity causes anti-fungal drugs to target both fungal and human cells which may cause harm to our body.

Only the most selective fungus-specific drugs are released in the market and thus the choices become limited.
