What is the amount you should buy when preparing for your new hardwood floor installation? It depends on the total area where youre going to do your project. Again, the amount of spacing between each nail matters as well. You dont want to space them too far or too close to each other.
The ideal spacing to me is nailing at 3 and 8 positions from each side. This will be perfect for 3-5 inch wide hardwood planks. If its wider than that, the spacing should be 6 inches. That amounts to 1.5-2 nails per foot.
Now, measure your targeted area and calculate the total length in the same direction as your planks. Then, measure the number of nails you need for this length. Add 10% of it as you will need to include extra nails for shortboards. These need extra nails on each end.
Next, calculate the required rows to complete the flooring. You can do that by simply measuring the length perpendicular to the plank direction and then dividing it by the width of one plank.
The multiplication of the number of rows and nails required for each row is the number of nails you need to purchase.

Good point. It would have been useful to layout the underlayment first so we wouldnât have to go through these steps again. The control line serves another purpose after beginning the installation, which weâll get into later. When rolling out your underlayment opinions vary on whether or not it should be overlapped or not.
Some claim if it is overlapped one can actually see a telegraphing effect after the floor is installed. In other words, small rises occur every 45 inches where the two layers overlap. Personally I never paid attention to it, and the National Wood Flooring Association calls for overlapping anyway.
What To Complete Before Flooring Installation
The building must be completely closed in with all outside doors and windows in place. All wet work should be thoroughly dry. The wall coverings and painting should be completed before you nail down hardwood flooring.
In order to avoid damage caused by moisture, make sure basements and under-floor crawl space are dry and well ventilated. Plastering and concrete work must be completely dry with minimum of 90 days curing time. Freshly poured concrete slabs emit many gallons of moisture as water vapor, therefore no concrete should be poured after the flooring is installed.
Exterior grading should be complete with surface drainage offering a minimum drop of 3 in 10 to direct flow of water away from the structure. All gutters and downspouts should be in place.
Solid hardwood flooring only can be installed on or above ground level with a plywood subfloor. Engineered flooring can be installed above grade, at grade and below grade level. Do not install hardwood flooring in bathrooms. Always check with the manufacturers instructions to determine if your hardwood floor can be installed over an in-floor radiant heat system.
