Ive been vegan for 9 years and exploring nontoxic products something like 3 years before that. Even though Ive been living consciously for almost half my life, there are still areas that I basically ignored when it came to toxins until the past few years or so: two of those being makeup and nail polish.

You can make your own natural nail polish, or organic nail polish and remover. This will be a great alternative when you want to have something that is safe, or if you are a vegan. You will need to collect some natural ingredients in order to make your own DIY homemade nail polish.
Ingredients: Alkanet root, beeswax, vitamin E oil, olive oil
Procedure for Making Safe Nail Polish:
- Heat alkanet and olive oil in a double boiler.
- After they get warm, set them for 5 minutes.
- Use a strainer to separate the root from the mixture and pour the oil into the double boiler again. Add your beeswax and allow it time to melt.
- Add vitamin E oil to the mix.
- Remove from the boiler and you are ready to go.
- Apply your homemade nail polish on your nails. It is safe and all natural.

Chimento states that chemicals in polishes can be absorbed through both the cuticles and nails themselves, but are just as easily inhaled through their fumes .;
The main issue is that, while studies show the body does absorb chemicals in nail polishes, research is lacking around whether levels are significant enough to affect us long-term. “The amount you absorb, and whether or not it’s enough to negatively impact health, is not well established,” Hoffman shares. “Many chemicals used in nail polish are metabolized and quickly clear from the body. For example, we assessed exposure to TPHP during nail painting and found that markers of exposure went up after painting and decreased within a day or two.”
Hoffman says that, for those who only use polishes on occasion, their exposure levels are probably low. “But for people who paint their nails regularly, or work in nail salons, polishes may be a more important source of exposure”; especially when combined with amounts in other everyday products .
While the jury remains out on the real impact of these chemicals, “it is enough of a concern to fuel a move to clean or ‘safer’ nail polish options,” states Chimento. Essentially, “there isn’t a way for this type of product to exist if it is not formulated with chemicals. But there are ways to make formulas safer, and that is what some brands are striving to do.”

What Makes Nail Polish Non
Following a 2015 study that found chemicals in lacquers can absorb through our nails and into our bodies, brands have begun to weed out ingredients that could negatively affect our health. The most common term you’ll see is three-free, meaning a polish is made without formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate. These are the “big three” ingredients considered to be the most potentially disruptive.
