Take Breaks From Wearing Acrylics
Our experts suggest you take breaks from acrylics if you experience any discoloration. “First have the acrylics removed and don’t apply nail polish for at least two to three weeks,” says Correa. She recommends that during this period, you refrain from getting your nails wet. “Keep the affected nails covered when taking a shower or getting them wet in general. I suggest using Fungi Fix Hypoallergenic Sleeves to keep moisture out while the nail grows out.”
Green recommends that after “three months of continuous wear of acrylic nails, take a two- to three-month break from acrylics and give your natural nails a chance to strengthen.”
What Else Can Fingernails Tell A Dermatologist About Your Health
Nails say a lot about your health. Your dermatologist can look for changes in the nail texture, brittleness, lunula , overall shape and color of your nails.
Seeing changes in the shape and color of nails can mean chronic lung or heart diseases. Sometimes whitening might indicate kidney or heart disease. Brittleness alerts us to consider if the thyroid is working properly or if the person may have anemia. If theres clubbing of the tip of the nail and texture changes, there could be an underlying lung problem. If I see concerning nail symptoms, I will look into it further. Also, if you notice a new brown or black stripe, theres a risk of melanoma under the nailor it may just be a freckle or due to a nail infection or inflammation. Its important to understand that most melanomas under the nail are not caused by sun damage, but by random mutationsif you have one, you just got unlucky.
New stripes going down the nail need to be checked out by a dermatologist. A red stripe or lifting of nail from the nail bed could indicate another type of skin cancer.

A problem that I have come across far too often recently in the industry is mould on clients nails more commonly known with techs as greenies. But is this really mould?

Pseudomonas are a common, run-of-the-mill bacteria that can turn the nail green were mould is actually a fungus. Typically, the nail does not provide a sustainable environment for these bacteria to grow, however, when conditions are perfect , these bacteria make a home either on top of the natural nail and under an enhancement. Severe and un-treated cases will appear as dark green or even black spots on the nail. More than often, this is caused by moisture getting trapped between an enhancement and the natural nail poor application or poor tech hygiene.
What should a tech do?
Prevention is always better than treatment and the first step in prevention is a good hygiene practice, proper application and good client care and education. Protect yourself and your client by holding to industry standards.
The natural nail underneath the enhancement will likely be stained ranging from a dull green to an unsightly black as well as possibly being soft from the moisture. Once treated by their GP, the stained nail will eventually grow out, and a soft nail will harden back up.
