Tip: How To Hang Something Heavy With Minimal Wall Damage

May 17, 2014

Without fail, whenever I want to hang something heavy on my drywall there is not a stud in that spot to support it. I like to change things up on my walls often, and I detest those plastic wall anchors. Typically when you want to hang a heavy item on the wall where there is no stud, you have to get out your drill, drill a hole, hammer in a wall anchor, and then screw in a large screw. Removing wall anchors is a pain and patching the wall after removal never looks perfect. I knew there had to be a better way to hang heavy items with minimal wall damage! Some of you already know this brilliant little invention , but others might still be in the dark. If youre still in the dark like I was, Im about to change your life!

To hang something perfectly the first time, I like to make a template of the item out of butcher paper and tape it to the wall exactly where Id like it to be. Next, I measure and mark where the holes need to be.

I used these to hang both bathroom mirrors which each weigh around 10 pounds.

I also used them to hang the mirror in my master bedroom. I didnt want to damage my newly installed plank wall with ugly anchors! To hang on the plank wall, I did need to use a tiny drill bit to puncture the wood and then proceeded to use the hook as outlined above. I am thrilled that when I want to switch out this mirror I wont have large holes to patch on my wood wall.

What Drywall Anchor Should You Use

When choosing a drywall anchor to use, first figure out the weight of the object you would like to hang. Next, choose a drywall anchor with a weight rating that is higher than the weight of the object that will be hanged. Choosing a higher weight rating will ensure that the anchor will not fail in case you accidentally added weight to the hanging object or if you accidentally grabbed onto it and pull it down.

So for example, if you are planning to hang an 80 lbs. mirror, you can use a snaptoggle anchor with a weight rating of 90 lbs. or more.

You can also use more than one drywall anchor to carry heavier weights. So using two self-drilling drywall anchors with a weight rating of 30 lbs. each can carry a maximum weight of 60 lbs. . Just be sure that the weight of the object is equally distributed to the two drywall anchors.

Some Tips For Covering Tiny Holes In The Wall

Just because you are renting, it doesnt mean that you cannot talk to your landlord about your needs. Sometimes, holes become completely unavoidable in creating or personalising the space according to your needs. In such cases, you can communicate with the proprietor and assure them that you will either pay for the damage or repair it yourself. If they give you the go-ahead, you can quickly fill small holes in the wall with the tips shared below:

  • Make a paste of white cement, just as much as you need, and use it to fill the whole.
  • You can also fill tiny holes in the wall by using a mixture of plaster of Paris.
  • Toothpaste is also a great way of covering nail holes in the wall.

Just remember these tips are only for white or similar coloured walls that wouldnt look odd with small and white coloured patches. Again make sure that the landlord is well-informed about the situation and doesnt have any problems with it.

Consider Using Guides Or Rails

How to hang heavy items without nails or glue with VELCRO® Brand.

Now, this is an excellent option if youre looking to create an effect that stands out. The reason is that youd mostly find pictures being hung on guides and rails in museums and galleries. You can create a unique aesthetic effect without defacing the walls if you can pull this off right.

All you need to do here is to set up guide rails to the wall or ceiling. You then fix the picture on the wire that sticks out from the guide rail. Its as easy as that. You might need to make some small holes for this. However, nowhere will the gaps be as significant as those made by nails.

Using guide rails allows you to change the pictures as often as possible without worrying about adhesives stuck to the wall and whatnot. Plus, theres something about having a gallery-related way of hanging your pictures.

As noted earlier, every command strip comes with its own unique size and weight restriction. This information is often listed on the package. The larger strips can handle art or pictures that weigh an excess of 16 pounds. Smaller command strips can only hold up to four pounds.

For hanging anything, its recommended that you buy a size thats a little bigger than the actual weight of your frame or photo. This is worth trying if you doubt whether the strip you purchased can actually handle the weight indicated on the package.

For best results, steer clear from using two command hooks to hang your frame. Once the adhesives of the two strips are pushed together, they can hold a combined weight of 15 pounds. The best thing to do is to use a single strip with a better weight capacity. A good example is the Command Jumbo Utility Hook. This strip can hold a whopping seven-and-a-half pounds and stay firmly plastered on the wall for the longest time.

Use The Appropriate Drywall Anchor With The Right Weight Rating And A Good Pulling Resistance

Before buying a drywall anchor, make sure to get the weight of the object you would like to hang. Then get a drywall anchor that has a bigger weight rating than the object that you will be hanging.

Also consider if there is a horizontal pulling action that might be applied to the anchor as well. If there is, choose a drywall anchor that has enough grip and has a high pulling resistance. Toggle bolts, and snaptoggle anchors are good examples of drywall anchors with good pulling resistance.

Also, when installing drywall anchors, always read the instructions on its proper usage in the packaging. Some anchors need an appropriate size of pilot hole on the drywall to be able to install it correctly.

Assuming You Have Drywall Or Plaster As Most People Do Use A Stud Finder To Well Find A Stud

Turns out, a stud is more than just an embellishment that makes your clothes look edgy or a hot guy. It’s also a piece of metal or wood supporting your walls that you can use to hang things even if the wall material itself is too flimsy.

This handy gadget uses a magnet to help you detect them. It also has a built-in level you can use for hanging once you’ve found the stud.

Promising review: “This is a GAME CHANGER! Every once in a while, a new device renders all the old ones utterly obsolete. So it is with these stud finders. Oh, yes, Ive used the old battery powered devices I own several. You know, the ones with little LEDs that supposedly light-up when youre over a studexcept that they keep lighting up in different places so that you ultimately give up and just drive in a nail into the wall and hope youll be over a stud. No more! Gently rub these little gadgets over your wall, and when theres a nail underneath the sheetrock, its powerful magnets will be drawn to it, and IT WILL STICK TO THE WALL! There is NO guessing with this little fellow.” Moi Aussie

Also, bear in mind that if the magnet is sticking to a larger stretch of wall, not just one area where a nail would be, you may have found a pipe, so don’t drill there!

    Allow The Adhesive To Dry

Dont hang your picture on the hook just yet. Give the adhesive approximately 30 to 60 minutes to do its job and keep the hook tightly stuck on the wall. Later, test the strength of the hook by hanging your heavy picture.

If it falls off, repeat the whole process with a fresh set of command hooks and follow each step more carefully.
